I’ve just made my bread sauce ready to freeze for CD.

It occurred to me that this is a love or hate kind of dish.

My mother only ever added water or milk to a packet🤮.

The real thing is so delicious.

Do you love it or hate it?

No.

I've never seen the point but don't eat meat of any description

Greyduster Wed 17-Dec-25 15:47:00

Not for me I’m afraid. The thought of anything with wet bread involved makes me want to throw up. I could never make DH’s favourite bread pudding, or bread and butter pudding for that very reason.

I'm another Delia Smith Multi-Clove-Recipe-Follower for that glorious AMBROSIA aka Bread Sauce. And I'm the only one in the family who likes it. Which suits me just fine. All the more for me...

My father liked it but IIRC nobody else did! I think he used to make it himself.
I’ve never made it, and we’ve never had it with Christmas dinner.

Grannybags Wed 17-Dec-25 16:32:34

My Mum always made it for Christmas dinner and I loved it. I’ve never made or bought any and you’ve made me wonder why…?!

I might have to add it this year!

I love it, and make it with the clove studded onion. It goes on to the table along with stuffing, cranberry sauce and apple sauce.

The trio of sauces with some Brussels sprouts and red cabbage would do me nicely for Christmas. Everyone else is welcome to the rest.

Mokryna, I put grated nutmeg in lots of savoury things especially if they are cheese based.

Bread sauce freezes well.

I love it. You’ve reminded me to make some.

Oh that sounds good. I had never thought about making it in advance, very helpful. Thank you

Can't stand it I'm afraid. Wish i did but it's horrible.

I agree, I won’t say what I think it looks like 🤢

Nutmeg is nice if you add a sprinkle to mashed potatoes with a pat of butter and mix well.

Just why would you want wet bread on a delicious festive meal?

BrambleJelly Wed 17-Dec-25 17:07:26

Love it! It's the best part of a Christmas dinner!

Absolutely NOT! Chuck it in the bin with the cauliflower cheese………..YUK!!!!!

The cauliflower cheese can stay, the bread sauce can go though.

ginny Wed 17-Dec-25 17:12:44

No thank you.

25Avalon Wed 17-Dec-25 17:31:50

Thank you everyone for the recipes. I don’t waste any leftover bread and have loads of breadcrumbs in the freezer so I’m halfway there. Might try the cloves. I have clove powder and whole cloves.

Rosiebee Wed 17-Dec-25 17:37:17

I've made it every year since Delia brought out her Christmas Book. You do need to buy decent bread for it. I decrust a small farmhouse loaf, cut it into slices and leave them for a day to go a bit stale - better to absorb all that milk and cream. Pop the unused breadcrumbs into the freezer for the next time we have a roast chicken. Delia's Cranberry sauce is also another must do.

I love it, no one else does. Dont know if I can be bothered to make it for just me.

Cabbie21 Wed 17-Dec-25 18:01:21

Not for me, thanks.

gentleshores Wed 17-Dec-25 18:28:02

I can't eat bread so haven't had it for decades. It wasn't a traditional thing in our family. It was more the stuffing that was traditional.

Esmay Wed 17-Dec-25 19:27:09

I love bread sauce and make it the traditional way by studding an onion with cloves and infusing ìt in warm milk .
I add salt ,pepper,a little butter ,cream and bread crumbs from stale bread .

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Wed 17-Dec-25 19:51:18

Not for me either.
I’m with whoever upthread who described it as wet bread. Bleugh!

Redrobin51 Wed 17-Dec-25 20:50:24

Hate it. Seems absolutely tasteless to me.

tanith Wed 17-Dec-25 20:52:43

Totally tasteless and is like wallaper paste blurgh!!
