On my list of possible Facebook friends suggestions, up popped none other than Prince William! Somehow I don't think I'll send him a request to be friends! Anyone else had strange suggestions for friends?

NotAGran55 Mon 11-Aug-25 06:10:18

It will be a fake profile granfromafar Every celebrity has them unfortunately.

CariadAgain Mon 11-Aug-25 07:25:39

I've had Donald Trump's son come up....or was he?

Aldom Mon 11-Aug-25 07:38:56

I had Prince William last week.
Unfortunately for him
I'm too busy preparing to move house to accept the invitation. grin

I get these fake US Generals and the like seemingly desperate to be my friend. I soon click the remove button. A friend of mine, vulnerable after her husband dying, fell for one such creep and parted with a six figure sum before mentioning it to her friends who frantically waved red flags. Sadly, that money has gone. Beware of scammers.

Aldom Mon 11-Aug-25 08:21:36

I usually get a variety of medical doctors/surgeons. I remove and block them.
A friend was caught by a similar scammer. She was sending small amounts of money, until her bank managed to convince her that it was a scam.

I don't go anywhere near FB, not even for suggested knitting groups 😅 but I do have an Instagram account. I was mildly flattered at the steady stream of handsome "silver fox" types asking to befriend me, until my daughter informed me to "join the dots" - i.e. that none of them are real! They stopped once I changed my (rather flattering) profile pic to one of a nondescript bunch of flowers!

I had one from Sergei Lavrov!

I'm not on Facebook, but I'm on Twitter and Instagram.

I very rarely have problems on Twitter, but they're always coming up on Instagram!

I've had King Charles' brother, randy Andy, sending me a Follow request. Whether it was him or a scammer, I don't know, but I deleted it anyway, as I can't stand him. It might have been because I follow both of his daughters on there - Bea and Genie's accounts are real -

While I detest the Trumps, I do like Baron, so I follow his true account, and a few WWE wrestlers, including Stone Cold Steve Austin, and Glenn ''Kane'' Jacobs, again, all genuine.

But I get loads and loads of the boring army/oil rigs/medical coming through, and they're all widowers with kids, who they don't see too often, never married or single, childless working the tills at Tesco!

I once had a photo of a hard-boiled egg as my Profile picture and had some creepy bloke from Africa with the most agonizingly painful spelling and grammar telling me he loves my photo as I'm a very beautiful lady with lovely short black hair and brown eyes! I actually have blond/grey hair down to my bum and blue eyes, and am quite ugly! Said he's deeply in love with me, while asking for money and passports and ''other'' things, as in intimate!

He wanted me to move to Africa so I could be his wife, and we would have loads of kids, and it would greatly please his ageing mother!

What he was really saying he wants a domesticated skivvy /housewife chained to the hot, dry land, his bed and kid care duties!

Freaks, the lot of them!

The weirdest one I got was David Cameron. He obviously hadn’t looked at my timeline.

Witzend Mon 11-Aug-25 10:11:40

I only really use FB for a closed charity craft group.
Was startled the other day to receive a ‘friend’ request from a Canadian cousin I’d never met until he more or less invited himself to stay over 10 years ago.

He stayed 10 days, was taken all over to see the sights, and barely ever put his hand in his pocket. And after he left, there was not so much as an email to say thanks. And not a word since.

So I don’t think I’m being more of a nasty cynic than usual, to think he’s probably angling after another freebie visit!
Needless to say, I won’t be ‘friending’ him!

Allira Mon 11-Aug-25 10:36:15

I'm not on Instagram or X but am on FB and have never been lucky enough to have friend requests from any of these high profile people!
Watch out now, they'll all be turning up like buses. 😁

BlueBelle Mon 11-Aug-25 11:01:56

Not that Ed Sheeran again?! He’ll do anything to increase his FB friends. He chased me for months, so you need to be strict with him.😁

Allira Mon 11-Aug-25 14:39:26

Still no Prince William. ☹

"People you may know" look quite interesting, however!

MiniMoon Mon 11-Aug-25 15:00:36

It's a fake account. I had a friend request from General Mark Millie, a retired US General. I didn't bother adding him to my friends.

I believe they usually just want money. Good thing you didn’t believe him.

poppysmum Wed 13-Aug-25 14:18:58

I get lots of requests from pop stars though goodness knows why they would want to talk to me! these people who do these fake accounts they have too much time on their hands!

EEJit Wed 13-Aug-25 14:26:06

I've had two friend requests in the same vein.

Shortly after my sister died I got a friend request suppodedly from her. The same shortly after the death of a close friend

Robin202 Wed 13-Aug-25 14:37:01

I always get fake US military men requesting to be my friend….. and they're always quite handsome. Delve deeper and you’ll find their friends are all Nigerian or they only set up their profile the day before!

Lettice Wed 13-Aug-25 15:13:16

Just today I have received a Friend Request (not a Friend Suggestion) from someone called David Zachary from Nashville, Tennessee, with the accompanying photo of Paul Hollywood. Obviously a scam. The strangest one I have had was from an American man who, when I checked his profile (because I am nosy) had a long list o friends all called "Linda" which is my name, so he collected Lindas eh, not this one.

Iam64 Wed 13-Aug-25 15:19:33

I’m another who gets fake US military men asking to be fb friends 😂

granfromafar Wed 13-Aug-25 16:22:24

I did get a 'silver fox' type US military man wanting to play against me at Words with Friends. Soon realised what he was after after a brief conversation and duly blocked him!

Mojack26 Wed 13-Aug-25 16:41:22

Fake profile,loads of them about.
