A September Challenge

In the back to school spirit, are you planning a new September challenge?

I’ve set myself two, one is to study Art Deco design, particularly jewellery design, I’m looking to sign up to online courses, as I can’t find any taught ones, and I’ve put some book requests in at the library. .

The other is to start wearing all my earrings, a different pair every day - and get rid of the ones I don’t like now. I must have over 50 pairs as I don’t think I’ve ever got rid of any since I had my ears pierced when I was 18.

Are you planning anything, or is it just me who still gets that new term, must do something different feeling, 50 years after leaving school?

Patsy70 Sun 31-Aug-25 20:32:31

I haven’t got enough earrings to worry about, must work on it! Need to find a local class for Spanish Conversation, along with my Duolingo lessons. I must be more proactive, as spending too much time on my iPad, researching stuff. I’d also like to volunteer more.

What an intriguing thread Casdon!

I’ve signed up for a second Glass Fusion class later in September and have bought a small cross stitch project to embrace this winter, a new craft for me.

Regarding earrings, I don’t have a huge selection but do give them a regular outing depending on the outfit.

Definitely think September/new school year has a boosting effect!

I AM going to tidy my allotment shed and take all the unwanted junk to the tip.

Now the heat has gone I really must get back to my daily walks; I have got very lazy over the Summer.

I start a Tai Chi class on Wednesday for the first time.

Meant to say that September has always been a time for a new adventure as both my parents were teachers and so was I. I am enjoying the ‘back to school’ feeling but with added joy as I don’t actually have to do it now I have retired - marvellous!

Going through stuff yesterday I see I have 7 watches. I like them all but usually only wear 2 of them regularly.

So … Starting tomorrow I plan a different watch each day.

I've got several but only wear one!
Why?
I also have several pairs of earrings (well many!) And tend to wear a favourite pair which are easy to get in and feel secure.

Yes, it's the start of the new school year!
We have decorators coming this week, so that's the first challenge.
Time to seek out a new group to join, perhaps in U3A.
Put together all the family history assembled over years.

I want to work on my family history too over the winter. I have so much irrelevant information that needs to be culled.

Allira Sun 31-Aug-25 22:03:01

Mine needs to be put into some format which will be interesting and understandable to other family members.

Get fitter.

Already contacted the leisure centre about pilates classes and possible swimming.

I feel that if I dont get fitter, something is going to break.
And that wont be pretty.

Well like others I was a lecturer and before that a teacher so am definitely in that start of the year mode. But if you have been reading my posts you will know that at the moment the main thing is to get the rest of this flipping dresser sorted. and stop looking like the bag lady. Apart from going for some fuel, I have been sorting things all day. I would rather have been digging the garden or whatever, this is not a very satisfying job, and I have got slower and slower as the day has gone on. Cant do any more, and in the morning must at least do a bit of ironing before carrying on with the sorting.

Once I have sorted the contents I will be finding out who would like to have it , but that is a one off. I am hoping that the doctor will soon tell me that I can go swimming again. It has been a while since I have been able to regularly swimming, and I have definitely noticed the difference as I havent been able to exercise and swimming and doing things in the pool is less painful for me. So I am planning to get back to swimming every week. It will not only give me more exercise but will also structure my week more. So I find that I actually get more things done when I need to get jobs done so that I can do other things. I also must do something about my garden. Have hoped for so long that I would improve enough to do things myself but now reluctantly feel that I must get someone in to plant things but where I want and at my request. Dont need anyone telling me what or where to put things. Just need some brute strength to get things where I want them. So they are going to be my two starters for tomorrow and to carry on with the sorting and still looking for my key to the yellow peril. So may have to find the manual and contact the manufacturers and see if I can get a new one from them. It is my sons birthday on the 8th so september has always been quite a special month for me so fingers crossed I can get started!

Haven’t we all! I know I must get out for walks, having used the summer heat as an excuse and would far rather be sitting at my laptop. I am diabetic and have been told to walk after meals. I really must get a grip!

My dance group starts up again after the summer this evening, and the book club on Wednesday.

I have a project to finish before the last Sunday of September for a do at the local museum.

And I suppose it is time to start readying the garden for the winter,

Vintagegirl Mon 01-Sept-25 14:38:18

I have become bad insomniac and one thing I must try and do is get out into open air/daylight early in the day. It is one tip I need to try and exercise early another bonus. It is very easy to potter about house, checking posts, doing few chores and day passes.

Signed up for Beginners Italian, again! Sicily beckons in October so I want to be able to order food, wine, catch the right train and fine my apartment 🤪😂

I always get the New Year feeling in September, though my ACs are long finished school and college. This year is all about boring health and fitness issues so I decided swimming would be the easiest on my aching joints. So 1sr Sept today, off I went to local pool and gym and signed up for off peak hours as I’d like to get 20 mins to start with, in the early part of the day, three times a week. An easy target I hear you say but we’ll see how long I keep it up! Paying monthly should hopefully motivate me!

Romola Mon 01-Sept-25 16:05:42

Patsy70 I'm going to try and sign up for Spanish too. I've been doing Duolingo for about 18 months and I need more real instruction.
And I suppose I'd better have a look at the income tax stuff sadhmmblushshock

To keep going to the gym to keep my aches and pains at bay - I started about a month ago and I think that it is helping.

Witzend

I shall probably set myself the same Autumn challenge as last year - go through every drawer and cupboard in the house and sort/chuck out most of it.
(I did about two.)

Yes I am hoping to go through my kitchen cupboards too, I think I have done two small ones but definitely need to go through the others, it is on the "to do" list .

What do you do at the gym please?

Never been. It all looks far too itimidating for me.

Romola I've just had a French lesson from Jumpspeak. I've been using Duolingo but it was lovely to speak to a human being, even though it was online.

Yep! the sheets are all over the spare bed, with the contents of the spare wardrobe. I have actually put 2 things out for the charity shop so far

To lose the 6 pounds I put on

we have French Scolaire Agendas starting from today!! so it really does feel new year ish

I started the ‘year’ with cleaning out and renewing filters etc., the little jobs I put off, no idea why, ie., washing machine filter which required me to lie flt on the floor then struggled to get up, powder dispenser out and in the dishwasher along with wter filter jug and salad drawer from fridge, dishwasher filter and blades washed in the sink with soda, soaked toothbrush heads in Milton and shower head in bleach, tumble dryer big filters vacced out - no fires here - new water filter now in place, glass kettle soaked in Steradent tablet, as recommended by nice gentleman in JL, dragged boxes and bags out from under the sink and had a good clean and tidy up, found 4 unopened packs of Marigolds ?! how does this happen? its now tidy and accessible.
I felt so virtuous until I was informed that I was turning into my mother. I ignored this.

Tomorrow I will be too tired to move
