I’ve chucked away all my plastic chopping boards

After hearing some reports about tiny pieces of plastic getting into the body and possibly clogging arteries, especially from these cutting boards, I have thrown them all out and reverted to wood and marble ones. Quite likely an overreaction on my part but we have a lot of heart issues in our families so I didn’t want to tempt fate! I don’t usually react at all to these sort of reports but this one kind of gelled. Maybe I am going daft.
Do you follow any of these sort of reports ? I am also looking at yoghurt more, it is supposed to keep you young !

I have thrown mine away plus the plastic ladels and spoons.

I think the horse has bolted already. Our water is awash with microplastics.

BlueBelle Tue 30-Dec-25 06:15:03

I think helterskelter is right however having said that I do try and use as little plastic as possible I have a glass cutting board and would never use those silicon cake trays that became popular a few years ago

Well, I still use my plastic chopping boards.

I also eat a lot of yogurt (re OP).

Is that an issue as the yogurt is in plastic pots?

I think it is difficult to avoid these things nowadays.

This is the reason I no longer have a Tumble Dryer. Far more dangerous in polluting us with micro plastics than a chopping board. There is a lot of research into the problem, indicating that dryers are one of the major culprits.
As HelterSkelter1 has said, I think the horse has bolted.

I checked out my wooden chopping boards a long time ago . I used to clean them with lemon juice and salt. I bought plastic ones which I found difficult to clean ,but I thought were more hygienic .
Now they are dangerous .
I guess that all plastics are and difficult to avoid .

I replaced mine with wooden ones years back.

But I'm aware others are still polluting me with their plastic - plastic in our air, plastic in our water and those darn manufacturers putting everything in plastic containers (rather than proper ones). I've found things have got so bad re things having been put in plastic containers that I can't even find "posh" water in glass bottles any more (though I think there are one or two moral manufacturers out there still - but all I can find here is all water in plastic containers - even the better brands).

So I work on the basis of doing what I can personally - whilst getting steadily more and more depressed about what so many others are getting up to...

My chopping boards are all wood and bamboo.

Studies have shown that wood has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties.
They get scrubbed after use.

Waitrose stock mineral water in glass.

after hearing some reports
It’s been worldwide information for some years now.
I believe the Brazilians found micro plastics in a cadaver 10 years ago.
This article is more up to date: only 3 years old.

Same. I never liked the feel of plastic chopping boards anyway.

I have just one that’s laminated, which I use occasionally for e.g. cutting up raw chicken, though TBH I’m more likely to do that on a plate that’ll go in the dishwasher.

What harm could a tumble dryer do?

It's not the tumble drier, it's what goes in it, I think.

So we should be complaining about the proliferation of man-made fibres, many made from plastic, even if they do claim, virtuously, that they're made of recycled plastic bottles!

I wouldn't dream of using a marble or glass chopping board because of the damage they do to your knives. I use polypropylene ones, have been considering trying bamboo. Wood brings back memories of school and of my grandfather's butcher's shop where everything was scrubbed with carbolic.

HelterSkelter1 Tue 30-Dec-25 11:11:04

I didnt think it was a tumble dryer that was the problem, but polyester/fleece type clothes in the washing machine. The micro poly /plastic fibres leech into the water and thence into rivers/seas etc.
I also find it very depressing that the human race is destroying ourselves, animals and our beautiful world. All down to chemicals and plastics and money and war.
As said in Dads Army "We are doomed". Not our generation, but the grandchildren's onwards.

I use bamboo chopping boards and I got rid of nearly all my plastic storage boxes a few more to go but I use glass storage instead.

I use plastic/polypropylene chopping boards that go into the dishwasher after each use. I have lots to avoid cross contamination and potential food poisoning.

I think it is tiny invisible flakes from the plastic boards which no amount of cleaning would stop. In fact scrubbing would actually make it worse. I had several and used each for a different purpose but they are all gone now. I like the marble one but it is heavy. We don’t get a lot of news about this sort of thing over here except when it is about cigs. We were the first country to ban them in cafes, pubs etc many years ago. My SIL was involved with the ban and the warnings on packages. I felt very proud of him at the time.

One of my chopping boards is made from Huon Pine (bought at the Sawmill 😀).

What harm could a tumble dryer do?

It’s the microfibre containing the micro plastics, that are released into the air and eventually the water systems.

A single tumble dryer could be responsible for releasing 120m micro plastic fibres into the air each year, a study has found.

‘Tumble dryers are one of the main sources of microfibre pollution in the atmosphere, according to research by Prof Kenneth Leung, director of the State Key Laboratory of Marine Pollution (SKLMP) and department of chemistry at City University of Hong Kong.
He described the findings as “essential” for managing microfibre emissions, which are known to damage human health and the environment.’ The Guardian.

Other sources are available for those allergic to The Guardian.

And wet washing hanging about the house makes for damp air which encourages growth of moulds which release spores which are known to be injurious to human health. I'll continue using my tumble dryer.

The ubiquitous plastic. No getting away from them now, the horse has bolted. Setting up liquid meds today for Himself in disposable plastic syringes - used all the time on the ward. No getting away from plastics now. I think the world couldn’t function without them now.

Waitrose stock mineral water in glass.

If only - ie re Waitrose. The nearest one to me now is over 80 miles away....

It's on my list of "impossible wishes" if I could just instantly transport to/from places I still need/want from my home city - Waitrose, by the river, the Arts Centre, a large Boots (that doesnt shut for lunchbreak), thinks = I don't know whether we should be boycotting Marks & Spencers still or no (must go off to check that...meanwhile I'm waiting for a new cardigan I've ordered to come through from an Italian firm instead).

CariadAgain Tue 30-Dec-25 15:20:28

Quick check later - and I "theenk" Marks & Spencers is in clear to shop from. I just need to avoid anything from "that" part of Palestine that is sold there.
