So at my local hair salon I heard two/three ladies saying they were thinking of Air Con units.. know the Govt are advertising heat pumps but thought maybe an Air Con unit would be more needed if/now we are getting warmer spring/summers..
know in the US and Australia most homes have them installed already.. my 2 fans just move around warm air but wondered what the initial costs and running costs were- any experiences or info here ?

I have a portable one, which my kind d.i.l. Picked up from some sale or the other. It looks like old portable calor gas heater.
But this one is electric but quite complicated - you’ve got to put water into this thing . I’ve given up on it. It’s in my garage now….. hopefully, d.i.l. won’t notice 😂

I’ve got a chiller unit from ProBreeze, you do put water in it, works great and it’s on wheels.

Sorry Bea cost about £100, minimal running costs thus far.

I bought a Black and Decker air con unit 2 weeks ago. Works well. Cools tbe room it is in. We used it last week durung the very hot spell and I expect to use it this summer and summers to come as and when we get more heatwaves. It is also a dehumidifier.

Be mindful of the fact that some can be very noisy.

Yes I know AC can be noisy.. on a holiday to Singapore some 20yrs Agi, I caught air con disease whereby I couldn’t breathe and had to get inhaler- this was very scary and we were staying with friends who recognised the symptoms and gave me an inhaler -know thats extreme- but do wonder if u have any breathing difficulties or dry eye syndrome, if they should warn you of this?

Yes we have one in our conservatory, it does the downstairs. A big bulky thing, that is pumped outside & is really noisy. Only use it now & again.

Our AC have air conditioning in all their upstairs rooms, absolute bliss for really hot nights. Not at all noisy, you can barely hear them.

One hasn’t any central heating upstairs and their air conditioning units blow hot air in the winter.

I am asthmatic and have eye problems the air-con has never exacerbated either.

We have ceiling fans in all upstairs rooms and are seriously considering changing to air conditioning units.

Of course if the builders were required to build new houses to a decent level things would b e better. I have lived abroad and travelled a lot. One of the best things is to have real double glazing with a big gap between the two panes of glass. This helps to keep back noise too. I also often had good outside wooden blinds that you lowered to suit yourself. Too much sun, lower to keep the rooms cool and the glare out. cold windy winter night, drop them down to give yourself another layer of protection and warmth, . These days I think no planning permission should be given for housing unless there is good solar panel all over the roof, and consideration for the air flow inside the house, so that you can make the most of cool air or heat at appropriate times. We had , for winter, a calor gaz heater, with wheels so that you could move it to suit yourself, you had a choice of 1 2 or 3 bars on and it could heat up very quickly.

Simpler ideas that I have used for years that can help . So dont throw out the old hot water bottle, but use it in the summer. Fill with very cold water and some ice cubes. Put on the floor and as and when take your feet from your sandals or slippers and place on bottle. Lovely and cool. I always , in the summer time pack a clean white flannel, that I have put into cold water and ice and squeezed out lightly, into a good plastic bag. This goes in my bag and is available at any time to wipe hands and faces and put to cool the neck. Can be used with no problem on plane, bus or train etc. and can be refreshed in a washroom later. At night in the heat, I also take the cold water bottle and the cool flannel to help get off to sleep and arrange the interior doors to give some air flow. Very simple but they work. When I lived in Syria had no aircon in myh flat but there were tiles which helped etc. I dont like noisy aircon and nor do I like the bills!!

We had air con fitted in the lounge and in each bedroom a few years ago. Best thing we ever did. Once it gets down to temperature it just ticks over in the background and you can barely hear it. I have it on all night during heatwaves and forget its on

Also heats and dehumidifies

It's Toshiba

I've got 2 portable ones. They are great. The only problem is the set up of the hose is made for American windows so it can be difficult to find a window to hang the pipe out of

I bought a portable AC unit a few years ago in January after a very hot summer. It's absolutely brilliant . I have an attic bedroom that's like a furnace. I put the air con on about 8pm and in an hour or so the room is freezing . I turn it off when I go to bed and use a fan overnight.
The unit is bulky and noisy but worth it's weight in gold.
However fancy or expensive a fan is they don't chill the room.
This was about £200 and I guess it costs a bit to run but it's only used a few times a year.

Mt61 Fri 18-Jul-25 22:18:18

Ours also heat’s & dehumidifies. Brand is Airforce

Sar53 Fri 18-Jul-25 22:52:35

We had an air con unit fitted in our lounge about 3 years ago.
One of the best things we have ever done.
It's quiet and we haven't noticed any difference in our bills.
It cost under 2k for the unit plus fitting.
This last few weeks it's been wonderful .

Mt61 Sat 19-Jul-25 00:38:57

Sar53 is the bulk of it on the outside ( like they have in America? Ours is indoors, pipe leads outside. Thinking that might be the reason ours is noisy.
Worth it though to have a room like a fridge in this heat.

I looked at these last year - some are quite attractive now it seems to me.
They were the wall mounted sort with the pump outside and with a Hepa filter.

JamesandJon33 Sat 19-Jul-25 02:29:27

We have one in our conservatory. Warm in winter, switches easily to cooling in summer. Excellent and cheap to run also.

JamesandJon33 Sat 19-Jul-25 02:30:50

p.s. very quiet as wall mounted and pump outside.

NotSpaghetti Sat 19-Jul-25 08:39:08

What make is it please James and Jon?

Esmay Sat 19-Jul-25 08:54:03

An air conditioner would be nice .
I'd be very happy with ceiling fans -great after a cool shower !

Chocolatelovinggran Sat 19-Jul-25 08:54:40

Some outside - mounted ones may be noisy for neighbours, if you are close to other houses. Complaints about this sometimes are registered with Environmental Protection Officers.
Some are noisier than others.

Sar53 Sat 19-Jul-25 09:06:42

The outside part of the unit is not noisy at all.
The inside part is very unobtrusive and again is quiet.
It can be used for cooling and heating and is connected via an app to our phones.
The make is Midea.

FlexibleFriend Sat 19-Jul-25 09:09:55

Yes we have a/c in all the bedrooms and in the lounge, don't find them noisy at all. We had them installed 3 years ago and as we have solar panels they are very cheap to run.

BlueBelle Sat 19-Jul-25 09:11:13

Good grief my old Victorian house never gets warm enough to warrant air con🤣🤣🤣
