The US president said that a “horrible invasion” was taking place, adding it had to “stop”, shortly after touching down on Air Force One at Glasgow Airport.

“Asked about illegal migration to Britain, Mr Trump said: “On immigration you better get your act together or you’re not going to have Europe anymore.”
He continued: “You’ve got to stop this horrible invasion that is happening to Europe, many countries in Europe.”
“Some leaders have not let it happen, and they’re not getting the proper credit... I could name them to you right now, but I’m not going to embarrass the other ones. But stop, this immigration is killing Europe.”
Mr Trump, who has made border control a key priority of his presidency, said: “Last month we had nobody entering our country.”

Well done Trump. He’s not wrong! 🇬🇧

A very beautiful French film

Bilal is caught hiding in a lorry with others- the custms police put probes into lorries to detect carbon monoxide, so they have to plastic bags over their heads and stop breathing for as long as possible. Bilal had been tortured back home and water boarded, so he panics, and all get caught and sent back. The others are more than furious with him and threaten him. With no money left, he decides to cross himself but can't swim.

A very very moving story- and all along I think, he could be my grandson.

Greece has closed its borders for all seeking asylum for the next three months.

Anyone landing on its shores will be immediately taken to a detention centre and then deported.

Alongside the reintroduction of border control by the European Commission, which gives countries in the Schengen states the right to temporary close its borders.

Europe is closing down to asylum seekers at the moment.

^It is usually a decision made by the whole family to send the most able and fit to seek asylum.^
OK. Good decision, but why risk the life and limb of that person by dangerously crossing the Channel in a small boat when they could safely seek asylum in France? (And in France, the French are asking why they don't seek asylum in Italy or Spain). I'm sure half these young men haven't got brothers, aunties, uncles, cousins etc waiting to help them in the UK, so my choice would be to start a new life where I safely landed. What's the ulterior motive for getting to the UK?

Language is one issue. It's been shown that people from different countries tend to go to specific countries. Another factor is existing networks.

Incidentally, Cyprus, Estonia, Austria, Greece, Germany, Switzerland, Luxemburg and Belgium all grant more asylum applications per head of existing population than the UK. Germany is by far the number one desired destination for asylum seekers.

There was once a problem with people being transported in lorries. I dont hear about that now so what happened there? I will see if I can find out.

I've done 6 crossings so far this year.
The lorries are thoroughly checked, inside and out, and the paperwork. As are coaches, everyone has to get off.
It always amuses me that individual cars are occasionally asked, vous avez des immigrés? Like do you have wine and beer?

Oreo Thu 31-Jul-25 14:06:15

The boats took over where the lorries left off.The lorry drivers faced such severe sentences that they had to stop.Quite rightly.

I thought vote leave told everyone that the UK couldn’t do that because we were in the EU? And yet Greece are in the EU. Surely they ( and Farage) weren’t lying?

Migrants still arrive in significant numbers by lorry, it’s just that public interest has moved on to small boat arrivals.

I think that the largest numbers of people here with no right to stay though is actually people who have arrived on a visitors passport and don’t leave when it expires.

I live in East Midlands in a county where 90% of the residents are white. Nowadays, when I go to the town centre, I notice more non-white migrants, namely Africans followed by Indians and then Chinese. Not many Muslims. This seems to happen after Brexit.

The Muslims have become the newest scapegoats in the war against immigrants, like the Jews in the 1940s and I am so, so thankful that none of my Muslim siblings and their families are living in this country.

If Labour and Yvette Cooper do not resolve the problem of the small boats arriving in the UK, I believe Reform will win the next election, and Nigel Farage will become the next Prime Minister.

Cant quite understand why the UK Home Office does not set up processing centres for asylum seekers at the British embassies outside UK.

The irony is there are 6k cases of British nationals who cannot even bring their foreign spouses and children into the UK because they do not meet the income threshold of ÂŁ39K pa.

If they do not earn ÂŁ39k, they have to show a bank account of ÂŁ89k.

MayBee70 the European Commission made a directive allowing members to close their borders.

My post of 10.51…

So how are Reform actually going to resolve the problem?

Chocolatelovinggran Thu 31-Jul-25 16:16:20

MayBee, Mr Farage will solve this problem, which has taxed most European countries for some years by .. er..magic fairy dust? He has not offered an alternative solution. I'm sure that the government would be happy to initiate any proven, workable ideas that Mr Farage might suggest.

Boz Thu 31-Jul-25 16:19:49

Would leaving the ECHR be the answer for Reform. They don't like Europe. Then you can do what you like re; immigration

Chocolatelovinggran Thu 31-Jul-25 17:20:47

And, Box, what would " do what you like" be, exactly?

Casdon Thu 31-Jul-25 17:26:03

Come on now Chocolatelovinggran, we all know Farage has the power to part the sea and turn them all back whence they came before they actually land in the UK.

LizzieDrip Thu 31-Jul-25 17:30:32

Chocolatelovinggran

And, Box, what would " do what you like" be, exactly?

Good question!

The mind boggles with regard to what Mr Farage would actually like to do with asylum seekers and immigrants.

Boz Thu 31-Jul-25 17:34:36

You will never stop the boats but you can make it more difficult to stay by picking up and deporting illegals. The message would soon get out and make the UK unpopular.

Aveline Thu 31-Jul-25 17:36:14

Alternative suggestion for Reform fans: immediately boats arrive full of young African men, transfer them directly to well armed large ships and sail them back to north Africa. A few months of that should deter future irregular arrivals. Harsh but it can't go on.

Casdon Thu 31-Jul-25 17:42:40

Aveline, from 2018 to 2024, citizens of six countries – Iran, Afghanistan, Iraq, Albania, Syria and Eritrea have made up 70% of those crossing in small boats, and only Eritrea is in Africa?

Chocolatelovinggran Thu 31-Jul-25 17:46:04

Boz, as has been explained, people are not " illegal" until processes have been undertaken to establish this.
Those found illegal are then deported.
The government, and, indeed, the previous government, have been doing this.

Aveline Thu 31-Jul-25 17:46:16

Looking at the boats most contain young black Africans. 898 arrived yesterday alone. 1770 so far this week alone. 1770 to feed, accommodate fund etc etc. Can this be sustained?
I know it's not 'kind' however, when will enough be enough?

StripeyGran Thu 31-Jul-25 17:48:51

It always amuses me that individual cars are occasionally asked, vous avez des immigrés? Like do you have wine and beer?

Casdon Thu 31-Jul-25 17:49:07

I’m sorry Aveline, but they aren’t predominantly black Africans. Here is the data.

The ECHR protects you and me. But hey, let’s forgo that protection if it takes protection away from people fleeing from war zones…
