Unfinished tasks…

Is anybody else prone to this?
For instance, no GN first thing so I started to read my Kindle book, that made me feel like a coffee so I went downstairs to make it, saw the washing machine had finished the overnight wash, hung it out as it looks like being a lovely day, saw the QVC parcel on the table which had arrived yesterday but I hadn’t opened, so I opened it, tried it on, decided it was too big and did it up again, to send back later, by this time the coffee was cold so I made another, as I was getting the milk out of the fridge I remembered I needed to take dog food out of the freezer, opening the drawers I decided it all needed a bit of a sort out/tidy up so I rearranged a few things, then the post arrived so I opened that and took the unwanted catalogues etc out to the recycling bin in the garage, reheated the milk for my coffee and brought it upstairs by which time GN was back, so I abandoned my book…etc etc etc and here I am a total of 1 1/2 hours later having achieved next to nothing
I can’t believe I am alone in being so easily distracted - am I?

Sounds like the days I have. If I want to do something reasonably important I have to get up and set to, straight away.
Today after coffee, I tackled the hedge on one side of the courtyard. Having moved the pots, I’m now sorting them into their winter positions, clearing and weeding.
Just popped inside for a cup of tea and a look at GN! Back off out now, bye.

No you are not alone. I am a flitter going from one thing to another and leaving things half done. I left the vacuum cleaner in the bedroom when I heard the phone ping with a message. It's still there after sending other messages and answering emails.

I disagree. You have:

•Hung out the washing
•Wrapped a online purchase to return
•Made sure the dog has food
•Organised the freezer
•Opened the post
•Dealt with the recycling

Aren’t they all finished tasks, things you would have had to do sooner or later and have now done?

Aveline Tue 30-Sept-25 12:01:04

I feel tired just reading all the things you've done!

Mollygo Tue 30-Sept-25 12:53:07

You’re not alone. I often do that, but as PG says above, you’ve achieved a lot, even if it wasn’t your original task.
I started cleaning the bathroom today, then thought I ought to put the towels on. While I was by the washer, I thought the sink needed a wipe over so I moved stuff onto the windowsill, which then needed a wipe too.
Went to collect DH from his appointment, and I took the dog so we could give her a run before we got back.
So now we’re back. I’ve hung out the towels and I’m making lunch.
Bathroom still waiting!

That sounds like a busy morning! 😁

Allira Tue 30-Sept-25 12:59:14

Ps I've only just had my 11 am coffee!
Now it's lunch-time.

merlotgran Tue 30-Sept-25 13:11:12

Sounds like a typical day chez merlot.

The only thing I’ve actually finished is my lunch!

I've ADD, distraction has always been with me. But as I've gotten older the easier focus has become. I talk to myself, remind myself, have cues.

It would seem you actually have accomplished much, be kind to yourself.

RosieandherMaw Tue 30-Sept-25 14:33:36

I rarely feel I’ve completed anything . I sort of blame lockdown when endless days of isolation, no deadlines, nothing to do stretched in front of me and I could happily put things off for the next day or the next again.
Getting better at starting but the self- discipline not to get distracted is conspicuous by its absence!

I’m a stickler,I never do the nice things until the drudgery is out of the way.

Same here. The nice things are the garden or sewing something, anything 🥰

Me! I’m great at starting stuff and appalling at finishing them!

I break off halfway through, have a cuppa, read a book or bit of TV then often don’t go back to the original task for days on end!

GrannyIvy Tue 30-Sept-25 20:37:13

I smiled reading your post. I am the same these days I start something get distracted and flit from one thing to the next. Must be the 70 plus syndrome 😂 There is always tomorrow to start again. Once I was an efficient PA to a busy Consultant Cardiologist organising him and everyone in sight and now 5 years after retirement I seem to muddle along 😂 Happy days

It's the Puritan in us!

Having worked to deadlines it's good not to have to do that, apart from being on time for appointments etc.

Erica23 Wed 01-Oct-25 07:08:27

Yes that’s me too. I’m easily bored so can start cleaning the kitchen, become bored and decide to water the plants, that becomes tiring, so it’s coffee time, you get the picture.
I have to say it drives my DH crazy he doesn’t get it at all. For that reason I do finish what I’ve started the same day might be tea time by then though 🥴

RosieandherMaw I'm killing myself laughing here! I promise you, you're not the only one!

I'm not one for unfinished tasks physically, I concentrate on one thing at a time, but I'm a devil for it computer-wise!

Got several tabs open, all needing attention, so I'll go into one, get bored, make a mug of PG Tips or guzzle a load of Dr Pepper, finish that tab, read a bit, onto the next tab where I'll get bored again so will leave it as it is then go out to Spat for a bit of shopping, come back and finish that tab, watch some YouTube stuff, ....it can take me 3 hours just to reply to an email!

I must be sadly lacking the Puritan bit!

Allira Wed 01-Oct-25 10:35:27

Well, I'm sitting looking at GN, doing wordle etc and thinking that the fridges and freezers need a good sort out.

I'm not procrastinating, I'm planning in my head because I can multi-task 😁

Aveline Wed 01-Oct-25 10:40:29

Oh no. I'm looking at GN but now realise I haven't done today's Wordle!

Beware leaving washing machine or dishwasher on overnight. My son;s friend left his washing machine on, woke up to the house on fire due to electrical fault on machine. Lesson learned!

If i ever get to having a drink while still hot its a miracle. i just went to do the washing up. whilst there i cleaned the sink and drainer before starting then washed up. decided to clean the microwave out then wiped the door frame and light switch down as i had noticed a small mark on it. now getting breath back before i hoover

polnan Wed 01-Oct-25 18:25:08

I often make a coffee and forget to drink it, when I discover it, I pop it in the microwave to reheat!
