Made to feel very old.

I work in a nursery and mentioned the Beatles to which a young girl said “ who’s the Beatles? I’m 65 she’s 18

I have tickets to see Barry Manilow & David Essex next year. My son said at their age you will be lucky if they are still around next year. It’s a shame when the people you grew up with get old. Obviously if I’m in my 60s they will be older.☹️

I remember listening to the Top Twenty with my Dad on the radio on Sunday nights in the fifties. I enjoyed the music that he liked. If I recall, it was on from 11.00 till midnight.

I never took to Cliff Richard or Elvis Presley - they both give me the creeps, and I never liked their music either.

As a 14-year-old, I used to swoon over Barry Manilow and Neil Diamond ... and I still do, aged 60!

Well I have just turned 70 and liked the Beatles when I was young. I can still sing along to the songs my mother used to sing to me (which I guess were popular in her day). However I got into rock music and still love it now. I have two sons who were brought up on Genesis and Fleetwood Mac, Led Zepplin, Black Sabbath etc (Any Black Sabbath Fans should check out Greta Van Fleet) My eldest son who is 43 today has an awful taste in music. My younger son however loves rock music and has introduced me to many new rock bands which I thoroughly enjoy. Five Finger Death Punch, Ghost among them. I am not saying I like all the modern rock stuff but I particularly like is a version of Sounds of Silence by 'Disturbed'. I might like to add I feel old when they use music from my youth in TV adds, particularly Donna Summers 'I feel love'. I used to dance to that in night clubs!

Can’t say I’m at all surprised. TBH if I bumped into e.g. Taylor Swift in the street I wouldn’t recognise her and couldn’t tell you the title of any of her songs.

It does please me, however, that my elder Gdcs (10 and 9) adore Queen and can (and do) sing along very lustily to Bohemian Rhapsody and e.g. We Are the Champions in the car!

I had heard Taylor Swift 's name in the pub quizzes as a singer but didn't realise it was a woman until she was in the news because of her tour recently.
When I see questions on TV quiz shows about today's music, not only don't understand the questions I am usually no nearer when I hear the answer.

When elder DD (now 47) was 10 years old she went to Canada to stay with my sister's family for a year because of problems at home. She had one of those new-fangled little casette recorders and I decided to buy her some tapes to listen to on the 'plane. I must say, I was surprised when she asked for Glenn Miller!

No BlueBelle, but I do know the names of some stars of the past, which youngsters these days don’t.
I am also open to giving today’s songs a chance, and liked a couple of them.
When I was a teenager in the 60s, the 1940s songs that my parents loved at the time were, to me, dreadful. Lily Marlene, anyone? (To compound my dislike of that song, I was named after it 😩)
I saw Cliff live once. Our local cinema had live shows. We heard Adam Faith, Gene Pitney, Helen Shapiro, Dickie Valentine, to name just a few. My parents were friendly with the cinema manager and he used to let me in free to see as many as I wanted!

I have a memory card in the car radio system with a huge selection of music from Handel to Françoise Hardy. 7 year old DGS is keen on "the clock song", by Bill Haley and the Comets. His 9 year old brother was humming the Can Can yesterday (not on the memory card).

I wonder how many of today's tunes will still be hummed by youngsters in nearly 200 years time.

I was at wedding reception way back in the 1990s and the DJ announced a Beatles record by saying "Now here's something for all you old timers." It was the first time I began to feel old.
