Anyone else 'let themselves go'?

After 40 years in dark suits and high heels, I was really happy to go a bit boho, but with a weight gain I cannot really get the enthusiasm for new clothes, especially as now hubby has retired he likes to come shopping with me, so everything is 20 year old t-shirts and jeans/shorts except for a Sunday church skirt and blouse.
At this time of year, I put wet thing out to blow dry by way of ironing, but for winter Casdon, I will give you my address! My 82 year old ironer has retired.
I do feel a little scruffy as my hair simply will no longer behave, but my lovely friend has alopecia and has simply taken the lot off and owns it, with the winter wear of some really colourful woolly hats.

I never wear make-up, I only iron if really necessary- the creases will fall out while wearing the clothes, I wear my most comfortable clothes, meaning tatty, at home, but put on a dress, nice but comfy shoes, and my hat when going out. I don't over dress, but see so many women either mutton dressed as lamb or slobbing around in tights with everything hanging out, that I do like to be presentable.
Be comfortable as you are, just remember not to go out in your pj's.

I love to wear summer dresses and sandals. I do wear a little make-up when I go out. Each to their own and what makes you happy.

Depending what jeans and T you choose to wear, loose and comfortable though they be, it doesn't stop you being a style icon - make up or not.

My personal opinion is that as you get older makeup should become unobtrusive. I still wear mascara and a dash of blusher, but many older people look better with none at all.

I so agree with this. Jeans, shorts, skirts, dresses makes no difference at all.

And it's not about being slim either - saw quite a large lady in town yesterday in a flowy midi dress who looked fabulous. Hair was done, some make up, a lovely pendant and a walking stick. Chatting away ten to the dozen with the people at the next table, looking quite vibrant.

Yes, yes, yes.. They really have saved us from either the uncomfortable shoes or dare I say the Granny shoes!

I used to refer to my work clothes as my 'school uniform'.

Mind you things are very diffeent now. I am currently sofa surfing at DD's and it is quite enlightening to see how casually she dresses on 'in the office' days. She works in banking at quite a senior level and dresses very casually. I worked in the engineering and other industries, where I was often the only or one of very few women on the managerial side of the managerial/clerical divide and I conscious dressed smartly and with colour in my clothes as part of my strategy to make my self seen and heard and listened to.

I totally agree. Trainers are the best. Also the lovely soft wide trousers that are in fashion. Who would have thought it in the 80s.

I have to iron - virtually all my summer things are pure cotton, linen or a mix, and look awful if not ironed.
Hardly any of my winter things ever need ironing. One reason I never mind winter….

I do wear a very little makeup when going outside - just eyes (otherwise they disappear) and a little lipstick. Takes less than 2 minutes.

I can’t see what’s changed for this about turn. Now grey, no make up and clothes like Worzel Gummidge.😬

Well as I said, Mother Nature (and parental neglect) has knocked the stuffing out of me looks wise. For some bizarre reason I keep trying. A lady I know got to 50 and said 'Thank goodness for that. Now I can stop trying.'

Could be a sign of the very slow onset of dementia.

Or maybe, like me, she got tired of meeting society's expectations and decided to simply please herself.

I could ask, but she says herself that she’s let herself go and doesn’t seem worried about it so I assume it’s as you say Scribbles.
She’s only early 60’s like me Monica but I guess it’s possible.
She’s fusses about trivial things now but nothing I could say was early dementia tho you never know.

I always try to look presentable, nice even! I do my make-up every day, very naturally & I make sure that I look reasonaby good in my trusty uniform of a pair of nice trousers & a flattering blouse. This stops me faffing about each moaning.
