I went to a Christmas lunch recently and noticed that most of the ladies were wearing trousers (mostly black). I wore a dress. Are trousers the go to choice for a lot of people, and, if so, where do they buy them and what sort? Thank you.

I wear trousers most days unless it's a church service .
Our very old church is so cold that I've started wearing double thermals under a dress .
When it snowed last week- I wore trousers for the first time there.

Things have changed.
I can recall a time when a dress code was mooted.

I usually buy trousers from Yours , Bon Marche (velour) and M and S .
Yours clothes are roomy for chubby girls .
I found some Primark trousers a bit skimpy
If buying something warm ,fleece lined and practical I'll buy them from Sports Direct .
I often wear black ,but also love any shade of green .
I also wear some navy and grey .

I'd like to wear jeans and might do if I lose my tum and big bottom as I have some amazing embroidered ones from my friend's retro hippie dippie shop.

I can't recall the last time that I wore a skirt .
I used to wear kilts ,which I still love. They have become expensive.
And I used to always make all my own skirts from Liberty fabric.

Mirren
My DD is 5ft 11 and buys a lot of her clothes, especially trousers from ‘Long Tall Sally’ if you don’t know of them.

I hadn’t heard of Orientique GrammaH so I had a look online. The dresses are very colourful but I couldn’t carry them off being short in height.

I wear sweat pants and "lounge wear" at home and occasionally go out shopping in jeans but, in general, I rarely wear trousers and I'd certainly never consider them for any sort of 'smart' do. I'm a size 14/16, I love dresses, particularly from the Australian brand Orientique as I love their bright colours and they do some super styles . I do feel that the black trouser / glittery top evening look is a bit of a uniform, like jeans, harbour tops & gilets in the day time. I prefer to be different!

Mirren the older you get the easier it will be for you to find the clothes you want in your size in the shops. My DDiL the further side of 55 is over 6 foot, as are a number of other female friends and relations. Looking at my DGD generation, they are all considerably taller than the generations before them.

At 5ft 4.5 inches. I was average/ just above average height for my generation. My daughter is that height and has been among the shortest in her age group wherever she has worked.

I am a 6 foot plus 70y old lady... unusual,I know. Trousers can be an issue for length .
Likewise, dresses can be problematic with short waists .
Thankfully a lot of Scandinavian firms cater for the very tall so I am far better catered for than when I was younger and forced into matronly clothes.
Fortunately I also love sewing and have Bohemian tastes so, between my me made wardrobe and my Scandinavian wardrobe , I am more than well catered for in my " old age "
In answer to the original question about what to wear on a night out,I would always choose a dress and lovely shoes, I adore good shoes. ... again Scandinavian as I am a size 8 .
Born in the wrong country!

I’ve always worn trousers, but in the last year I’ve been wearing dresses especially wool ones. It’s easier and more comfortable.

Trousers and dresses for my age are a problem because they, particularly M&S seem to be fixed on a shorter profile, so even the longer skirts have too high a waist. I am only 167, which is not super tall, but my tiny (155) mother loved them.

Not from where I'm standing at a much smaller 5'3". I have to pull the skirts for their regular size to sit under my bust or they are trailing along the ground. Even their Petite range waists seem to be in a funny place but then they are too short.

I only wear dresses for very special occasions. I have changed my drainpipe style for flares because as I have got older, I've got a bigger torso and skinny little legs coming down from a much flatter bottom. The difference wearing flares has been quite dramatic.
I have also started buying for my body shape rather than just going for clothes that I just liked. I am starting to feel more confident in my appearance so, who knows, I might even start to wear more dresses!

A bit stuck at the moment.

I am pear shaped always a size bigger below, but over the last few years have developed a bit of a tum. I have always bought skirt/blouse instead of a dress as a result.

I have a proper waist which is also a problem with M&S. Bon Marche made good jeans long and shaped enough, but not trousers and the quality and supply dropped through the floor when they were taken over. I bought a pair recently from my local garden centre, who have quite smart ones. If anyone can recommend jeans and tidy trousers in 32 length?

I was at a New Year party and was complimented on my outfit several times, particularly the trousers. Didn't have the heart to tell several young females that my wide legged trousers were 10 years old and top 12 years. Trousers M & S, top from Edinburgh Woollen Mill. Worn at my 50th wedding anniversary 10 years ago. Nothing is new in fashion. Just buy what you like wherever you find it.

Another advantage for what you describe as a Christmas lunch is that you can wear Christmas jumpers/t-shirts/ sweat tops (depending on how hot the venue is) with trousers and add to the gaiety of the occasion. I’ve never seen Christmas dresses but can’t see myself investing in one anyway.

There are plenty available on line in the Christmas season, but they are just fun dresses. I have two that I wear for fun parties.

I've bought some really warm ones from Uniqlo. There are shops in some big cities, but I had to get mine online. They also do extra warm stuff, Heat-tech, and it's fashionable.

But only rather large sizes by the look of it. I was getting really hopeful I could find some warm smart trousers.

Musicgirl Mon 12-Jan-26 19:20:06

@Oreo, you have a point but neither Queen Victoria or Queen Elizabeth the Second had to battle through the crowds in M and S in the vain hope that something will fit them properly. Every stitch of clothing they wore was made especially for them with the best quality materials.

Oreo Mon 12-Jan-26 18:47:42

I love dresses in Summer but it’s jeans of any kind and warm jersey trousers in Winter or a woolly type dress and leggings.
Good value jersey trousers from Bon Marche.

I can’t get dresses to fit me! I’m 4’11”. I had a nightmare last year shopping for a wedding outfit. So called ‘petite’ dresses were a joke! I decided that a trouser suit would have been easier.

Just remember that you’re at least an inch taller than Queen Victoria was, and the late Queen Elizabeth was tiny too so you’re in good company.😃

langelei Mon 12-Jan-26 18:38:25

TiggyW …. Please do tell, am equally that short. Did you actually manage to find a trouser suit that fitted? And where from. Thank you.🙏 Have looked everywhere.

I wear cords or velour trousers in the winter and autumn for warmth. I but most of them on ebay from businesses

Frenchgalinspain Mon 12-Jan-26 15:32:29

I find the ZARA trouser & matching suit jacket pairing to look marvelous and go from office to evening ..

Color schemes: Signature black and white / beige or camel with navy or chocolate / vanilla with a black silk shirt / pearl grey or silvery grey with a deeper grey shirting ..

Always smart ..

Other classic shops are: Zara / Punto Roma / Bennetton / Mango /

leggings or gym trousers for winter maxi dresses for summer. dont know why i think my legs are quite good! but i love the feeling of maxi dresses. they seem to be cooler than short dresses i assume its because as you move you waft them around!

Cazza1953 Mon 12-Jan-26 15:01:12

I always wear trousers, I don’t possess a dress or a skirt. My ankles are always swollen and I’m conscious of them, hence the trousers.

Musicgirl Mon 12-Jan-26 14:57:12

I wear black or navy blue M and S elasticated waist trousers most of the time as these suit my lipodoema shape better. I still have a waist but thick legs and a large midriff. When it is warmer, I like dresses or, occasionally, skirts - preferably maxi length to hide my legs. I look terrible in cropped length trousers às I also have disproportionately short legs and l have not owned a pair of shorts in decades. In spring and autumn, l will often wear a knee length tunic over black leggings.

I wear jeans all the time, and have done for years. But I only ever buy them online these days, and I’m constantly amazed at how inadequate the descriptions are — particularly with regard to the inside leg length. Even when you try to look this up in the size guide, sometimes all you’re told is +10 cm or –10 cm, with no indication of what measurement you need to add that to or deduct it from! It’s also often not stated whether they’re high- or mid-rise. Best advice: be sure to read the reviews before ordering.

I sometimes find tights warmer than trousers, and dresses are surprisingly easy to wear. I especially like a knitted dress. Just one thing to put on and easier in the loo 😉. I often prefer them if I’ve got to do a long drive as well - I find them more comfortable than jeans or trousers somehow. I often find it hard to get footwear right with trousers.

I do like a skirt too - nice to have a patterned skirt with a plain top and because skirts don’t wear out, I’ve bought some really nice ones in charity skirt shops.

I struggle to get a fit in M&S, managed to buy the odd jumper, but that’s about it. Last few years, trousers have come from Uniqlo, Jigsaw or Cos. Took to wearing premium denim a few years ago, because I was struggling to get a fit in jeans and I have never gone back. I buy new ones every 2 years or so and still have lots of old ones for housework/gardening.
