I’ve just made my bread sauce ready to freeze for CD.

It occurred to me that this is a love or hate kind of dish.

My mother only ever added water or milk to a packet🤮.

The real thing is so delicious.

Do you love it or hate it?

I have to admit I’ve never tried it. I don’t like the idea though.

Agree with you GD: utterly grim stuff. Bread is for a sandwich or a piece of toast and nothing more!

Love it! It’s part of the Christmas dinner for us

Yuk. That is all. (I'm in the cranberry camp & make the stuffing myself).

SparklyGrandma Thu 18-Dec-25 14:10:16

No. 🥺

Love it. A delicious must have with chicken and Turkey.

yummy trouble is I am vegan but my hubby does have a festive lunch but in 10 years I have never ever asked him if he likes bread sauce! if he does I must get some I may be able to get a cheeky taste!

None of my family like bread sauce, turkey, Christmas pudding, brandy butter ,Christmas cake or cranberry sauce, all the things that make Christmas dinner to me. Chicken is turkey substitute and I can live without the rest except cranberry sauce. No point making or buying it just for me.

Love it as long as it is home-made. Have not had it for for years though either.

Pinkrinse Thu 18-Dec-25 14:33:37

No, it’s 🤢 revolting

Peaseblossom Thu 18-Dec-25 14:34:36

Bazza I always thought it sounded weird and I never fancied it, but then I had it at my sister's years ago that she had made and it was really nice, but I wouldn't fancy it if it wasn't home-made.

grandMattie Thu 18-Dec-25 14:37:29

Loathe it! Sorry. (And nothing will change my mind!)

km14 Thu 18-Dec-25 14:40:07

I’ve never had bread sauce either.

Indiebee Thu 18-Dec-25 14:46:26

It's delicious if home made! Absolutely it's not wet bread - are you making it all wrong???! Add onion, cloves, cinnamon, cream and butter to the breadcrumbs and steeped milk. As a pp said up thread, start with Delia's Christmas recipe and tweek it up if you wish.

Nannapat1 Thu 18-Dec-25 14:53:36

I love it, now the only one that does. Has to be home made: I tried supermarket ready stuff last year and it was awful so I shall make my own!

Labradora Thu 18-Dec-25 14:55:25

Love it !
So filling though.
I don't think we'll do it this year because probably a non-trad Xmas dinner.

graciemabel Thu 18-Dec-25 14:56:38

LOVE IT!! I actually like the packet mix. I'm the only one that eats it though.

Stillness Thu 18-Dec-25 14:58:23

Yes love it but it’s a packet! We will have condiments galore to please everyone but none homemade I’m afraid. Cranberry, bread, (son), apple ( grandaughter 🙄) tomato ketchup ( other grandaughter) and always extra salt and pepper for me! All processed…but hey it’s Christmas!

silverlining48 Thu 18-Dec-25 15:07:58

I have neither seen nor tasted it. We didn’t have it when I was a child.

nepitty Thu 18-Dec-25 15:08:23

Oh yes! To me it’s essential with chicken and turkey! Delia’s recipe, but I just put the cloves in with the bay leaf, as my late husband liked it if, after steeping and straining, I whizzed the onion in the milk before adding the breadcrumbs, nutmeg, pepper, butter and cream. I had to make lots, as we also loved it cold with the cold meats and pickles. At the start of Christmas preparations I would buy a large loaf of good white bread and whizz it in the food processor and freeze the crumbs, as I also used them in Delia’s vegetarian sausage rolls - another must! Happy Christmas! Xx

Never had it growing up. In laws had it, can't see the point of it except to fill you up.

You don't have enough of it to fill you up!
Unless you're a bread sauce addict.

Turkey is my least favourite meat, as it is usually far too dry.

However, as a child I had an aunt who roasted turkeys to perfection every year - she served on on New Year's Day, when we went to them.

Her chestnut stuffing, forcemeat and yes, bread sauce were all marvelous.

Nothing has ever tasted so good, since Auntie died.
