“I’m not saying childhood experiences don’t influence us, I’m saying as we move through adolescence into adult life, part of growing up is realising that this is the first time mum and dad did this - they’re doing their best”
Part of growing up is also experiencing how other families live and often realising how dysfunctional your upbringing was.

Brooklyn Beckham
(205 Posts)This is a very lighthearted thread, with a sad undertone.
Just read a piece from Sunday Times, written by a journalist who interviewed Brooklyn.
It was after his marriage, but before he decimated his family, aimed at both his parents, online.
The article shows Brooklyn loving his parents, adoring his wife, and living his best life.
Yet, is he? He doesn’t appear to have any inclination to take paid work seriously, despite lots of encouragement and support from both his parents.
Though I don’t think I’d had thrust my children into the limelight in the way Victoria and David have done, there’s no question that they have been loving and supportive parents, have a strong work ethic and family is important to them. David in particular does plenty of charity work and Victoria sometimes smiles in public.
Why then have Brooklyn and his wife Nicola become so hostile towards the Beckhams, and more importantly why are they playing this out so publicly?
Is this just a case of two horribly spoilt and over indulged, entitled young people or are David and Victoria terrible people and parents?
For me, I think it’s the former!
Anyone else think the same?

One day, Brooklyn, this could be you and you will be bewildered where you went wrong.
I was watching tv this morning and got the impression that the media and the general public want to see the footage of Victoria dancing with her son!
The whole thing needs a lid putting on it. I think David has tried to do a bit of damage limitation. That should be it.
Any more is going to cause more distress to the family so the media and Brooklyn need to stop.
At some point in his life I think BB will regret what he has done.

I agree.
The problem is that it is all played out in public although I can't say I've ever been particularly aware of the Beckham children over all these years, just an occasional family photo at some event.
Boring.

I couldn't care less what is drone does. he has failed at every career he has tried and lives off his parents and in-laws.
I simply do not understand why the sad family breakdown involving this nonenity should warrant even one line in the newspapers, let alone the ludicrous space it is getting at a time when the world is imploding and the power of life and death rests in the hands of mad men..
I agree 100% with you Monica, you have put it much better than I could have done. I didn’t really have an opinion on the Beckhams until I watched both David’s and Victoria’s documentaries on Netflix and from watching those programmers I have concluded that both of them have worked very hard to achieve the level of success and wealth they are enjoying. Victoria supported David during every move he made in his football career in several countries and also during the time when his fidelity was forensically examined in the tabloids. David has supported Victoria in her fashion business which has had its share of ups and downs and David does a great deal to support various charities. Brooklyn seems to have spent his life playing at being a footballer, then a photographer, then a cook and finally part of a celebrity couple presumably funded by his parents and latterly his wife’s wealthy parents.
On the claims Brooklyn is making, the late Queens’s comment “ recollections may vary” seems very appropriate, there is evidence to suggest the claims about Victoria pulling out of completing Nicole’s dress at the last minute and taking over the first dance with Brooklyn at their wedding are not true.
I feel very sad for David and Victoria and their other three children, to have your family business discussed and dissected in the media must be a terrible experience, the sooner it is yesterday’s news the better.
Poor little rich boy
Lacking the talent of his father, the drive and intelligence of his mother, hes a bit of a lost soul isnt he. I suspect not the sharpest knife in the drawer but living in the public eye he has to be seen to achieve. In a normal family he would probably have found his niche but he's not "allowed" to be a brickie or a plumber or a long distance lorry driver or a gardener or whatever he is good at..
But what shocks me is a family who find it normal to communicate by Instagram.
We communicate by WhatsApp!
Oh dear, are we not normal?
Don't answer that 😁
Is he bright enough to train as a plumber or any other job requiring skill? Perhaps, I don't know, but I agree, it would have been good if he had been able to find his own path.
Lacking the talent of his father, the drive and intelligence of his mother
It I reported that he obtained good GCSE and A level results and worked in a coffee shop age 15, so he sounds as if he was quite grounded then
He left his degree course after a year because he said he was homesick.
All very curious, but as I said, there seems to be often a common denominator in these cases.
It is reported
Has wee Brooklyn perhaps got a lucrative book deal? A book, a film, a play, a TV deal or an exposè is usually on the way when there's an explosion of publicity.
I have been mulling over what Brooklyn has said the last few days, one of the things he said in his statement was that "for my entire life my parents have controlled the narrative in the press about our family. The performative Social Media posts, family events and inauthentic relationships have been a fixture of the life I was born into."
He is 26 He married in 2022 , and hadn't made any real effort to find his niche in society apart from making a few videos about cooking.
He has lived a very sheltered and privileged life with famous parents who have staff to take care of things like media release and photo shoots of their " family life" yes it is unreal it isn't authentic , we know that, why does he think he needs to tell us how hard his life was, does he think we will be sorry for him.
Why not get out there and find some proper work to take your mind off what was bad in life then and make it right in your life now.
False memory syndrome?
Recollections may definitely vary.
A Vogue reporter invited to the wedding says:
The newlyweds' first dance was to South African singer Lloyiso's rendition of Elvis Presley’s Can’t Help Falling in Love.
Marc Anthony, a close friend of David and Victoria, took to the stage much later into the reception at 11pm to perform his track I Need To Know.
It was at this point 'Brooklyn invited his mother on stage for a dance and they were joined by David and their 10-year-old daughter, Harper.'
The claim that Brooklyn 'invited' his mother to dance is in direct contrast to his statement that 'Marc Anthony called me to the stage, where in the schedule was planned to be my romantic dance with my wife but instead my mum was waiting to dance with me instead.'
🤔
Well, a lot of guests were there but but were banned from taking photos or videos.
As others have pointed out, many of Brooklyn’s claims eg the first dance, the wedding dress, seating plans have been contradicted by the wedding planner and others involved in the wedding.
His statement that his ‘entire life has been controlled the narrative about their family …. Performative social media posts , inauthentic family events and relationships ‘ is not a surprise to anyone. Brand Beckham is what funded his lifestyle and enabled his public platform.
The DJ was also reported to have said something like now can we have the most beautiful woman in the room up to the stage ….Victoria Beckham.
I don’t know if this is true or not but I, as the bride, would have been a bit upset by this.
However believe just a tenth of what you read.
Do we think the DJ set out to humiliate the Bride? No matter how hard the couple try to structure every minute, things will happen
The best man’s speech hasn’t been mentioned 🤣🙈
If Brooklyn really wants to step out on his own with his wife he should refuse to be financed by his family as well. He should turn down their money and work hard to earn his own, nothing like earning your own money to make a person feel empowered, and more importantly, independent.
Come to that he should refuse any money his wife’s family is paying him - if they are that is - and work to not only just earn money but the respect of his detractors who just see him as a whinging little rich boy with a mummy complex.
Btw have any of the Beckhams children gone to Uni?
Surely this is a stepping stone for children to become independent.
sodapop
Absolutely agree MOnica it's ludicrous the amount of media space and time given over to this self serving family.
Ditto.
Uni isn't for everyone Fallingstar and our ES started go become independent at 17 without going to university.

Am sorry Smileless2012 but what does ES stand for, I know most of the initials now but not this one.
Falling star, evidently Brooklyn did a year of a degree course before dropping out because he was homesick.
I’ve just seen a Facebook headline quoting him as saying his parents never helped him, he’s achieved everything on his own.
ES = estranged son Fallingstar.
He's doing a sterling job of garnering sympathy for his parents Iam and providing an insight into what they've had to put up with.
I'm casting my mind back to all the famous people who have been controlled by parents, often having a hand in ruining their lives and pushing them into dangerous situations that at times caused a whole gamut of mental health problems, addictions and at worst early deaths. Whilst the parents have used their children's success for their own ends. In particular, Judy Garland, Natalie Wood, The Jackson Five, Brittany Spears, Justin Bieber, McCaulay Culkin, Drew Barrymore, Brooke Shields have all suffered from "the pushy parent" Those aforementioned certainly had some talent between them.
Now we have a multitude of the "no particular talent whatsoever", the worst exponents of pump it up and pimp it out have to be the Kardashians. Kylie Jenner started mucking about with facial surgery when she was still a teenager. Of course they've made a fortune out of all of it, Kylie's allegedly a billionaire through her make up range.
I think given how the eyes of the world are now focused upon them, the Beckhams need to seriously rethink parading young schoolgirl Harper around in what looks like varying silk negligees to match those of her mothers and try and protect her from the exploitative nature of the celebrity daughter who is coerced into marketing themselves solely on looks and nothing else.
