Hesitant about posting?

Does anyone else feel hesitant about starting a lighthearted or amusing thread because of the difficult and sad times some of our members are going through?
This morning I got myself in a real pickle, frustrating, potentially embarrassing and thought others might find it funny but then it seemed so trivial and I didn’t post it.
Is it in our nature to shield others or is it a case of life goes on and we must enjoy those moments and share them?

At my mum’s burial ( over 20 years ago) her coffin got stuck and the sexton had to be fetched to widen the grave.
‘ How Mum/ Granny would have laughed’ someone said, and we all agreed. It helped at a difficult moment.
Don’t be afraid of a light-hearted thread,

I wasn’t in the least bit bothered about someone taking offence.
I just didn’t want to seem uncaring when someone is going through a difficult or painful time.
There is a huge difference.

No, I think it’s always important to have some trivia.

Absolutely agree.

My daft thread about my noisy jacket developed legs and we all had a laugh but you never know. I hesitated to post it originally as I thought it was just too trivial.

Usedtobeblonde Thu 16-Oct-25 17:40:12

I certainly laughed at your thread Aveline so thank you for starting it.
I shall not be so hesitant again.

We need MissAdventure back. Her posts used to have me crying with laughter.

I do hope she is recovering from her illness.

I want to hear about the right pickle you got into this morning Usedtobeblonde.

Sending best wishes, MissAdventure, if you're reading this thread.

We need you back 🤗

I'm all for a bit of laughter.

The whole year has been pretty awful in our family, and the past few weeks particularly so, but amidst all the stress, anxiety and uncertainty, something happened a few days ago, and in the most unexpected setting, that still has me chuckling when I think of it, and right now, that is very welcome though some posters might see it as inappropriate if I were to share it.

Well, the funniest thing I heard this week is when a neighbour told me that he had the covid jab last week and thankfully he had no special effects.
🤣

Well here goes and now it is not so funny at all.
I am trying to declutter and one wardrobe is stacked with storage boxes , I really don’t know what is in them but know one has throws which I thought might be needed soon.
Consider I am 88. 5ft tall and “very well covered”.
I reached for the top box, found it was much too heavy and too high.
Toppled gracefully backwards and twisted slightly getting wedged between the wardrobe and the dressing table, both fitted so of course they didn’t move.
Nothing really hurt but my dignity because I couldn’t move it seemed.
I was doomed to wait for someone to come home from work when I would really be in trouble for being so stupid.
After a short recovery I assessed the situation and slowly, very slowly, I bum shuffled inches at a time until I was free of both pieces of furniture.
I then had to turn over onto my knees until I could reach the bed to lever myself up.
Just thankful no one was in and I still haven’t told anyone.
A couple of years ago I fell trying to reach into the back of a low unit cupboard and pulled the door off.
I haven’t lived that down yet.
As I said probably not funny but now you know.

More a pickle than amusing.

I enjoy a bit of humour and have always been able to laugh during the saddest times of my life.
Some one earlier mentioned a coffin getting stuck. Here's my amusing funeral story. The church grave yard was at the top of a hill. My father in law was about to be buried. It was an extremely windy day. The wind got under the vicar's robes and blew him over. Over and over he rolled. Everyone held their breath as they tried not to laugh. Then someone caught sight of my mother in law, shaking with laughter and everyone joined in. grin

Humour can always lighten an awful situation. At my mum’s funeral, we were all standing at the graveside when a really noisy train went rattling along the train line a couple of miles across the way. It was a very still day and the poor minister couldn’t make herself heard over the noise. She had to stop talking until it had gone by. We said we thought mum/granny must have arranged that to give us all a good laugh at such a sad moment. It would have been just like her sense of humour. smile

I now have an image of a turtle on its back legs waving in the air 🐢

Sorry

I love a bit of trivia, but at the moment I’m noticing a lot of light-hearted posts are jumped on and criticized by a few (but vocal) GNs - or is that just my perception?

I agree and I think it is a shame. Sometimes people take things far too seriously.

rafichagran Thu 16-Oct-25 20:02:06

Carry on with the trivia. Don't worry about the vocal mean people, just because they don't like it, does not mean you have to stop.

Toppled gracefully - reminds me of the time I topped gracefully ( well more like slid) into one of the chest freezers in Iceland. I stupidly thought that as a 5 footer I'd be able to reach that last leg of lamb in the freezer. So I ended up virtually doing a near hand stand in the freezer to stop me falling completely in and the lid then closing. Always found it amusing hearing the TV and - Shudda gone to Iceland.
