Is intolerance getting worse on GN?

I am horrified to have been told, in the last couple of days, that Rod Stewart's music should not be listened to because he supports reform and to stop watching Eastenders and read a library book.

Well, I watched Rod Stewart and am still an SDP supporter - if they only still existed!

And, the library in our village is a very successfully run community library which i helped transition from Council control -between watching episodes of Eastenders.

For goodness sake - get a grip some of you!

A poster who lives in Israel was bullied off a thread, it was cruel,
she was polite tried to explain and share her experiences

love0c Mon 30-Jun-25 09:13:14

It does seem to be if you say anything that is not on the 'left'. The 'left' do seem to like to tell you what to think and how to think. Fortunately from an early age, I always knew to think for myself.

Iam64 Mon 30-Jun-25 09:35:03

It really isn’t only the left, whoever they might be, right leaning posters and politicians also think they’re right
We need to be able to respect people we disagree wuth

Cossy

woodenspoon I’m probably what you’d consider a leftie and woke, I have never reported another poster thanks

Same!

ViceVersa Mon 30-Jun-25 09:44:49

I do think there are some posters (thankfully only a very few) who seem to deliberately twist what someone else has said just to provoke an argument.
I honestly don't think I've seen much personal abuse on here though - although it may well have happened on threads I've no interest in. There again, maybe some people are more easily offended than others.

Kandinsky Mon 30-Jun-25 09:49:05

Oh I don’t know, most left wingers on social media come from a position of superiority - anyone else is a racist idiot. And if you dare admit you voted Brexit or reform, they demand you write a thesis explaining why.

Parsley3 Mon 30-Jun-25 09:49:42

The most notable difference that I find is on the political threads where there is currently no tolerance of any poster who attempts to give any sort of balanced or even neutral view on a subject. I am weary of being pushed into spelling out whether I am in favour of one extreme or another. GN has been split into rights and lefts, pro Israel or pro Hamas etc etc and debates are stifled because of it. N &P threads used to run until they were full and then carried on but that rarely happens now.

Claremont

Not sure. The other day I was reported for saying that laughing about a very serious and tragic was sickening. It was reported for being a personal attack. I never said the person was sick, but that the use of laughing emoticon was 'sickening' in the circumstances.

I recall that Claremont.

And, if I remember correctly, the poster who reported isn’t a ‘leftie’ (AFAIK).

Perhaps your system for detecting ‘lefties’ isn’t that efficient woodenspoon🤷‍♀️

GrannyGravy13 Mon 30-Jun-25 09:51:25

My first and biggest mistake on joining GN (after the referendum) was to admit to voting leave and being a Conservative.

I can still remember how I felt in the first couple of weeks, the vitriolic comments directed towards me.

Of it wasn’t for Anniebach I would have deregistered and headed for the hills.

HelterSkelter1 Mon 30-Jun-25 09:54:21

In the 5 years I have been reading and posting on GN I have seen a change. I scroll past the posts now which I can see are deliberately goady and disingenuous both by the title, tone and often now by the OP name. I think. "Oh here we go again"

I pick and choose. I think GN now reflects the change for the worse in the UK. Less compassion and acceptance of others' views. So much anger. Probably more now to be angry about.

Anniebach Mon 30-Jun-25 09:57:42

GrannyGravy what you received here at that time was brutal,
it really caused me to shed a few tears, you hadn’t goaded or
criticised posters, I am thankful you stayed on GransNet, I say it as a Labour Party member

Kate1949 Mon 30-Jun-25 09:58:45

I agree kitty. My sister's have loved Rod since the 70s. They couldn't care less about his political views. It's the same with Tim Martin. I love Wetherspoons and wouldn't dream of not going because of Tim's views.

The only posts I report are the scam ones or people advertising their wares. My sense is that the banned ones are mostly perceived as right wing rather than left wing because,to me, the ‘far left’ is far more prevalent on here than the ‘far right’. Interesting to see if this post is banned, I suppose.
I have never ,ever , come across anyone really far right on here I must say but plenty the other way. And before I am attacked as far right I would say 90% of the time I am a Labor voter though I certainly wouldn’t vote for Starmer, he needs to go.

Nanna why would you think your post might be reported?

It’s not racist, homophobic or personally insulting to an individual poster🤷‍♀️

If it’s your ‘sense’ that most GN posters on here are ‘far left’ that’s your sense. Up to you.

We all have a variety of facets to our characters some, perhaps, nicer than others! Our opinions are largely formed by our experiences and knowledge, which will undoubtedly vary from other people's. I can agree wholeheartedly with someone over one thing but disagree totally about something else.

There's nothing wrong with robust discussion but we should accept that other people's experience will lead them to have different opinions. Argue points of view by all means but don't abuse someone just because they see things differently.

TerriBull Mon 30-Jun-25 10:05:46

Good for you AnnieB, I don't think anyone should be pilloried if they stated how they vote, it's personal to them and they are exercising their democratic right. Or would those critics prefer a one party state sad

TerriBull Mon 30-Jun-25 10:08:22

Speaking as someone who has voted for the two major parties (or perhaps I should say former major party) at various junctures.

Usedtobeblonde Mon 30-Jun-25 10:16:56

A few days ago I started a thread about Royal Ascot.
To say my views were very much in the minority is an understatement.
I didn’t mind at all, very old thick skin.
However after a few days a new poster made the most scathing post , it was insulting and rude.
It was reported, not by me, and was taken down.
I didn’t mind at wonder why but now see it was a personal , sarcastic attack.
He/she made another one but I don’t think it was taken down.
I can’t comment on any posts on the political threads ,I long ago learned not to go there.
Their are some people and some situations in threads I don’t agree with but long ago accepted the mantra, if you can’t say anything nice don’t say anything at all.

Well, nanna8 has been told that she really has no right to comment on British politics because she lives in Australia.

Yet here many of us are, commenting in USA politics, French politics and even Australian politics!

LizzieDrip Mon 30-Jun-25 10:32:01

Yes, those (few) comments have been made openly by posters. I may have been one and I stand by that view in relation to some of nanna’s views regarding UK politics. That’s just disagreement🤷‍♀️

However, I’m not aware of nanna being reported for her view - unless I’ve missed something.

Claremont

No idea why and when FGT was reported and why the ban came ito force. I can tell you that the report button is oft enthusiastically used by those with a rightie dogma, as well as the accusation of antisemitism as a reaction to any criticism of Netanyahu and what is happening n Gaza.

So, intolerance of a TV programme, or a musician supporting Reform, is just unfortunate and spoil things. An opinion properly expressed is fair enough however.

But when it come to an illegal war, or sheer racism, then people have the right to express their concern and even more.

I watch Denders as we call it in our family and read many books of many kinds. It's just silly to judge.

You were reported by me for a personal attack so don’t say it was criticism of BN.
We can all express our differing views but insults are a no no.

If this continues, because a poster was annoyed at a deletion, then I will have to continue to report as harassment.
And yes I am a leftie thank you very much, in that I’m a Labour voter rather than a Corbyn fan.

I found FriedGreen as she allowed me to call her, a really pleasant poster with interesting comments.
