Can anyone recommend a board game that I might buy for my family to play this Christmas? Thank you

Children involved are teenagers plus a 10 year old who is a whizz at board games and will hold his own against the older ones.

I would buy a backgammon board. Only two players at a time, but interesting to watch and learn as well. It won't be just for Christmas. Ours was used for years and travelled all over Europe.

We play Monopoly. My 11 year old dgd can hold her own against the adults. It can be a long game but we usually set a time limit.

Quirkle.

Much enjoyed by three generations of our family; small children can easily grasp it , smart professionals can get all tactical, the elderly can still keep up :-)

the elderly can still keep up :-) - I like the sound of that bit!

Ticket to Ride is a good game I was introduced to recently. Different versions with various areas. Involves building trains and finding best routes!

Does 1% Club leave people having to drop out and twiddle their thumbs?

Following with interest.

We have Outsmarted that is another general knowledge game. It is played online, so you don't need to be together to play. The questions are set taking age into consideration.

Uno is a family favourite. We own many versions.

You don't mention the ages but our family love the board games Labyrinth, London Game, Snakes & Ladders, Cluedo, Colour Brain and for the Harry Potter fans, Diagon Alley Dash.

I have several games for the children (aged 10, 12 and 14) but the one they always ask for is Tell Me which is so simple! They absolutely love it. I have printed some more cards with subjects they like as some of the subjects may be a bit old fashioned. Just search for 'Tell Me game' in E-Bay and there are loads of them for sale.

The Europe version is best. I think.

Rummikub - not a board game but terrific fun.

NotSpaghetti Tue 11-Nov-25 15:24:49

Do they have Carcassonne?
That's good too.

NotSpaghetti Tue 11-Nov-25 15:26:11

And the old favourite Pictionary still comes out now and then.

We all love board games.

We play Game of Life and Scotland Yard (there's also a Junior Scotland Yard).

You can buy all these games on E-Bay often for a few pounds when they cost £25 new. You also get vintage versions which are sometimes nicer than the new ones.

Watching this thread! 🙂

Me too!

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Tue 11-Nov-25 16:30:44

Just got me thinking of many years ago our girls loved ‘Mysteries of Old Peking’.
Off to Google now.
That could be a ‘new’ family favourite … if it’s still made. 🤷‍♀️

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Tue 11-Nov-25 16:45:10

Crikey. Found it!
How come it’s £79? Says ‘only 2 left’.

Must be out of manufacture & these are vintage buys.
Why did I get rid!

kittylester Tue 11-Nov-25 17:03:32

Our version of Sorry disintegrated so we bought a new one. They'd changed it!!! I decided to buy a vintage one and then decided that we really didn't want to pay silly amounts for nostalgia.

Another thumbs up for backgammon. Also we enjoyed Articulate a couple of Christmases ago.
