I’ve just made my bread sauce ready to freeze for CD.

It occurred to me that this is a love or hate kind of dish.

My mother only ever added water or milk to a packet🤮.

The real thing is so delicious.

Do you love it or hate it?

Not for me, but my son-in-law loves it so I make it each year.

Only home made, but if I have a choice I have cauliflower cheese

We always make it with milk, very finely chopped onion, a few cloves and some white bread( no crusts). Just all boiled together until it thickens. I love it and every year I say why do we only have this once a year! That and cranberry sauce made from scratch and gravy.

We love bread sauce. We use an ancient Delia recipe. My daughter loves it so much she'd eat the whole lot!

Terribull- its not supposed to be lumpy if it is youve done it wrong.I love it- so does 2 of my sons and one of my grandsons absolutely loves it.

I cant have cranberry though because i take Warfarin- so i have redcurrant.(and lashings of bread sauce.) Leftover bread sauce is yummy heated up poured over chips or leftover roasties or bubble/squeak.

Yes must be made to original recipe stud an onion with a few cloves in milk. & after its infused remove &discard. Then add the white breadcrumbs etc.Leaving in onion makes it more like onion sauce.Still, each to their own if thats how you like it.🙂

I use Delia Smith’s recipe as well. Have always made in advance and freeze til the day. Delicious and very easy.

Oh, I'm pleased I read that, Nannan2 because someone recommended cranberry juice for DH but he takes a blood thinner (not Warfarin).

I'll go and cross it off today's shopping list.

Thank you!

It is not more like onion sauce if the onion is chopped very finely.

Love bread sauce - homemade of course. A good excuse to have turkey / chicken !!

Love bread sauce, we have it every christmas, my brother will be making it this year. We do have cranberry & cauli cheese too. Sadly there's hardly ever any left after seconds on christmas Day.

I only cook it with turkey or the rare occasion we might have a pheasant, but thinking we should have some with roast chicken too.

love it. going to daughters for xmas dinner and there is just me and her who like it. yummy

My DF, who died over 50 years ago, always made the bread sauce at Christmas and whenever we had roast chicken. (This was not often, chicken like salmon being an expensive luxury in those days.)
He made it by simmering an onion studded with cloves in milk, then removing the onion and adding bread crumbs, in fact as per Mary Berry. And it's something I do to remember him. Fortunately DH loved it too.

Chicken was always a once a year treat in the 50s/60 s. Never saw salmon apart from tinned usually pink, until much later because of the cost of both.
Now very cheap and available due to different farming methods.
On the other hand Beef of various cuts, including minced, was more commonly eaten,
As for bread sauce, it’s a total mystery to me. I might google.

Stuffing balls, bread sauce, cranberry sauce , gravy etc. They allhave their part to play in a festive turkey Christmas meal. I have a very dry mouth and bread sauce enables me to enjoy my roast potatoes, meat and brusel sprouts etc much much more

Yes and daughter in law used Delia smith reciepe andgave me the remander to freeze.

I follow a recipe from Lady Claire MacDonald (Hotel Owner from the Isle of Skye and wonderful cooksmile two whole onions studded with cloves and use day old baked bread (not steamed) as crumbs with freshly ground black pepper and 1/2tsp salt. Remove from heat and stir in butter cut in bits (if a bit stiff add little more milk to your liking.

I also follow her recipe spiced red cabbage with ground allspice and wine vinegar. My vegetarian son does all the other cooking (including the turkey)!!!
