leaflets through the door

On this freezing cold day I am trying to keep warm myself and keep the heat in my flat. I have kept curtains closed for quite a while until I really need to look out, made sure that doors are closed etc, only to find that someone has shoved leaflets in my door, which did not fall to the floor, so are there keeping the letterbox open and letting in cold air. Luckily I am only just about to go out or they could have been there all day, not only letting cold air in, but letting people know that I am out. I am extremely annoyed by this , but the person had gone before I could see them.

I have looked through the leaflets and actually send an email to 2 of the people explaining what has happened, that they should make sure that these leaflets are posted properly through the boxes as they are at the moment, not only advertising that I am not in but they will not be remembered for what they offer to do , but for the annoyance and waste of money their leaflets have caused. Whether it will make the slightest difference I have no idea, but at least it let me have a moan about it. It is bad enough in the summer but right now I am very annoyed about it. What do others do?

Put up a sign saying No leaflets, junk mail or flyers. I deliver for a political party and woe betide us if we ignore those signs or don't push leaflets all thexway through.

Yes do put up a sign, an open letterbox will let cold air in as you say. You could also try purchasing an electric over blanket, they are not too expensive and with Black Friday coming up you could snap up a bargain. My DH and I both have one, it doesn’t use much electric and means that we can be warm and toasty and dial down the heating.

no, I have a sign, no junk mail, but still I get, lots of junk mail, some even delivered by Royal Mail!!

Jojo1950 Tue 18-Nov-25 16:05:42

Royal Mail are paid to deliver the advertising mail. Or the posties are!

Yes I really agree put up a sign saying no junk mail. We keep an eye on our neighbours property when she is away and this has happened on a number of occasions. It does advertise that the occupant is probably on holiday. We normally just push it through the letterbox or pull it out whichever is the easiest. Yes also to much junk mail is also delivered by Royal Mail.

So what will happen if you ignore signs ? I'm intrigued Retroladywriting?

Simple answer, check the door a few times a day!

We have a metal post box atrached to the wall outside the front door. The leeter box opening in the front door is sealed up. This was put in place to prevent our always hungry sprocker spaniel from eating our letters, but the same thing would work for you

I too have an outdoor metal box, but all my junk mail just seems to be delivered on Mondays! (Royal Mail).

Dibbydod Tue 18-Nov-25 18:08:46

You’ve all winter in front of you so you may as well put up postbox attached to the wall first as last . Problem solved .

Royal Mail are contracted to deliver the leaflets according to a postman I spoke to, so they have no choice. But luckily my sign seems to work for just about everyone else.

I got a leaflet from the Green Party one Winter which had been holding my letterbox open all day. I few weeks later thery sent me one suggesting I get rid of my second car. (I dont have a car!)

I agree -how many times have I found a lot of leaflets rammed into the letterbox letting warm air out ?
I bought a no junk mail notice up and it was ripped down a few days later . It damaged the wood on the window sill and it had to be repainted .

The Royal mail also deliver lots of junk mail .

How inconsiderate of whoever posted the leaflets through.

I deliver flyers for a big local charity event, and take a long-handled spoon with me to shove them right through. Another benefit is that I won’t have my fingertip bitten off by a dog, as happened to another volunteer this year. shock

One thing about the “no leaflets” sign though. One local street is full of them - I think they bought a job lot. As I was walking past them all with leaflets in hand, a woman in her front garden asked what they were. She’d never heard of the event, was keen to go and was upset that it had been held for years without her knowing about it. I got the impression it was all my fault for not ignoring her sign…

You can stop mail that has no addressee here:

My windowcleaners now use a hosepipe connected to a tank with a pump to wash the windows. One member of the team puts a card with the date and the price through the door through the letterbox - it is ALWAYS sodden and lying in a puddle.

We get the few things delivered with post by the Royal Mail and the odd other leaflet but nothing to bother us .

polnan Wed 19-Nov-25 13:42:58

so someone gets paid to delivery unwanted "rubbish" allows them to deliver? surely the other people who stuff leaflets through our doors also get paid? anyway, they immediately go into my rubbish box, keeps the world revolving I suppose!

mabon2 Wed 19-Nov-25 18:58:53

Buy a little post box for outside your flat/house .

Jaxjacky Wed 19-Nov-25 19:02:32

We too have a metal post box on the wall by the front door which has no letterbox in it at all, solid.

The income of the Post Office had fallen because people no longer send each other chatty letters - they send emails and texts instead - so they took ona contract to deliver marketing mail in bulk. That keeps them in business and the postmen paid to keep on delivering real letters as well as the marketing mailshots.

What about a metal or otherwise postbox for inside the door, so that even if the letter flap is left partly open at least the cold draught won't get right through to inside?

Wyllow3 Thu 20-Nov-25 00:14:55

loads of those on this page.

One tactic I heard about is to put 'Return to sender' on the unwanted material (if there is an address on it) and put in the postbox. Takes a bit of time, though.
