What wakes you up in the morning?

Usually it’s needing the loo! Or arthritic pain.
I’m currently away from home on a summer school on a university campus. I’ve been awake a while, but I’m guessing everyone in the building is awake now at 6.30, as the bin lorry has just been. That made enough noise in itself, then the men were shouting as they worked, but what really amused me was an automated voice, in the poshest of accents, announcing
“ Stand clear. Vehicle reversing”.

Hopefully I wake up fairly early to enjoy a pleasant day. I take it easy and don't rush but there's usually something I want to get on with or go somewhere.

Yep....withknobson - that is a most unpleasant attitude to the birds. They're just doing what birds do - ie singing.

I used to like the Dawn Chorus I had way back - ie back 2 house moves ago - in the 1970's. Unfortunately there's rather fewer birds around than there was back in that decade. So - even though I'm now in a noticeabley more "countryish" area these days = there aren't nearly as many birds around to sing as I noticed back then.

But - yep...it is illegal to chop down trees/hedges at the relevant time of year (like right now for instance) - though I've had a go at people for breaking the law in that respect twice since moving here (and one of them was a former priest!!!!! - and the police guy who came out to inspect all the resultant feathers on the ground tried very hard and succeeded in not noticing the feathers somehow............hmmm.....) and another one was daft enough to advertise he'd do hedgecutting - right now! (funnily enough that post on a Facebook group vanished after it had been noticed.....hmmm....).

I read that blackbirds are decreasing in numbers, as are starlings - and probably lots of other birds too I can't understand people complaining about birds. And, anyway, do blackbirds "squawk"? I would say that crows - or parakeets - "squawk".

Whichever, I would never want to harm a bird's nest. We need to learn to live and let live. It seems that so many animals now are being described as "vermin" - pigeons, squirrels, seagulls, foxes, et, etc.

As humans more and more take over the animals territory - eg building yet more housing for our steadily increasing overpopulation figures - then I think that's one factor why there are fewer birds (fewer anything....) around.

All those people (both farmers and home gardeners) that use nasty chemicals as well (weedkiller anyone?!) won't be helping either.

…or just be grateful you’re able to hear him? The blackbird’s song is the last bird song of the night here and it would be a poorer world without it.
I’m in awe of all you GNs waking happily at dawn. After years of getting up early for work and now every weekday for school run, I still hate getting out of bed!
