Grumpiness!!

If people can grump, or have a go at someone they do. This was never the case in earlier times.

I’m not talking about the N&P threads because they are different, I am talking about what May start off as cheerful, jolly, fellow man well met sort of threads which descend almost immediately into grump, grump moan, moan, criticise, criticise, argue, argue.

Sad isn’t it?

I wonder, though, WWM2 - and this is genuinely a ‘ponder’, not a challenge - if we’re remembering the past through rose tinted glasses? You know, ‘fings ain’t what they used to be’, ‘in the old days’, sort of thing? I remember the threads people have mentioned, but I can also recall threads (not N and P) that became quite argumentative, having started off as a chatty one.

Perhaps, but point me to a thread where there is genuine laughter and fun.

That is what I mean. I think probably that the balance has been tipped, and there are comments directed that take my breath away sometimes in their nastiness.

The balance should be re-calibrated.

Or maybe we are just getting older .........

You wouldn’t say that if you had just spent a week with a 98 year old, whose enthusiasm, laughter and sheer fun was a shining example of how we could enjoy life.

I used to enjoy the Blogs thread. So interesting.

GrannyGravy13 Tue 01-Jul-25 09:48:47

I agree with you Whitewavemark2 the joyful soul of GN is a distant memory.

Perhaps you should try resuscitation, start some fun threads please 👍

I sometimes wonder what people are really like in real life. Quite different, I would think. It is sometimes hard to convey humour because someone is sure to misinterpret it and take it seriously. So I don’t bother much- in real life I tell a lot of jokes which crack people up but I wouldn’t do it here. Also I think our sense of humour is a tad different here.

Yes, I know what you mean nanna.

It’s hard to convey humour in writing - it needs timing, gestures and facial expressions to make it work, doesn’t it. Obviously, we don’t have them online, so things can easily be misinterpreted.

Well done to those of you who contributed to threads discussed above, from ‘the early days’ - they sound hilarious🤣

I was a bit of a latecomer to GN … so missed all the fun.

Story of my life🙈🙈🙈

It's a shame that people are afraid to say anything humorous on here because so often it is taken the wrong way and the poster is shot down in flames.

Luckygirl3 Tue 01-Jul-25 10:09:07

To be honest I have not really noticed the increase in gloom and doom etc., but maybe I don't open the right threads!

I do think that being anonymous does lead to saying things you might not say face to face - I always ask myself this before pressing the Post button.

And I simply avoid threads that are becoming contentious - life is too short to be bothered with them. Political debate and differences of view - fine - but personal comments are not.

And there always have been, and always will be, those who just want to stir things up - but may be their lives are so bleak that this little frisson is all they have.

I would love to join some of the chat threads like the Kitchen, but struggle to remember who is who and who said what! Ah dear me!

Gransnet has been a source of support, humour and knowledge that has been a boon for many years. Thanks to those who keep it on the road!

Hilarious opening post, I miss Phoenix God rest her soul (I bet she is making him laugh)

HelterSkelter1 Tue 01-Jul-25 10:12:02

I have found the same on Mumsnet. Ten years or so ago when I started reading there were some threads which had me crying with laughter. Clever witty ... went on for pages. So funny. But now it is 75% people being offended by schools, teachers, mothers in law, neighbours, inheritances. I could go on. Still some good interesting stuff, but often the keyboard, not very bright, warriors intercept.
Full of people "fuming". When did that become such a state to be in?
Can't be doing with any of that in this weather...back to my book.

Anyone want to see Phoenix's (????) curse for the Idiot (otherwise known as the ar****le) She was fabulous.

I use that curse on our idiot (cannot say what our ASs call him) so often, I always think of your idiot and Phoenix

AGAA4 Tue 01-Jul-25 11:11:34

Yes I would like to see that curse again as a member of my family has just been very badly hurt by an idiot. Other words are available.

GrannyGravy13 Tue 01-Jul-25 11:18:27

Double bubble, toil and trouble,
Make his botty boil and bubble

Make his piles and scrotum itch
Give his eye a nasty twitch

Make his skin erupt and ooze
Make him allergic to all booze

Give him herpes, give him sores
Whenever he goes out of doors

Wish all foul things fall from above]
For hurting you and those you love

Curtesy of Phoenix RIP

I was on Gransnet from the early days under a different name life changed I went away for a time and then came back with another new name which I recently decided was not kind to myself so here I am disguised as an 80's perfume. Much more me don't you think?

Doodledog Tue 01-Jul-25 11:22:17

That is fabulous grin

I am going to save that and use it myself.

Samsara1 Tue 01-Jul-25 11:24:51

oops sorry hadn't finished or answered the op. Yes Gransnet has changed but so have we and possibly Gransnet now attracts different people. I've changed into 'very hard to excited about anything' kind of person and indeed from an agnostic to an atheist. I do think the times will live in are grumpy making though and at the moment its hot and brains are boiling. I certainly did enjoy all these threads you mentioned in former days and one lovely big meet up in M Harborough. I have made some great friends on Gransnet and meet often but not often enough!! flowers

boheminan Tue 01-Jul-25 11:33:43

Talking about the Argy Bargy, was that the pub that was originally opened by Pete? I used to head there for the occasional pint of wine and the banter would have me crying with laughter...shame it's closed.

AGAA4 Tue 01-Jul-25 11:39:56

Thank you GG13 I feel a bit better now.

Redcar Tue 01-Jul-25 11:46:38

I’m giggling at being followed on my travels by the Tena lady lorry!
And the poem/curse courtesy of phoenix!

kittylester Tue 01-Jul-25 12:00:28

Thanks GG.

AGA even if it doesn't work, saying it is enormous fun. And, we haven't seen anything of our Idiot for ages.

I'm sorry for everyone who has an Idiot in their lives but curse away.

And, isn't this a nice, friendly thread?☀️☀️

LucyAnna5 Tue 01-Jul-25 12:32:24

I’m always surprised when people say they ‘cried with laughter’ at some threads. I used to smile or maybe even chuckle a bit at some of the threads mentioned, but - seriously - crying? I guess humour is a very personal thing.

Pittcity Tue 01-Jul-25 12:36:44

I used to love joining the parties and generally having a laugh on GN. I attended many real life GN meetups which seem to now be few and far between.
Now I sit quietly and read adding a few carefully considered replies before retreating into a virtual corner.
So yes, GN has changed.

boheminan Tue 01-Jul-25 12:40:29

Yes, humour is a personal thing and thankfully I see a lot of humour in different situations. The Argy Bargy and Pete's Bar were very funny places to visit, light relief from other serious threads going on outside. Nowt wrong with crying with laughter (is there?)
