My DGS loves Freddos. Can't believe they've now shrunk to pkts of 4 from 5! Not long ago they were 6.

Every manufacturer is doing it and they all think its OK to do this because we will just put up with this and pay the price.
Its marketing at its best and the only way is to not to buy it, but there will always be people who will.
I have found when I succomb not only am I paying more for less but the taste just isn't there so I've stopped buying these products and I just don't know what to buy or eat anymore, however am I losing weight? No I'm not so I don't know whats going on there!

I used to love Tesco’s German smoked cheese and meats selection. It disappeared off the shelf for months, now at last it’s back, but guess what the packet is slimmer and each slice of cheese or meat is so thin you can hardly taste it.

Tunnocks advertise that their Caramel Wafers are still the same size.

The modern day Mars is just like a Milky Way (never liked them as much when I was a kid) - far too squashy but always cheaper.
My dad used to cut the “olden day” bars into neat little slices on a saucer ….no he wasn’t being mean😊; it was just a nice little treat for a couple of us smaller kids.

My dad did that, too! There were four of us in our family so he would cut a Mars bar into four fat slices. Of course, we always argued about who had the end slices with the most chocolate on.

I do online shopping, they can't get away with the srinkflation so easily, most weeks there is a 'removed from range' - which actually means a size change!

Where shrinkflation is concerned the customer is definitely being “gas lit 🔥 but on a very low light.
I first noticed it with once 250g butter packs turning into 200g but now it is evident on lots of products.

M&S pack of cooked beef - sliced so thinly I had to use three slices to even taste it in a sandwich. My heart sinks too when I see those dreaded words “new, improved recipe” and, without fail, it is a much inferior version of its predecessor.

I love the memories that Gransnet brings back! I had forgotten about slicing Mars bars!
If you were to slice them now, you’d probably only get five or six slices. Sacrilege!

Mars Bars for sure - I'm another one who never used to be able to eat a whole one. And slicing them up - I'd forgotten all about that but yes, we used to do that too.

The cost of production has gone up in line with the other things in our lives.

The energy used, raw materials, transport etc all costing more. I guess they think making things smaller is more easy to accept to keep their customers.

I expect they will have done endless market research on the subject.

I think the smaller packs of some things is actually good, as if there are three of a treat I’ll eat the three. If there are two I’ll eat two!

I think it’s the shock factor of less in the packet and no warning that is irritating and somehow makes me feel cheated.

For a couple of years now toothpaste used to be 125 ml standard size tube. Never saw anything else. Now its 75 ml or 100 ml both for lot more in price per ml. If you do find 125 ml it seems enormous.

I buy dentalux toothpaste from Lidl. Its brilliant. 125g and only 69p. I've used it for years and I am complimented on my oral health by my hygienist at every 6 month check.

Block butter. So many brands are now 200grams instead of 250. Price about the same but 20% less butter.

Also, the coating is now listed as chocolatey coating, instead of chocolate. Here in Canada, anyway. Reading up on the difference, they use more fats mixed with cocoa powder instead of cocoa solids. It doesn't taste as nice. It would be interesting to try a UK made one and see if the coating is nicer chocolate there.

I used to make my own Mars Bar ice cream from Mars Bars. Not any more as they don’t taste as nice. Someone suggested that the chocolate isn’t real any more. Does anyone remember plain chocolate Mars Bars a few years ago? They were delicious but just for a limited time.

The listing of the coating as chocolate coating instead of chocolate in Canada is impressive. I’m not sure manufacturers in the UK are so honest! You are spot on in your comment that it doesn’t taste as nice, but then, very little does these days. In fact, I, a former chocoholic, am so underwhelmed with the taste of sweet things these days that I tend to eat more savoury treats.

Thanks Granmarderby10. I used to love Boost years ago but haven’t seen or thought about them for years so I will have to try one and see whether they are as I remembered them. I used to love Lion bars too. Remember them?
Twirls are ok but if I want just chocolate, I’d have a Flake. When I was little, there was a delicious packet dessert my mum used to make up. I think it was called Caramel pudding, or Caramel dessert. and was the best taste in the world!! You made it in the same way you would make a blancmange and once it set, it formed a skin on top. My mum used to crush a Flake and sprinkle it over the top. Heaven!
Can’t have much sweet stuff now (diabetic) but I can have a treat now and again.
