Maybe it inspired you, made you laugh, or just hit at the right moment.

On the other hand, Every silver lining has a cloud...

That was one of Dad’s favourites 😄

Well Rosie certainly had a good stab at it.

Is this another quote?🤔

StripeyGran Mon 04-Aug-25 21:03:42

No. it's somebody who chooses to be spiteful and mean?
Who likes to shame a person and assume intellectual superiority.
No worries.

I still enjoy it.

Never let a fool kiss you, or a kiss fool you ….
Unfortunately I heard it too late 🤣

Never accept 2nd best
Written in a book given to me by my late karate sensei.
I have now arranged for it to be on my kickboxing necklace

You can only make a first impression once.

To live with the saints in heaven is glory,
To live with the saints on earth is another story.

I heard this in church and it still makes me laugh

“Its better to keep your mouth shut and have people think you’re a fool than open your mouth and prove it “ Often very apt.

Used to love the fabulous Phil Glenister as Gene Hunt in Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes. He used to come out with some classics. Almost all inappropriate, unwoke and very, very funny.

if you carry on doing the same thing and expect a different result you are nuts

The moving finger writes and having writ moves on. Nor all thy piety nor wit can move it back to cancel half a line nor all thy tears wash out a word of it.
A bit depressing but the first one that occcurred.

When I started Grammar school in 1968 my love parents bought me a copy of the Oxford English Dictionary.
In the front my Mum wrote this quote by Longfellow.
" The heights of great men , reached and kept ,were not attained by sudden flight , but they , while their companions slept ,were toiling upward in the night"
She als wrote " given with love to make good use of".
I have held that quote dear all my life . It has spurred me on to work hard and try to do my very best in life..
I hope I have made my lovely parents proud of me.
The dictionary remains on my bookshelf although I'm now 68.
My parents died many years ago but Mum's sweet message, written in her neat handwriting, remains in my dictionary along with my records of all the marks I ever achieved in my exams at school.

^If you cannot say anything nice, then don’t say anything at all^

Both of my Grans used this, and it has remained with me.

Totally agree.

Additionally, it is not always what is said, however, HOW IT IS SAID !!

Even if you don't have all things you want, be grateful for the things you don't have that you don't want.

Big things are in the small things.

"You can't help what you feel but you can help what you do about it." My mother said this to me when I was in my late teens and I have carried this with me all my life. I am now 79 and have applied this saying many times over over the years.

When one door closes another always opens - it may be a different door but there is always another door.
You can't rewrite history so turn the page and start writing the future

‘This is something up with which I will not put,’ Churchill, having a go at the extreme pedantry which decreed that you couldn’t have a preposition at the end of a sentence.

According to my English teacher in Senior school, he wrote it on an Income tax return that he found to be couched in incomprehensible Civil Service wording.

"There's nowt sae queer as folk" said by my father and his mother and in their view should be understood that we should learn from those who think differently to ourselves.

Another from the same side of the family was "Cheer up, it might never happen!"

My Mum used to say:
'You don't half see them when you haven't got your gun'.
Another of Mum's gems:
'Once around her, twice around Hyde Park'.
