What’s your latest example?
This morning in Sainsbury’s I bought a new jar of Nescafé Decaf for DH.
Same size jars but . . .
Old jar. New jar
200g. 190g

I have been seeing this sort of thing for years now. I think these firms think we don't notice. I bet the price per jar is the same or even higher. I had a similar thing with a multi-pack of crisps recently.

It will have to stop at some point. Maybe they think we won’t notice by the time we are paying for an empty jar !

The size and width of a choccy Penguin is a real disappointment and ditto a KitKat or am I wrong and they were always tiny? I remember Waggon Wheels as huge but back then my hands were very small 😁

You are right on all counts! Not only that, around the 50s, I loved Mars Bars, mainly because I used to love nibbling the thick chocolate sides and very thick top. A while ago, I bought one to try. Big mistake! The chocolate wasn’t anywhere thick enough to be nibbled, not even the top! It was awful, and I’ll never buy one again.
With crisps, I find that there are only about 10 in a packet, and they are far too salty!
I think we were rather lucky as kids.

In Boots 2 emery boards in a pack that held 3 for the same price. One of many, many hidden increases in costs.

Toilet rolls.the tubes are wider and shorter every time!

Bread I buy has less slices which are smaller & price has gone up. With dodgy tum I have to get a loaf that does not make it react so stuck with paying more for less!

Shrinking crisp packets however is good.

Freedom frog chocolate bars used to be 6 for £1, now you only get 4 and they are smaller !

I buy boxes of halloumi fries (same shape as fish fingers) that I do in my air fryer. Used a box just last week, when I opened it each halloumi stick was much shorter compared to the previous boxes from the same store. It seems everything is being downsized because the powers that be think you won't realise that you're paying the same, but for less content.

They must think we're all daft. Kitkats definitely used to be larger - and Magnum ice creams have also shrunk!

For a couple of years now toothpaste used to be 125 ml standard size tube. Never saw anything else. Now its 75 ml or 100 ml both for lot more in price per ml. If you do find 125 ml it seems enormous.

RSALLAN2002 Sat 05-Jul-25 16:04:21

I bought a packet of pistacchios the other day. There were 7 empty half shells but only 2 shell-less nuts....

Greciangirl Sat 05-Jul-25 16:08:32

Altissimma.

Where do you buy Halloumi fries please?

David49 Sat 05-Jul-25 17:00:06

The government has mandated lower sugar content of foods and sweets so the portion size is now smaller, nothing more obvious than Mars bars.

AshleysGran Sat 05-Jul-25 17:37:43

Cat food! I buy boxes of 12 pouches. They used to be 12 x 100g, now down to 12 x 85g for the same price.

I find shrinkflation really dishonest. I'd rather pay a bit more but with no shortfall in actual product. At least then I know what I'm buying.

My mum said, her usual soap, has sort of been hollowed out. It weighs less than it used to.

Mt61 Sat 05-Jul-25 18:40:57

Chocolate too has shrunk

And yes, Mars bars wete so massive I couldn't eat a whole one in the past.
I remember cutting them into fat slices!
