I was just about to write the same but in deciding to read a few comments I found that you'd beaten me to it.
I've just watched a John Lewis advertisement and don't have the slightest idea of what message they were trying to get across. Totally baffled They'll be next. Pfffst. Gone.
(For a few years now all their ads have featured interracial couples, which is baffling as less than 8% of UK. partnerships are interracial. Well, that's apart from the few that ALSO featured homosexual couples. What on earth is going on? Surely they should be trying to sell to the 80% of the population who are white and straight? They're digging a hole that will ruin them)
And before any Guardian readers lambast me - one of my sons has been married for 12-years to a superb clever pretty Asian girl and have given us two beautiful grandsons. And two of my nieces are gay and in relationships All wonderful. But not indicative of the majority of the UK's population .
Target followed the Orange one and stopped their DEI program. they are struggling now. Costco decided to continue and are dong really well. In the USA.
FGT yes I read your thread but wanted to emphasise my point ! See your sarcasm is always there isn’t it ? End of me contributing any further to discussions! I shall just read and smile inwardly from now on! Others have left this forum as well and I am not surprised tbh! Hey ho!
The Guardian used to be The Manchester Guadian. Which is where I live. Fond memories of that newspaper. Better by far than its derivative. Although I do like Marina Hyde she makes me laugh and is very scathing.
I remember when it was The Manchester Guardian, FGT2! Goodness, that's a blast from the past. I also remember when the Guardian published highly confidential defence documents passed to them by a Home Office clerical worker, who was imprisoned for the offence.
I remember when I was very young hearing the comment 'People buy the newspaper they want to read'. I think there is an element of truth in that. I read a few newspapers and they are all biased to some degree. I have the Press reader app, where you can read any newspaper in the format of a print newspaper. So no pop up ads, no begging for subscriptions from individual papers.

If anyone has left this forum it sure ain’t anything to do with FGT
I think all newspapers are suffering, because people do not actually buy a print paper any more, but they still need a broad breadth of reporting, which is then plagiarised by the morning TV programmes and the internet for free.
DH loves the Mirror (sigh), because of the sports reporting, but they do offer after offer to get more readers; and less and less news, with more magazine type areticles.
I think you could be right Siptree. My values chime with the Telegraph which is why I subscribe I suppose. If I read (say) the Guardian I find myself saying “oh come on! Really?” 🤷♀️
Where I live there used to be four newsagents within a mile of each other, two of which did deliveries, now there's only the Spar left that sells papers and deliveries stopped in the noughties. I hardly ever buy papers now and consume my news online, like so many others. Mind you, the newspapers have become wise to this and some have become subscription only,

I do think we need our views challenged sometimes, though!
Which is why I am on Gransnet too and read other points of view - like yours, FGT2.
Heaven forbid we should all become nodding dogs. Although I do love Bob Mortimer - Oh yes 😁

The daily papers used to be delivered too.
One of my uncles had a thriving little newsagent's shop in the 1960s, it was constantly busy.
