Have you a favourite one, for me southwold scores quite high. But for a family day out I still love good ole skeggy ,Although last time I was there was five years ago so could well have changed

Marske in North Yorkshire

Any Yorkshire beach where there is usually just one man and his dog there 😁

This is so very true of Marske beach. It's so unspoilt and natural.

Lots of nice enough beaches here in your posts - but in my mind they aren't good enough for me if they aren't West Coast.

I want solitude, sand, pebbles, rocks (and rock pools), seaweed... and sunsets.

So all the South and East facing ones don't cut it.
Sorry!

...I realise some here are West facing.
- just saying.

Spent teenage years in the Southend area. Went to Southend College of Technology to become a shorthand typist against my better judgement but have to admit it helped me with technology in my later years and I just synced my new toothbrush to my Oral B app. One heatwave saw me and younger sister entering the awful muddy sea for a swim. Someone stole our clothes on the beach and we made our way home on the bus in bikinis. No idea how we afforded the bus fare.

Bournemouth, Swanage and West Wittering. Nice sandy beaches.

Friends of mine booked Bournemouth for a weeks stay, said it had gone to the wall, not as nice as it used to be to be.

We spent many holidays near Bournemouth, at Boscombe. Beach hut and the children running back and forth to the sea. Then they turned the promenade into a car park, and it was too dangerous for the children to run about. Then the big shops and the independent ones disappeared and most things were concentrated near the sea. We haven’t been back for a while.

I do like a south-facing beach

Tentsmuir, near St Andrews or the wonderful beaches in Northumberland.

Sunset in my home town.
The long structure gives it away: Southend.
I know it’s not pretty 😂 but, I got the estuary, with huge skys, I can be in London in an hour.
I can be at the airport in 15 mins where I can get a flight to numerous destinations in Europe.

I’ve got a photo of my mum, little brother and me taken on the pier at Southend in 1965. We’re sitting in a little carriage waiting for the miniature train that ran/runs along the pier to move off.
Great place for a day out, we lived in East London then and Southend was our nearest seaside town by train.

Trisha
The trains are still running 😊
In November we are decorating the whole 1/1/4 mile of pier in knitted poppies. I say we as I’m one of those knitting them.

I'm not a beach loving person but Hunstanton beach was nice when the children were young .

I love Cumbria. The lakes are stunning , especially on a sunny day .

Mt61. I do agree about the town of Bournemouth but I still think the sea front is one of the best.
Indeed the town is very rundown with derelict shops and a growing crime rate especially near the pier on a Friday evening. It is a popular venue for stag and hen do’s which can lead to raucous behaviour and drunkenness. I feel sorry for the residents but still feel that the natural beauty of the area is evident.

We have a timeshare on the cliffs of Bournemouth overlooking the beach. I'd agree with your friend, since the advent of stag and hens, it has a propensity to be somewhat feral at times. We avoid the town like the plague, the beach is good though, and nice vistas in each direction, one way looking towards the Isle of Wight and the other way Old Harry Rocks. The environs are still very attractive, I like the drive towards Sandbanks with the view over Brownsea Island on the way to get the chain ferry over to Purbeck.. Others have already pointed out beautiful Studland beach over there, a great one to walk on. Also Swanage, a lovely old fashioned sea side town with a sandy beach. Going up the coast in the other direction we like Lymington a nice sort of yachty place and always stop at Milford on Sea where the Isle of Wight looks so close, practically swimmable, well not me, but someone who is a strong swimmer and could go that distance.

We are so lucky to live within reach of such fantastic and different beaches, each with its own character. We live now about as far from the sea as anyone in England could get, but still get our regular beach fix. My favourite bit of the coast is where I was brought up in NE England - Saltburn, Runswick and Robin Hood’s Bays, Staithes, etc etc. The sunrise and sunset over Whitby takes some beating.

We’d go over to Morecambe and Blackpool every year so my mam could pronounce them “very nice, but not nearly as nice as our coast”. grin

Whitby seaside. I'm moving there in January of 2026. Can't wait!

I vote also for Donegal as quite a few are flat and easier to manage with mobility issues

A wide choice of places on the Isle of Wight - I still think of it as my home. I was brought up there and often went down to the beach with friends for a swim when I was in my teens. My primary school there had a swimming pool where we learned to swim - and there was one at my secondary school too. It was great

Brancaster beach in Norfolk. Golden sand, seals and their babies on a nearby inlet and a wonderful little takeaway hut on the way in - just perfect!

jusnoneed Mon 04-Aug-25 10:12:29

Live in Dorset so we used to take the boys to Shell Bay which is part of Studland, Weymouth occasionally but prefered going nearer to Portland. Along the causeway there is an area behind the Chesil bank which is known as the Fleet, the water shallow and always warm. Often used to see other people we knew from where we lived.
Charmouth another place they liked, the river flows across the beach and into the sea.
Exmouth beach in Devon with good rock pools.

So am .I! I loved Whitby when I holidayed there some years ago. The whole area is to die for. Had an aunt and uncle in Scarborough and they took me there, amongst other lovely places.
