What sort of people do you avoid?

I saw this thread on Twitter and it got me thinking. I suppose that I tend to avoid loud people. That's just an instinctive reaction. I'm sure there are other more subtle reasons though.

Anyone loud.

Men when out at night, and pretty soon it won’t need to be night when it becomes dark.

It sometimes takes me a while to realise that any conversation is going to be strictly one way ie the other person is only looking for an audience.

I don’t think I avoid anyone really, but sometimes my heart does sink when a somebody says ‘oh you’ll like him/ her they’re a real character’ 😬

Smart arses who are also very negative. Not many people, though. Most who have reached my age have learnt to get on with people and be warm and friendly. I can only think of one person who I avoid. She is awful and I don’t think I am alone in avoiding her.

I meet a lot of people on my walks and there's one or two I try to avoid as they let their dogs jump up on me.
I have an arthritic hip that could be unstable so if I can I go another way.

Why?
They’re not all muggers and rapists.confused

LizzieDrip Sat 30-Aug-25 12:37:10

Loud mouthed, opinionated racists and bigots.

Jaxjacky Sat 30-Aug-25 12:40:46

I don’t really avoid anyone, there are people who I know can be ‘tricky’ but it’s not difficult to mitigate their behaviour.

Mt61 Sat 30-Aug-25 12:45:45

Yes loud mouths & drunks for sure.

keepingquiet Sat 30-Aug-25 12:50:54

People who just want to point out the failings of others- judgemental people who love to slag others off.

Shallow people who just put on fakery and think you can't see through it.

Idiots who don't know what they are talking about.

Racists.

westendgirl Sat 30-Aug-25 12:55:07

I agree with you Lizzie Drip. I cannot stand self opinionated bigots, know it alls who think they are always right and who never have time for anyone else.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Sat 30-Aug-25 13:00:50

I try to find the good in most. Some people are more challenging it’s true so I then tend to engage less, make less eye contact and where possible let others interact with the ‘tricky’ one(s).

Having worked all my career in the NHS patient facing. You learn to cope and handle all types. It becomes almost instinctive whom you would like, and those who you can't be bothered with.

dragonfly46 Sat 30-Aug-25 13:09:27

I don't avoid anyone although I do keep quiet when in the company of some.

Skydancer Sat 30-Aug-25 13:11:53

People with unruly dogs.
People who continually talk about their perfect families.
Moaners.
Scruffy people.
Show-offs.

BlueBelle Sat 30-Aug-25 13:13:27

Racists
….and just recently it means avoiding people I never knew were racist they are really coming out the woodwork now

Desdemona Sat 30-Aug-25 13:22:54

Fakes. The kind of people who slag others off. You know they will do it to you behind your back.

ClicketyClick Sat 30-Aug-25 13:26:40

Of course they aren’t Rosie and am not talking about in general.
But if I am walking down a poorly lit street in the dark, there is no one else around, and there is a man walking behind me I will cross the road and quicken my pace.
Is not something I want to do and is probably not necessary but is a gut instinct that I have had since a young woman.
Might be alone with this but would be surprised if I am.

Of course you’re not alone in this. Any woman feels slightly nervous on her own in the dark and I defy anyone to say they don’t.

Evangelicals who just can't believe I really don't care what they believe.

Judy54 Sat 30-Aug-25 14:02:29

People who are judgemental and feel that they know what is right for you and how you should live your life. My view is get your own life in order first before judging mine.
