Clothes attracting stains.

Do you have any clothes that seem to attract food spills and other stains?

I have recently bought 3 sweatshirts from Landsend. They are lovely to wear at this time of the year - but I can only wear them once before I spill something (usually food blush) or mark them with something else.

It doesn't happen with other tops

Yes the same thing happens to me. It’s annoying.

That's weird. Do you mean the LA clothes don't wash out the stains or just seem to get splattered more?
My current problem is with Boden clothes attracting holes. They're good quality, but holes appear in jeans, and holes in T Shirt cuffs and lower fronts. Definitely not moths.

I must be losing the plot! I read the title as statins and was intrigued to know which clothes would attract that much-discussed drug! Duh!🙄

Maybe the new sweatshirt issue is to do with your arms being restricted a bit, and missing your mouth when you eat!?!
A bib might be needed just for the Lands End tops. 😆

Oh yes*Kittylester*, I have some navy trousers that I really like but can only wear once before washing. None of my other dark trousers give me the same problem so it isn’t just the dark colour showing marks up.

😆 Well, maybe statins would serve to unblock any stains.

I fear it is 'Sod's Law' operating at full steam. Following the birth of my youngest child I lost weight rapidly and, pleased with my back to normal shape, bought a beautiful and expensive cream dress. Without fail, the baby was sick, the dog leapt up and deposited paw prints, or I spilled something on this perfect garment, often before I had left the house. Within months I had managed to get a tomato stain on the front from a pasta meal and that was it - ruined.

Turmeric or pasta sauce are my demons when it comes to stains, I often cook with turmeric and don’t wear an apron - stupid I know but I always feel happier without wearing one - and of course some turmeric powder wafts in a little cloud of pure yellow stain onto my clothes. And when eating pasta I should wear a bib, is the only way.

I am a “dropper”, I have been known to wear a white shirt for an hour or less before I spill on it.

A few years ago I wore a white summer dress for our open garden it was 80 degrees, we served about a hundred cream teas, to my amazement not a single mark, I wore it for the same event the following Sunday again spotless..

It was packed for a holiday to Portugal, I put it on to go down to breakfast and by the time I had finished eating it looked like a Jackson Pollock painting.

I have a striped, blue, cotton shirt and whenever I wear it all sorts of mysterious stains appear. They’re not from dropped food, but on sleeves, the side, the top pocket and the back.
Fortunately, a bit of neat washing liquid does the trick.

If we are on our own I wear an apron to eat as well as cook!

kittylester Mon 08-Sept-25 09:48:21

But it doesn't happen on other clothes - why?

It's not as though I wear the tops often - they are always in the wash!!

One of life’s mysteries in order to keep us on our toes!

I'm another one who always manages to drop stuff down myself - especially when I'm wearing something light-coloured. Good job I usually stick to dark colours!

I cannot wear anything white! Dirt would jump up and hit me even if I stood still. I am happy in my indigo jeans and coloured tops. For eating anything messy like spaghetti I wear a napkin clipped to a chain round my neck. The trouble is the food then drops into my lap so I have another napkin there. I live alone so nobody sees!

Oh! I'm glad I'm not alone in using a tea-towel as a sort-of bib.

It is a generally and universally accepted fact that any white, cream or pale top will automatically attract tomato based sauce eg bolognese, from any distance up to 5 miles.
The same law applies to silk or cashmere and oil whether vinaigrette or splashes from the frying pan.

I bought this T-shirt for my husband. It is very apt!

cornergran Mon 08-Sept-25 13:31:30

I’ve a striped top on today. Four quite bright, forgiving colours with white between. Just had lunch. Guess which colour the excess food landed on? grin.

Georgesgran Mon 08-Sept-25 13:40:13

Dippy egg down a black T-shirt curtailed my Saturday outing, it looked like a long greasy stain down my boob - I really should carry a spare top out with me.

grannyqueenie Mon 08-Sept-25 14:33:02

Yes!!!! I thought it was only me!! I always have a couple of “fated” garments on the go, every blinking time I wear them something gets splattered on them! 🤦‍♀️

Greyduster Mon 08-Sept-25 14:59:27

I really should wear a hazmat suit when I am cooking or eating curry. Even if I wear an apron, I’ll get a tiny spot or a stain on a sleeve or somewhere but never on the apron! GS cooked and ate a curry here last week and never got a spot on him. Maybe it’s an age thing! I have three of GS’s original Mothercare muslin squares and I still use one when I’m eating spaghetti bolognese, but not in company😁!

I often think that I need a bib when I eat. it is very hard for me to remain pristine plus of course a big smattering of doggy glitter (Hair!)
