Andrew Lownie's book came out today. I have yet to read it but apparently Andrew and Fergie are both shown in a very unfavourable light.

I can't help feeling sorry for Beatrice and Eugenie.

Andrew Lownie has written this book with the sole intent of making money from those members of the public who are slavering with spiteful enjoyment at another's downfall.

Don't pretend this book is serving any useful purpose other than (possibly) enriching its author.

I think there’s more to it than that. Have you listened to any extracts or him talking about it? He certainly doesn’t come across as anti Royalist.

Anniebach Fri 15-Aug-25 19:19:31

Andrew Lownie said “I am a monarchist” , I believe him

lainieb56 Fri 15-Aug-25 20:23:35

I saw it in Waterstones today. Nice cover. But wouldn't bother with the insides.

Iam64 Fri 15-Aug-25 20:33:02

He is a monarchist and a respected historian. I suspect his book contains well researched information that is relevant to our history, to the future of the monarchy.
I skim the daily mail but don’t pay to read. I wouldn’t pay to read this, or the salacious stuff about the alleged estrangement in the Beckham family. However, I see the Beckham coverage as unnecessary gossip, intrusion into what should be personal. Yes I know, they live in the public eye and that exposes them to gossip
I do not regard this book as gossip

How difficult it must be for a Monarch like Charles, dedicated and with the whole country at heart, to have a brother like Andrew, whom he probably loves but then knows he should distance himself from him.

Cath9 Fri 15-Aug-25 20:49:48

I wouldn’t bother reading any books written about the Royal family. But I was rather surprised when, many years ago, Prince Andrew was mistaken for an intruder in Buckingham Palace. He turned around to the police with the remark
‘ I am Prince Andrew

No joke added

I heard Andrew Lownie interviewed by Times Radio the other day. His book is well researched and referenced. I think the implications are very serious regarding the Epstein involvement, he alleges that Russia has all the evidence on Andrew that implicates him in much more than we currently know. In the end, if that is the case, it would be better for the monarchy, and the UK, if he sees the writing on the wall now, and retires to a completely private life, rather than drip feeding taking place which will further damage the monarchy.

I agree. I am going to buy the book and read it. I think the monarchy is in trouble because of a few characters. They could help themselves by not taking so much money from the public - money for wind turbines on their land and charging for hospitals and MOD - the country is struggling and they should help.

Oh dear flappergirl - always best to do some research before writing rubbish and getting egg on your face!

The late Queen Mother didn't die with 'debts'. She had a £4m overdraft with Coutts which was easily repaid as her assets far far exceeded that sum.

And 'yes' the Bishop of Gloucester was provided with a house but not by 'my' King - or yours unless you were born 500-years ago, as the King who did so was Henvy VIII !!!

And I can't even be bothered to check your other 'claims'!

The late Queen must have thought highly of Sarah Ferguson as she gifted her dogs to SF on her death.

But did SF actually want the dogs??

Sarah certainly enjoys having her photograph with the dogs, herself centre of shot, with 30 roomed house must be more than one boot room !

Esmay -

Why were you surprised?

He's a Historian and this tome will be referred to in the decades/centuries to come. Much as we read about Henry VIII now
.

You can't tell a book by its cover, Iainieb56!!

Possibly not.

Who remembers much about the brothers of Kings?

Anniebach Sat 16-Aug-25 10:31:48

A brother who was involved in business with other countries
and who socialised with Epstein and Maxwell

Allira Sat 16-Aug-25 10:37:21

He'll be a couple of paragraphs in the future.

I am not a fan of Andrew's but one thing I read about him in the serialisation of this book was that he had lost his virginity very young, pre-teens I think. I don't want to excuse his behaviour but it does rather highlight the problems he has in the way he views sex. It is often the case that the sexual abuse of a boy by a woman is viewed as something that is seen as a positive thing (especially by other men) but actually can have the same feelings of shame, helplessness, violation, self loathing, etc that a young girl would have. These events without help or support can lead to the victims being promiscuous or even abusers themselves. So whilst I don't like Andrew's behaviour, I do have some compassion and I'm not sure that Lownie should have revealed this so publicly.

Being made public has helped you to find sympathy and
understanding for Andrew , perhaps it was the same for Epstein ? and perhaps the author thought the same as you

Celieanne86 Sat 16-Aug-25 12:46:23

Well I’m reading it on Kindle, I’m up to chapter six and I’ve got to admit it’s just interesting so far as I remember everything as it happened. I will keep going and report back after I’ve read a few more chapters.

To say nothing of the excesses of the Queen Mother and the enormous debts she left behind. Or Lord Mountbatten and the Kincarra (spelling?) Children's Home scandal. Or indeed our King who furnished the Bishop of Gloucester with a house and threatened to "chase off" the victim of his pedophilia. Time to get rid of this over privileged, above the law and archaic institution.

Agree with you, an "archaic institution". Some of the rf seem very nice like the Gloucesters, Sophie and old Duke of Kent but we were invaded in 1066 and the rf is self declared. They are over privileged and some are entitled. Andy swore at some workers doing their job the other day, it was in several papers. Why would he swear at people doing their work?

Anniebach Sat 16-Aug-25 13:32:02

Anne, William, Catherine, Sophie, Edward, The Gloucesters
Duke of Kent are working members, the press choose to cover
the others I assume the public want to read of them .
Charities want them as patrons and it brings money in.
I am fed up of seeing the Yorks on social media and the press,
The Yorks are hanging onto their house because he signed lease some years ago, will the book show money making schemes , The King wants them out

mabon2 Sat 16-Aug-25 13:50:32

The royal families across the ages have not been anything wonderful, why these entitled, wealthy and privileged people are put on a pedestal is beyond me.

And, of course, the King and Queen, way past retirement age but still doing their duty.

Yes, why bother with any other than the working members of the Royal Family? Just let them fade into obscurity.

Anniebach Sat 16-Aug-25 14:53:42

Agree Allira their lifestyle is put forward to mock their wealth , they can afforded private healthcare, can afford private
schools etc. in all honesty how many would truly like their lives, children’s A levels mocked, health treatment? When Catherine was so very ill the newspapers and social media were
.brutal, I still remember a post on GransNet when there were demands to know more, “I have the right to ask,and know what js wrong with her “

I agree. Throughout history various royals have behaved appallingly and yet we are still supposed to look up to them.

OK, not all of them have behaved badly but isn't that the least we should expect of the royal highnesses.

Anniebach Sat 16-Aug-25 15:29:51

Is William to be condemned for the actions of Henry 8 ?
