And they will keep on coming. Shabana Mahmood has her work cut out.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Sun 07-Sept-25 16:09:44

If we (UK) got a grip and made coming here ‘less enticing’ escaped it would be a win for France as well as the UK. No more gatherings of migrants at Calais for a start. There’d be no point.

Whitewavemark2 Sun 07-Sept-25 16:15:49

Perhaps you could quote a post defending the male immigrants.

The majority of young men are Afghans fleeing from the Taliban. Many of them worked with our troops helping to protect them. The come to the U.K. because of their connection with our troops, the fact that they speak English and of course possible family connections.

The U.K. receives far fewer applications for asylum than France or Germany. We are not being overrun - we are just being told we are.

One real issue is that asylum seekers are not allowed to work whilst they are waiting for their application to be processed, so of course it means that the government has to oversee their welfare, from housing to feeding to education to safety.

When I said that the post was toxic, I later qualified it by suggesting that the day after day week after week of drip feed of moral panic contributes to the toxic atmosphere we find ourselves in.

Migration isn’t the panic, but fear mongering is. The more angry people get about migrants, the more clicks and shares these+posts get.

But it doesn’t mean that it is the full picture or even the correct one.

What we must realise is that SM rewards outrage. The more angrier a headline makes people the more clicks it gets.

But that does not mean it is true.

But what the SM and MSM and some politicians have learned that even if the headline is proven entirely untrue that it will “stick” with those people way down the rabbit hole of moral panic.

The latest pearl is Trumps “black children are natural killers”

Outrageous lie of course, but it will stick with sufficient people for it to become a meme that will get sufficient traction to add to the already toxicity in the hall of division and hate.

Oh that reply was to woodenspoon btw

I’m astonished at how many posters have sent supportive p.ms to me today on this topic. People who agree with many of us on here apparently!

More power to your elbow FGT…😉
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I understand why some people would send private messages, but I want to support you and to be seen to support your views.. As do quite a few of us, actually…🙂

We are discussing the UK, not the USA.

Why on earth bring Trump into this discussion?
You have your opinion to which you’re obviously entitled as I am and others are to theirs without being labelled as far right et cetera..
Genuine concern for people who are entering our country with no papers no idea who they are and what their intentions are does not make me a racist..

Iam64 Sun 07-Sept-25 16:28:28

It’s becoming increasingly difficult to discuss this very difficult issue in a less inflammatory way. I’m probably a ‘usual suspect’ despite so far as I’m aware never having posted I’m unconcerned about the kind of mass migration all of Europe now faces
Of course no country can continue to take in thousands arriving in 24 hours.
Of course the criminal gangs need smashing. Good luck with that one European leaders. It’s like the drug trade, so lucrative and so hard to attack

Successive governments here and in other European countries continue to seek solutions. Meanwhile wars and climate change mean numbers will grow not reduce

I loathe Farage, don’t trust snake oil salesmen but he’s singing a tune that appeals to many.

How do you know this?

And agree, this thread is about the UK not what Trump has said.
Talk about him somewhere else.

Maremia Sun 07-Sept-25 16:31:41

Such a relief, only two GNs were taken in by that report. Or was it that only two had time to express their reaction, before it was debunked? wink

Maremia Sun 07-Sept-25 16:33:40

Because it has been stated on MSM that many of the Afghan co-workers were left behind.

Allira Sun 07-Sept-25 16:34:01

escaped

^I dislike the implication that I must automatically dislike or resent all immigrants, or that I’m unaware of the benefits brought by those coming here legally^.
Me too. But a good 60%+ of GNs on these threads are looked upon as a homogenous group requiring diversity training! Simply because they don't agree with other posters' views.
I think the objections to asylum seekers raised on here come from many interesting angles, and to say so many GNs believe everything that is spouted is wrong.

I dislike the implication that I must automatically dislike or resent all immigrants, or that I’m unaware of the benefits brought by those coming here legally.

Hear hear. So do I.
So many of us rely on immigrants and are grateful to them. Many of have immigrants or descendants of immigrants and refugees as family members and many friends.

So yes, implying that anyone who has reservations and concerns about the numbers of mainly young men coming here illegally, concerns about children and women being trafficked here, the implications for Organised Crime, therefore automatically dislikes or even is fearful of immigrants is just plain wrong.

It's a knee-jerk reaction rather than a conclusion which is properly thought through.

Mollygo Sun 07-Sept-25 16:35:23

Dragging Trump into the argument is like the arrival of matching current events with Hitler. It’s becoming a common poster tactic. (And no, I don’t defend Trump’s actions or those of Hitler)

FGT2 posted about the number of people arriving in boats, and received all sorts of negative posts.

Why, not report it if that number of people are arriving by boat?
woodenspoon posted some really good questions about the numbers.

Are all the sources we can access wrong, or is there a someone in charge of deciding which source is acceptable.

We are expected to accept comments saying or implying

The majority of young men are fleeing the Taliban . . .
or
They have destroyed their identification . . .
or
The day after day feed . . .
or
Only posting one side of the picture . . .

We had endless daily posts about Tory misdeeds, or what the LP has done today, even made by people currently posting on N&P.
Are we now being told it was wrong to do that?

Maremia Sun 07-Sept-25 16:38:32

With so many clever folk on here (no, I am not being sarcastic, there is a wealth of exprience) how do we stop the boats in a legal and humane way?

westendgirl Sun 07-Sept-25 16:39:38

It seems that posters are just going around in circles.

SueinEspana Sun 07-Sept-25 16:41:14

Sorry, but you're wrong FriedGreenTomatoes2. These arrivals are not 'irregular' immigrants, they are ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS, not fleeing war torn countries (no war in France). Just coming to soft touch UK for housing & benefits, courtesy of the British taxpayer!

Maremia Sun 07-Sept-25 16:41:31

May I quote the well known comment?
'People who ignore history are doomed to repeat it.'
Hitler is brought up, on this and other threads, because some GNs can see a pattern emerging, which is similar to the events in the 1930's.

Maremia Sun 07-Sept-25 16:44:54

Sorry SueinEspana, those people are asylum seekers until their asylum plea is accepted or rejected.
If rejected, that is when they become illegal immigrants.
Hope this helps.

Whitewavemark2 Sun 07-Sept-25 16:50:20

Oh dear

The Trump meme was merely an example of the way toxic debate grows and influences.

How about meme /tropes we find in the U.K.?

Danger to our women is one which echoes many used in the past line “the Irish brute” or the US south’s “black rapist”
swarm/invasion
Stealing your jobs
cultural replacement
criminality
Living in luxury

They work because they play on powerful emotional reactions like fear, disgust and unfairness, by stripping immigrants of their humanity and individuality.

They are short and just right for spreading on SM

No, not the majority - that is not how percentages work.

About 19% were known to be individuals from Afghanistan in 2024.
19% might be the largest percentage out of all nationalities but that does not constitute a majority.
Some, not all, are in danger because they helped British forces or were soldiers themselves, fighting the Taliban.

In fact, Pakistani nationals are now the most numerous seeking asylum here, and Iranian people too.

Iam64 Sun 07-Sept-25 17:04:27

True Allira, I’m puzzled as to why people from Pakistan need to seek sanctuary here. Especially as in northern former mill towns large extended families with Pakistani heritage are well established so often relatives join

Okay.
I won’t mention the huge numbers anymore. You all must think it’s acceptable, not worth mentioning - and that we can afford accommodation, 3 meals a day, clothes, a doctor and dentist on tap plus extras for all who wish to arrive.

I’m in the minority on here then, which I shall now accept. Not a peep from me going forward concerning this topic. 🤷‍♀️

You're not in the minority. My impression is that maybe it's about 50/50 on here re this.

I've just seen a table on Facebook about how much in debt each country is per citizen. Wow...just wow at Ireland's £600,000 plus per person (and yep they seem to be the worst affected by all this going on - as a friend of mine living in southern Ireland would confirm).

Can't recall whether it was down as "Britain" or "England" that has a debt of around £150,000 per person (in other words about the price of a basic house each). That's already - so just how many more people want to dip into "our" pockets that haven't paid into "our" bank account so to say? If there are some magic money trees in the country then I'm sure many of us would like to know just where they are - as the trees growing in my own garden are fruit trees and not "money trees". I admit to being gobsmacked at waltzing into someone else's country and holding your hand out going "Gimme"...when you've not paid in to take out.

As my father used to put it when I was growing up "Whilst you're a child I'm paying in for you - with taxes/National Insurance etc that I pay. When you grow up you will be paying for yourself from taxes/National Insurance on what you earn - it will be your responsibility to put in...because you will be taking out".

Casdon Sun 07-Sept-25 17:27:21

I don’t believe that is the case Mt61. Groundhog Day posts never generate the same level of debate as those about new topics.

spottybook Sun 07-Sept-25 17:30:12

I doubt whether I would be allowed entry to another country having destroyed my passport and any other identification, being housed in a decent hotel, given three square meals a day, pocket money and access to a GP and dentist. No wonder they arrive here by the boatload as we are such a soft touch.
