My garden has got a bit ragged due to illness etc.

Someone has quoted to:
- remove all the large plants that have sprung up around my small pond and replant with new rock plants round the edge.
- cut back the climbers that have gone a bit wild along my side fence with ruised bed beneath - may be 10 metres.
- put down a membrane on a very small area (c.6 feet by 4) and plant creeping thyme and blue star creeper.
- tidy up a 10 metre long very narrow path edge and remove the decorative stones so that it goes back to grass.
- sort out my pot garden on the gravel at the front of the house - there are probably 20 pots of varying sizes that need dead plants removed and replaced, top dressing and weeding.

He is quoting £425 for a day with 2 people.

How does that sound to you?

Sounds very reasonable to me if you’re happy with their work, good gardeners are hard to come by, we had a brilliant chap for years, then he expanded and took on more staff, who weren’t very good, so I got another one, £45.00 an hour, and we could never see what he’d done.
Now we just get someone in for the big jobs, and do the rest ourselves.

I'll come back and let you know how it went!

Whitewavemark2 Sat 09-Aug-25 13:51:20

In the south east you pay £200 just for one chap to visit your house, if you are lucky enough to find someone willing to do so!

So it sounds good to me, but I appreciate that there will be different rates in different parts of the country.

It sounds like a lot to do in the time and I'd be happy with that quote. Presumably they are proper gardeners and know what they're doing when they cut back the climbers? They could do a lot of damage if they didn't do it well.

Luckygirl that’s a very good quote. I paid £285 for a small front garden,(mostly paved) , weed the borders and lay membrane and bark ( I bought the bark)

Sadgrandma Sat 09-Aug-25 17:21:47

Sounds OK to me , I’d go for it. Better the devil you know…

jomo Wed 13-Aug-25 14:44:32

knspol Wed 13-Aug-25 14:49:59

Sounds like a really good price to me!

Greenfinch Wed 13-Aug-25 14:58:00

I would be very happy with a quote like that. I have had much higher.

Leanetta Wed 13-Aug-25 14:58:50

Sorry - I came here expecting some sort of literary quote, or t-shirt slogan. But now I’m here - I think that’s reasonable

Lahlah65 Wed 13-Aug-25 15:03:09

About the going rate for gardeners I think.

Celieanne86 Wed 13-Aug-25 16:59:17

I paid £50 an hour for two gardeners to restore my badly neglected garden due to DH illness. The first time they came they did four hours £200 and worked like Trojan’s,
Next week the same another £200 but at last I could see my garden coming back to life. Third week the same £200 and they fetched compost, new plants which I paid extra for and made a lovely job of my planter pots and asked permission to take before and after photos of their work, I readily agreed.
As I am unable to do anything in the garden now, not even a bit of dead heading we worked out a system where they would come every two weeks just for an hour for maintenance, mow the lawns etc. Up to three visits now I have paid them three times so thats £150. Total is £750 for their work, plus things I have bought it’s about £1,000 but I don’t regret any of it, they are a lovely couple and always check with me before doing anything. They remove all the rubbish, and I’m so glad I found them. The price the poster has been quoted for the initial work is very fair but don’t forget maintenance unless able to DIY.

They are obviously willing to work hard as that seems quite a lot to do in a day tbh the quote seems reasonable we pay our gardener £100 for half a day, she doesn't manage to do a fraction of that but she is extremely thorough and does the jobs I can't face doing these days.

BlueBelle Wed 13-Aug-25 17:18:33

Think I m going into gardening !

Luckygirl3 Wed 13-Aug-25 17:52:11

They are coming tomorrow - I'll let you know how it goes!

Madmeg Wed 13-Aug-25 17:53:06

Send them to me! I couldn't get a quote for such work for anything as good as that - and no, I'm not in an up-market area.

I am a great advocate of skill swapping, and once your garden is set up as you like it perhaps you could investigate amongst friends something like this.

We used to have a system , where each person was given 3 tickets free to begin with. Then we had 2 lists. One was jobs that needed doing, and the other was a list of peoples skills available.

That way you did not have to match someone with set skills, so I could offer to drive you wherever you wanted to go. You would pay the fuel and I would take you wherever you wanted. I could also do babysitting, some gardening taking children to parks, or swimming or whatever. I hate sewing but am rather a perfectionist about things being well finished. So I could look down the list and pay with a ticket for someone to do that for me. If you get the picture.

The other thing once the garden is as you want it , is that you find another keen gardener and arrange to water each others garden when you are away. That is much better than asking family or whatever, because you can rest easy that a gardener will be looking after your garden as you would like.

Hope you get sorted out to your satisfaction with your garden, and if you want some good ideas then I would look at the local Gardening Club, and ask them for recommendations . They might have good ideas about suitable plants for your area , and may also know trustworthy people to do the garden

If an 8 hour day approx £50 an hour. Sounds reasonable.

ArthurAskey Wed 13-Aug-25 18:46:29

Sounds about right as long as the job doesn’t get strung out over 2 days. Gardeners in the South are charging £40 an hour!

MaggsMcG Thu 14-Aug-25 08:13:52

I was quoted £850 for a similar job with just a few extras. If you can afford it, then I think you should do it. If you keep them supplied with tea they might do a few extra bits if you're lucky.

Luckygirl3

Thank goodness my premium bonds came up trumps this month!

Lucky girl indeed!! Hope it goes well

Witzend Thu 14-Aug-25 09:15:23

The young chap who looks after our communal areas recently upped his charge to £30 an hour. The previous rise was down to the ULEZ charge (we’re in outer SW London) - he’d had to buy a newer van for all his kit, or pay £12 a day,

He’s very good and reliable, though

windmill1 Thu 14-Aug-25 09:19:38

Do not part with any money up front.

Luckygirl3 Thu 14-Aug-25 12:36:15

They are here and have been working their tripe out!!

Aldom Thu 14-Aug-25 14:33:50

That expression is a new one on me Luckygirl. Not heard 'working their tripe out ' before, but I must say, it's very descriptive. grin
It took me a minute to work out what it means.
