Made to feel very old.

On another thread today someone was shocked when a young family member didn’t know about Star Wars.
One day this week I had an invitation from some company I deal with to enter a competition in which the prize was 2 tickets to an evening at the Albert Hall starring Cliff Richard.
As I am most certainly NOT a fan, I joked to my GD who is 27 that if I entered I was surely bound to win the prize I did not want.
She just asked “ who is Cliff Richard??”
That is when I felt very old indeed.

May I join your club?!

Allira Sat 08-Nov-25 23:24:37

Surely everyone knows who Cliff Richard is! 😲

Must ask my DGD who are younger than yours, UTBB
If they don't know, I'll have to find the film Summer Holiday somewhere and force them to watch it with me 😁

Allira Sat 08-Nov-25 23:26:14

Ps is he still performing?

Well my grandkids know who Elvis was

I well remember the Elvis/Cliff divide in my school. My best friend and I were in the Cliff group. As a fan club member my friend was invited to meet Cliff after a show. I tagged along with my friend’s mum acting as bodyguard. We were 13. I can’t recall a word of what was said, just that he was wearing something red. We came away after a few minutes with autographs. Mine is tucked away somewhere, I must ask the grandchildren if they have heard of him. I may even threaten to make them listen to him grin.

Isn’t it funny how it’s all or nothing I always thought Elvis was so fantastic if he had read out a menu I would have swooned Cliff I couldn’t stand he seemed to try to copy him be the British Elvis ( as if) and he did nothing for me at all
Over the years nothing in my head has changed AT ALL I ve never warmed to the man in any way, Adam Faith, Billy Fury yes lovely….. Cliff 🤮

Of course our grandkids wouldn’t know of them (Elvis has been dead since long before they were born and cliff is in his dotage) just like we don’t know Snoop dog or Dr Dra or whatever their names are

Babs03 Sun 09-Nov-25 06:35:32

I was never really struck by Cliff though my best friend thought he was the best thing since sliced bread. Elvis, however, is a legend 👏🏽👏🏽

Calendargirl Sun 09-Nov-25 07:39:56

I certainly have no idea of so many of today’s ‘stars’.

I don’t listen to any modern music.

My GD, 17, sings at ‘gigs’ sometimes, and I am totally ignorant of who the songs are by.

My friend took her Granddaughter 15 to Liverpool for the day they were planning what to do first.
My friend said she’s like to visit the Beatles museum. Granddaughter said she wasn’t keen on visiting a museum full of insects ! She’d no idea.

While reading with one of the school pupils recently, there was some reference in the book to The Beatles. He wanted to know who The Beatles were!!

I am old. What makes me feel old is not the younger generation being ignorant of the icons of my youth, it's seeing the obituaries of those icons!

GoodAfternoonTea Sun 09-Nov-25 08:01:56

What makes me feel old is just watching how the people who were central on TV in my youth are now passing on - Patricia Routledge, Pauline Collins, Prunella Scales. Where did the last 50 years go?

BlueBelle Sun 09-Nov-25 08:13:29

Well they wouldn’t know them would they? Why would they ? do you know the name of the latest rap artist ???

I am surprised by what my GCs don't know sometimes but I'm surprised by what they do know as well. One of my DCs, aged 10, had never heard of Marilyn Monroe but on another occasion when I mentioned Scott of the Antarctic they asked "Do you mean Robert Falcon Scott?"

Worryingly, all my GCs seemed to have known about Charlie Kirk before he was shot but I didn't.

I couldn't bear Elvis. mainly because of his greasy hair. It was only later I realised what an amazing voice he had. But I liked Cliff and his music, and his irreverent approach to himself.

Dylis Sun 09-Nov-25 08:54:25

I had the same invitation for the Cliff Richard competition! Deleted it straight away. I think the next email was about funeral planning.

ViceVersa Sun 09-Nov-25 09:10:37

I wouldn't expect my grandchildren to know who Cliff Richard is, but unlike many on here, I do keep up with today's music. I love discovering new bands and in fact, I'm going (on my own) to see a band I've recently discovered in a couple of weeks.

madeleine45 Sun 09-Nov-25 09:54:05

I couldnt stand Cliff Richards and have never followed him. It would be a punishment to me to be made to watch Summer Holidays! didnt mind some Elvis songs and recognised his good voice, but always had an eclectic taste. So many of the Beatles songs have lasted over the years, being some beautiful melodies of course too, but I used to enjoy all sorts Connie Francis, Patsy Klein , a bit of Gerry and the Pacemakers come to mind from that era too.

Calendargirl Sun 09-Nov-25 09:55:45

I had never heard of Charlie Kirk either.

🤷‍♀️

Gummie Sun 09-Nov-25 10:19:56

Why would a youngster know who Cliff Richard is? He's hardly current and hasn't been for a long time. It's rare to hear him on the radio or see him on TV and certainly not on the entertainment young people are watching or listening to.

I've no idea who a lot of the new generation stars are and that's fine.

No, but I can google it grin

Cliff Richard fans will be pleased to know he is still performing and is at the moment on tour in Australia! Which was where I first saw him - he toured when we were living there in 1990!
