I have never really spent a lot on my sheets, but now I feel as though I want to get some good quality ones
I have no idea what to go for and would appreciate some recommendations, thank you

Dorma sateen. Luxurious.

Don't buy from Dunelm. Bought several of their "good quality " high thread count sheets. Didn't last much over a year. Go for a high end brand.

I stayed at an ex boyfriend’s home donkey’s years ago and when I asked his mother “shall I strip the bed” “No you only
used them once” I will re-iron them on the bed.”
I do it now - takes 2 minutes and just as good as struggling with the ironing board

M n S cotton ones ones don't shrink at all. Just go for quality.

Their deepest fitted sheet is 38cms, is that deep enough?

Be wary of 100% cotton fitted sheets.
They shrink and won't fit on the bed.
I got caught out like that.

Surely super king would be too wide CariadAgain - it sounds to me that you really need them to be king size but much deeper?
Of course if you are using flat sheets maybe you are buying the longer ones too - I can see how difficult that would be!

I have seen some really, really deep fitted sheets somewhere... sorry can't remember where just now...
Maybe someone will have some suggestions?

I tried my old king size sheets from previous bed - but they were too narrow to even try and tuck underneath and kept shifting around.

Anyways I now have two sets of what should be good quality super king size sheets - so - at early 70's agegroup they should "see me out" and plenty of wear "to spare". I've now got 3 lots of sheets - double bed, king size and super king size. Guess I ought to do some rationalising of stocks - I need to keep some spare for any friends staying a night or two....but I do have surplus to requirements now and a house that is smaller than I'd like ideally (it's 2 bedrooms/1 bathroom/no utility room) so time for a bit of clearing out I guess.

Yes, if you are buying fitted sheets, definitely check how deep they are - modern mattresses vary quite a lot.
I like crisp cotton - M&S or White Company, but really can't do brushed cotton/ flannelette...

I find Dorma cotton very good. They are a quite heavy and a very generous size. I have flat and fitted and find the flat sheets easier to use than fitted as my arthritic fingers cannot cope withe pulling the corners down on the fitted ones.

I’ve done a lot of research on sheets .
Funnily enough I’m not too keen on the 1000 thread count . I usually go for 400-600.
Dorma bedding sold at dun elm is always good . As is hotel collection.
If fitted make sure you get correct size and depth mattresses are much deeper now.
I like silk pillowcases to keep my hair lovely and not too hot

Rise and Fall do the best cotton fitted sheets . Excellent quality and elasticated all round so never pull off at the corners. They do flat sheets , pillowcases and duvet covers do also excellent quality . Not cheap but worth every penny .

I only saw this now sorry but at least we agree.

Rise and fall fitted sheet, wonderful quality and ir springs on due to the strong elastic. it even shows you the short side very clearly. Not cheap but worth it.

I gave up struggle with fitted sheets and found a never used pair of sheets given as a wedding present and 100% cotton. I have a small double and let the sheet drape over the sides, no need to tuck in. I like to iron and the flat style is so much neater to manage that fitted ones.

I have an MS flat brushed cotton sheet this winter tucked in with hospital corners and it has hardly moved in days. And a flat sheet can be used under or over you.
Never seen mattress suspenders. Will Google.

I’ve found JL bedding ok but I’ve given up with fitted sheets. They eventually shrink regardless of where I buy them and then they’re a struggle to get on the bed and I end up buying more. Now, I buy a pure cotton flat sheet and tuck it in under the mattress and it’s perfect and I actually prefer it.

.

I don't know your age but if you are 'getting on a bit' (and even if you aren't!!) then I very much recommend the fully fitted M&S brushed cotton fitted sheets.

By fully fitted I mean that all four sides are fully elasticated NOT just the fiddly corners. All the way around.

It really helps to make changing the bed so much easier and less exhausting.

I bought the brushed cotton fitted ones a year+ ago and they are really great - cool in summer, warm in winter. Launders perfectly and can go in the dryer. No point in ironing. Different mattress depths available. Ridiculously low price

I bought four in King Size for two beds.
Brilliant.

Very much recommended for a cosy night's sleep.
.

Would king size fitted (or superking size fitted) ones do for a mattress that is effectively 13 inches thick (by the time one takes into two mattress toppers on top)?

You better believe JUST how heavy a mattress that thick can be.....agh!

I have always gone for high count Egyptian cotton. They are lovely with an almost silky feel and wear very well.

Good to hear that - as that's what I've just done recently - ie high count Egyptian cotton.

Thought hadnt occurred to me when I found my new bed was harder than my old bed and bought a mattress topper for it and thought "Still not as soft as my old bed" and bought a 2nd one and so I've got two on my bed now !!!! that that would mean I needed to swop using king size sheets (for my king-size bed) and now have to have super king size ones and that's a harder size to get as well.

Marks and Spencer flanellette

I swapped from White Company to M&S Egyptian Cotton last year. The M&S ones are far superior in my opinion and require much less ironing and look smarter. I’ve now changed all the bedding and have a lot of dust sheets!

20+ years ago we shifted up to 600tc, soon after to 800tc then @6m later to 1.000tc. Love them! Gave the 600 & 800 to my son and built up a full collection of 1,000tc for all bed linen. We buy them from John Lewis mostly.

I always go to Just Linen/Dawson's which has a huge range.
