Reasonable charge?

I suppose it depends where you live but as this was replacing an outside tap and not installing one from scratch, it does seem rather high.

It's probably about right. The tap will have cost some of that, and there'll be a minimum call-out charge of at least £50, and possibly VAT too depending on the size of the company.

I paid £75 to have a tap replaced .
I'm supposed to have been charged mate's rates .
Instead I have a leaky new tap .

I did not ask for an estimate as this is the partner of the person who cleans for me and she offered to ask him to do it for me. I thought it was a bit steep to be honest. He has charged £18 for materials, £45 for labour and then there is VAT. BUt hey I have a tap now and he got me a lever one which is easier to use.

I think a plumber charges about £50 an hour...not counting the tap.....it's a lot of money...where we live there's a company who will do small jobs for pensioners, and don't charge unless it's over a certain amount, I had both hot and cold water taps in the kitchen and wash hand basin in the toilet replaced as they were leaking at the bottom...no charge ,I didn't even have to buy the taps,,,

I think that sounds about right. Most handymen/plumbers/electricians round here won't charge less than an hour's labour, even if the job only takes 15 or 20 minutes and the hourly rates are pretty high! Hope you enjoy your new tap!

electricians are expensive too, my livingroom light kept flickering ,I called in the electrician, he got a screwdriver and tightened something, wasn't in the house 15 minutes and charged £40, and that was a few years ago...

I think I paid 150pounds last year to replace both taps on the wash hand basin.
I supplied the taps.
So yours sounds about right.

My lovely 5 year old newbuild is just beginning to develop little faults - seal on over door has just gone.

What we tend to forget is the travel time it takes for the self-employed worker to get to us, and back again, plus any training updates they have to fund, professional body registration costs, insurance costs...
There's more to it than the 15 minutes they spend in our property!

I m lucky my grandsons two friends are plumbers so I get cheaper deals thank goodness

Someone has just replaced my outside tap. Took all of 15 minutes plus new tap. £75.60 he has charged .... does that sound OK? I'll will pay it.... but just wondering.

These days I am just so grateful for competent local tradesmen that I just pay and am glad I can. Just because the job only took half an hour you are paying for expertise, the right tools and the tap itself - enjoy it!
