Wimbledon overload

I put my hands up to having no interest in tennis but have just seen in the Radio Times that almost every day this week Wimbledon is on BBC 1 from 2pm until 6pm and then after a break for the news, it is on from 7pm until 10pm. I think on one day there's a break for the Euros. When BBC 1 don't have it on, BBC 2 has it. Might I be forgiven for seeing this as a slight overload so early in the tournament? Putting my hard hat on now!

Years ago it might have been a problem with only 3 channels to watch with one of them devoted to a sport you’re not interested in but these days we’re spoilt for choice.

It’s a pain in the neck, to be honest. Yes, I know there are fans, but some of us couldn’t care less about it, so at least one channel should be given over to the usual schedule. Definitely overload, but the BBC are like this with most sport, and if you’re not interested then their attitude seems to be “tough”, never mind the fact that we pay a licence fee too. There should be options.

I’m not interested in tennis really but a lot of people are and it is a big sporting event in the UK with great interest from all over the world.
I am proud of this fact, so therefore I’m ok with the amount of coverage on BBC and will just find other channels to watch, which might turn up something I wouldn’t normally watch.

TBH I don’t usually watch tv during the day and even in the evening it’s rarely “live” tv , but a streamed box set or film, so I’m not affected either way.
But I do admit to watching last Saturday’s Lions rugby match against Western Australia ( on Sky Sports)

Rosiebee I am totally with you, not that bothered about day time but it must be irritating for some, but evenings on BBC are dominated by sport! Thank goodness for Netflix and IPlayer!

I was amazed at how much Wimbledon is scheduled... and I love watching it!
Over and above BBC 1 and 2 player gas loads of matches ... I am loving it!!!

Luckygirl3 Mon 30-Jun-25 13:09:54

Iplayer has ...

It doesn't bother me at all, to be honest. I'm not a tennis fan, but there's so many other channels now that there's plenty of choice for everyone. When I was a child, my mother used to be glued to Wimbledon.

I enjoy Wimbledon, in fact I’ve been there many times and I’m half watching it now while answering emails. Of course, it’s only two weeks a year. I hate football all through the year but wouldn’t complain about that because, as others have said, there’s so many other channels to watch. In the usual course of life, I never put the TV on during the day until 6 for the news. Yesterday I broke that rule and watched Glastonbury for a while. These next two weeks I’ll be dipping in and out of Wimbledon. As it’s scorching here today I’m more than happy to be able to watch it with my fan on full.

Not a tennis fan either, watched the U21 football the other evening though.
Plenty of choice on the numerous other channels, two weeks will whiz past.

This is not new though - BBC has always shown loads of Wimbledon, all through the tournament. I don't watch but I'm happy for those who do.

Oh God. Wimblebore!

jusnoneed Mon 30-Jun-25 13:30:17

I don't often watch tv until around 7 in the evening so three weeks out of 52 for Queens and Wimbledon means having something I'd want to view in the afternoon and is fine by me.
There are so many other channels/apps now that I rarely watch the beeb anyway.

That’s what I say too!😃
I know a couple who shut themselves away during Wimbledon fortnight and turn off phones in order to watch non stop😬

I might have done that in the days of Borg, McEnroe etc but apart from Alcaraz there’s nobody that exciting now. I hope the finals are good.

It's only two weeks, unlike football which seems endless....

Wimbledon and some Olympics is probably the only sport I watch, Wimbledon is only on for 2 weeks so I don't think it impinges too much on regular viewing. Football is the one that gets me, it used to be on just over the Winter season for the men. Now it's the Euros, The World Cup and various other championships plus the Women's games that continually knock the regular viewing off the tv. But I do usually manage to find something on the myriad channels that are on nowadays. U and Drama is usually what I go for as I worked abroad for so many years so there is often a drama that I haven't seen before.

It is only two weeks and it is part of the summer scene in Britain including chelsea and ascot. There are plenty of other channels and more choice than ever
Leave Wimbledon to those who love it. It's better than football any day.

Hi
I’m a tennis fan but the BBC is a disgrace! Absolutely no choice if you don’t want to watch tennis!
The commentary is disgraceful!
Just a load of waffling! Yes I know I can turn the sound off but why should I have to!
Total tennis overload and even in the evenings it’s only junk tv!
Thank goodness for Netflix and U👍

It's about time that the BBC had a dedicated channel for sport. I've a good mind to ask for a refund!

Presumably if you can get Netflix you can also get BBC iPlayer. A complete treasure trove of fantastic programmes of all shapes and sizes.

It’s about time that the BBC had a dedicated sports channel with its own red button so that those of us with no interest in sport can enjoy normal programming.

I love itbut I feel for people that don't. It's like Premier League Football, takes over everything! Ive always said BBC should get rid of BBC 3 or 4 and have a BBC sport channel!
