Wetherspoons as a eat out and social do`s

Our local one serves a good chilled Sauvignon Blanc and DH says a good pint (at a good price) but the food isn’t brilliant the tables are sticky and it is a bit run down but always really busy. Not my choice really much nicer places to go locally.

My DH would agree with yours re good prices and a decent pint. He meets a friend in there once a month for a pint and catch up. Along with his free bus pass to get there it’s a cheap afternoon out for them.

I was very sceptical at first, but we found ourselves in our small town early one morning and instead of going home for breakfast we decided to try Wetherspoons. . We both had a delicious, cheap breakfast in front of a blazing fire. It was great 👍

PS We had a major power cut at home today, so we went down and had a good breakfast in front of a roaring fire at Wetherspoons.

Robin what a strange post some ‘rather odd people’ so never again what is an ‘odd person’ I ve never seen any odd people in ours just lots of very, very ordinary folk, young, old, unemployed, workers in fact all sorts
Do explain what these ‘odd people’ were like or were doing I m intrigued

My daughter went in to one with her partner for breakfast and said never again, as some rather odd people in there which made her feel uncomfortable.

You get all walks of life in a Wetherspoons, l find it part of the attraction.

You get all ‘walks of life’ in any eating place that is pub level and not fine dining, isn’t that part of the rich variety of life.

Definitely don’t frequent Wetherspoons……..far sooner support independent local businesses, might cost slightly more but well worth the superior quality. I am very choosy what I eat.

Never been in one but have heard from different people that the breakfasts are really good.

I love Wetherspoons and our nearest one in Ashby is really nice. Aside from the lovely garden area which had fantastic hanging baskets last summer it is very welcoming for everyone from young families to older people.

I've been to the Windsor one and Stratford on Avon too.

It's one of the places a woman feels comfortable and happy alone.

Spoons filling a gap in the market from up market pretentious eateries to plain diabolical greasy caffs! I have always found them clean and tidy with well trained staff, and a reasonable choice on their menu. A godsend for students on a tight budget as well as OAP,s .Don't keep knocking them.

Gfplux no short memory for me as I said upthread I can’t stand the owner or his political views however he has saved a lot of wonderful buildings and has a business aimed at working class people and uses British food where possible so you have to weigh up pros and cons
I m sure there are many business people with views I maybe don’t agree with hope you haven’t got a Dyson or ever buy from Next

I find people can be snobs. Until their money runds lower.
Then all of a sudden, they are quite happy to join other people!

Oh, and their "principles", fly out the window!

Wetherspoons have revolutionised the pub industry. They have enabled people who otherwise possibly afford to go to pubs to eat or drink. I have seen the lovely staff in our local one turn a blind eye to elderly people who come in for the unlimited hot drinks and take out their own sandwiches. Spoons are phenomenally successful, even branching out into Europe. They are giving people what they want. I for one couldn't care less about the owner's views.

I have been told the hotels are good and rival Premier Inns which in my experience are going down hill, particularly the restaurants attached to them.

Well, you don't here, quite a few are frequented based on religious affiliation. I find it preferable when that's not the case .. if that makes me a snob by your standards I'm happy.

Spoons has to be the last resort. Support small independent places. They’ve put a lot of the smaller ones out of business. Plus the main bloke is a complete waste of time.

Snobbish indeed.
I love the variety of customers in Spoons. It’s great to see big family groups of parents and small children and often grandparents too. We often see a group of middle aged men obviously on a catch up. We’ve seen lady knitters. We see carers with residents from local care homes. Bikers pop in to the beer garden. Students nip in at lunchtime.

I think they should set aside a special area exclusively for snobs surrounded by decorative trellis covered in plants so they do not have to look at ghastly people “from all walks of life”. It would, of course, be clearly signposted “Snobs Only”. 🤣
