Good morning Mick and all GN's on a dark still morning where I can just now see the outline of the tree but nothing else in North Yorkshire. Back at home, and slowly returning to routine, but now it is lights and heating and dressing gowns needed to even start the morning.
I am rather struggling getting going this morning, as usual aches and pains but knees have decided to take centre stage for hurting. Well I did make quite an effort yesterday, and got some shopping and did the washing and sorted things from coming home, so they did have to do quite a lot of bending etc., but am pleased with the start I have made. Now waiting for a bit more daylight to get the washing on the line asap. We are promised a lot of rain a bit later, and I am going out to lunch so want to at least give them a bit of a blow first, even if they have to come in and go on the clothes horse to dry properly.
I will have to take things steadily this morning, so it will be a case of doing a job and then sitting down and reading a bit of the paper and then more of the same. Rather a frustrating way to go on, as I was the kind of person who preferred to do one job and get it finished and ticked off, but have at last learned that I get less done by doing that if I make my back worse etc, so it is a two way job these days. In parallel I have a sitting down job and a standing job, and have learnt the signs as to when I need to swap over. Ah well we live and learn dont we. Today I have lunch to look forward to, and it will provide a clear plan for the day, so it is going to be what I can do beforehand, then making an effort to look reasonably tidy and off to Thirsk for lunch with Sue and her husband. Shall probably have a look round the sunday market at thirsk as well while I am there and then home to catch up with a few more jobs. This is just physically, mentally I do feel rested and I enjoy the wonderful autumn colours and walking in the fresh air well wrapped up. I have a variety of coats and jackets, from a simple fleece to my heavyweight very warm and rainproof jacket from TOG that I bought for going to the artic, so my checking on the weather does not go 8 degrees and windy , but ah blue jacket weather, leading to black TOG weather later!! I must also check my darker days routine, with coats. I make sure that I have a little pair of thermal gloves and a hat in the pocket of each coat plus checking my little torches at the ready and new batteries in them. I think this is the time of year you can get caught out. You go in the afternoon to something and by the time you come out it has got darker and colder than you think, so I find it simpler and easier to make sure everything has something at the ready in the pockets. My other useful idea I pass on to everyone is to have a white opaque plastic shopping bag folded up in a pocket. If you do find yourself caught out or walking where there is no path or lights, if you carry this on the side nearest the cars then the carlights shine and pick it up quickly and you are visible. You also have a bag for all those bits you bought when you only intended to get a paper!!
I plan to use this calmer and rested me, to firstly go through paperwork and appointments to check up on things needing to be done, as I know I must sort my car tax out for one, and begrudgingly go for the flipping extra blood test that they forgot to do last time etc. Then the week will be mostly weather decided jobs, so if it is sunny and dry, I shall get the rest of the plants put in and have to look up and work out what to do with my Acer. It has been fine in this pot, but intended to move it up a pot size, only to find that it had managed to root through the hole in the bottom of the pot. So need to work out whether to just leave it for the winter , risk cutting through the root and moving it up a pot with all new soil, but that might encourage it to put on growth, which is not what you want coming into the winter. Anyway at last I am in garden sorting mode and will either be actually moving plants around and finally planting up my bulbs or getting out my garden planning ideas and decide what will go where next. Definitely want to get down to Harlow carr if possible this week to see all the lovely colours and get a buggy to go round before it is half term. There is no chance that I could walk round these days , but grateful that the buggys do at least allow me still to visit and enjoy the lovely colours there. On wet or miserable days, I am going to make a real effort to get this wretched dresser stuff finished, cleared away and at last get rid of the dresser by hook or by crook. At the moment I cant really see how it is going to get out of the doors, but perhaps it comes to pieces, which I will discover when everything is cleared away. Ah the great encouragement to get on with it is to think of a lovely big bookcase filled with all my books and all set out in their groups of gardening, music, art etc instead of all having to be higgledy piggledy at the moment and never where I want them to be. Well that is the thoughts and plans! No doubt I shall be distracted from such things any time there is a chance to get out and make the most of the daylight. I used to get up at this time of year and be up and out as soon as there was daylight to make the most of it. Sadly it takes me so long to get up these days that it will be nearly lunchtime before I am up to going out. Ah well see how it goes.
Well done Mick to get things organised for your digital phone stuff. You need to have all your numbers transferred these days as they are not easy ones to remember . I am old enough to remember the three letters followed by the numbers, and they stuck in your memory and were easy to bring to mind. I have a quick dial thing for my sons number, but still cannot remember it myself without checking it, and as for my own, having had to recently change it , I remember the last 5 numbers but for the life of me cannot get the first bit to stick and have to look at it written on a piece of paper in my wallet if I need to give it to someone!! GrandMattie how cheeky of them to leave the t towels for you to do. Didnt even let them dry out so as not to be so smelly. I would be defininitely having a few words that running the cafe or whatever means ALL the jobs , which includes washing tea towels. They take you for granted as it is , with all you do but I think this is taking the mickey. Perhaps you could suggest that you no longer do every cafe or baking but cut back to every other or whatever as they have shown that they do not know how to run things without you. Then you could come in and "supervise" ie go in as a customer and sit down and watch how they manage. If need be, you could suggest a rota, so that each person has a time with you to see how things are done properly, and then it could be worth having to suddenly go somewhere and not be available for your normal shift and get one of them to do it. It always sounds as though your food is lovely and if I could use a TARDIS I would transport myself down to try some, but one day you will want or need to retire from this and it would be such a shame if the lovely things you have made and done is allowed to dwindle or close. Your vicar should be seeing this and helping to spread the load. Peli, where is MS? you have probably been on here much longer than me , which is why I dont know where you are living. Would be nice to know. Reading of all the food being made has made me very hungry and so am off to put the kettle on and enjoy a sit down with the papers. There is more daylight and I can now see the tree properly and lots of golden leaves under the tree, but mostly still green on the tree. No signs of squirrels or pigeons so far but a bit more breeze now, which should be good to give my washing a blow. Hope everyone has a peaceful and happy sunday.
