Landlines- do you still have one?

Very few people ring me on my landline, just a few who presumably have the number stored from years ago, so when it rings it’s invariably a cold call..I used to have a call monitoring service but I don’t quite know what has happened to that and unless a known name flashes up when it rings I’m tempted to ignore.
BUT like most people of my generation I was brought up to answer it, so, I run out of the shower, or run round the other side of the bed, or in from the garden, play hunt the handset etc and it’s yet another “energy adviser” or double glazing or patio doors or whatever.
Unlike some people I either hang up or say No I’m not interested, thank you and hang up, as I’m not interested in scoring points off Microsoft man , but this morning was ridiculous- it was 7.35! A time reserved, in our family, for urgent phone calls.
Just rude.
OK I could just ignore it or should I give in and have the landline removed? Seems a bit drastic but this morning I could have chucked it into next week!

We got rid of ours when we upgraded our Sky broadband package and in all honesty, we've not missed it one bit. Anyone who needs to get hold of us has our mobile numbers.

Yes, we still have landlines.

In our home (my use plus our children and GC call) and in my husband's office (his business). Mobile phone reception, here, is unacceptable.

The last time we had one was the year 2000. So 26 years ago.

Haven't had a landline for a good few years now, the moment my broadband provider said I didn't need one, it was gone. Don't miss it, but I did rather like the piece of furniture the phone was on, with a small lamp, sticky notes and a pen,

It might just be different here in Germany but I would find using my mobile whilst at home very odd when there is a landline phone installed. Apart from anything the reception is far better and the battery is more likely to hold out for an hour-long call.

Far prefer using the landline. Thought they were going to be installed differently (or something), not abolished.

Calendargirl Wed 11-Feb-26 15:02:33

We gave ours up when we had full fibre installed.

I was reluctant to, but in all honesty, haven’t missed it.

Did away with ours the last time I renewed my Plusnet BB, only had a couple people who called on it (if a name didn't appear we never answered cold callers) and they now call the mobiles. Haven't missed it.

Got rid of mine a few years back, not missed it at all.

tanith Wed 11-Feb-26 15:19:23

I got rid of mine 5yrs ago don't miss it at all.

Harris27 Wed 11-Feb-26 15:23:20

Mine sits alongside the telly. No one rings and I very rarely answer it when I know it’s definitely a cold call. I kept it for my brother ringing me . He died last year and I still watch it around 6 pm on a Sunday when he’d ring me.

62Granny Wed 11-Feb-26 15:23:45

We do but only my Dsis, rings me on it, but I don't get unwanted calls as our phone has the call minder facility.

I made sure my mum kept hers as she’s always loosing her mobile, at least I can get through to her

Greenfinch Wed 11-Feb-26 15:47:20

I am in exactly the same position as the OP and echo her sentiments. We have to pay £3 a quarter for a landline we don’t use and a certain amount for the messaging facility that nobody ever uses now. I think we will have it removed when our current contract expires. Having said that my mobile is Pay as you Go and calls are very expensive and so have to be made on DH’s phone. Not ideal!

I still have a landline and I often have t ring abroad. Its much clerer than the mobile. I was speaking to the USA a couple of days ago and the recipient sounded like she was in the next room and remarked how clear the line was. Ive got a few handsets dotted around the house.

JamesandJon33 Wed 11-Feb-26 16:47:24

Yes, we were upgraded but kept the landline as we are quite rural.

Redcar Wed 11-Feb-26 16:55:03

I’ve still got a landline, one of my daughters rings it regularly and a friend rings me on it, mobile reception isn’t brilliant in my living room. I also use it if I have a problem with the mobile.

We use WhatsApp and calls are free, even international ones

I have a land line but no-one rings it and I don't use it. I'm contemplating getting rid of it.

boheminan Wed 11-Feb-26 18:14:54

I have a landline with the same number I was issued 48 years ago. I don't have a mobile, so it's useful.

Oldnproud Wed 11-Feb-26 18:25:14

We still have one, but although we get a few calls on it (mainly cold sellers or scammers), the last time someone asked me for the number I could no longer remember it!

valdavi Wed 11-Feb-26 18:28:58

We do, we've had the digital one 14 months now and only my mum & my son have ever used it. It's a new number, maybe that's why we never get unwanted callers (as yet).
We need it because we don't monitor our mobiles as religiously as perhaps we should, so urgent communications are better by landline.

Treebee Wed 11-Feb-26 18:39:52

Yes we have a landline and I don’t want to lose it. I have a mobile but rarely use it, never have it on at home and only give my number out when there’s no other option. DH has his mobile on all the time but he doesn’t get many calls on it.
