That first morning cup of tea.

Nothing quite like it first thing. I usually do a little bit of housework clutching my hot water and lemon. Sit down time with my computer with a lovely cup of tea. Quite fussy about the tea bags so usually have the gold box ones from M&S. DH is very happy with the cheapo decaf teabags. How do you start your day?

Being very much a creature of habit, my breakfast only varies twice a year. So......sometime in October, I will start having porridge and summer berries (from frozen), with that huge mug of tea. Sometime in April, I will change over to having a bowl of Fruit & Fibre with the summer fruit alongside the same huge mug of tea. Do not feel entirely human until I have had my tea. Have a lovely, large mug with lid and container which takes a tea bag. All put out ready the night before, as I walk into my kitchen just turn on my boiling water tap, run mug underneath it to warm and make that vital mug of tea.

Three spoons of PG Tips leaf tea into the teapot (it has an inbuilt strainer), let it mash for a few minutes and then pour out with just a splash of milk in my special mug. Then I sit and drink it by the Rayburn (with our friends’ dog if she’s here on her holidays) whilst reading the Good Morning thread on Gransnet. My sons say it’s the equivalent of starting up an old engine. The more mugs of builders’ tea that go down, the easier it is to fire up! grin They’re not wrong.

I can’t drink tea in the morning - it has to be coffee for me in a breakfast cup, but I will usually have a cup of tea at some stage during the day. I can’t drink tea with milk, it makes me throw up, so I usually drink Tik Tok rooibos, or a herbal brew from Pukka’s vast range. I keep Earl Grey for my DiL’s visits, and builders for - well - builders!

Went off tea when I was last pregnant 50 years ago. Not drunk it since. I usually have a quick drink of cold water then out walking with the dogs. Fruit juice and cereal when I get back.

Cup of strong tea with drop of milk. Preferably Barry's Irish teabags.

Chocolatelovinggran Fri 13-Feb-26 09:35:40

I love my weak and milky morning tea.
Like you, sodapop, pregnancy changed my taste buds and coffee has never tasted the same since that time.

Flippinheck Fri 13-Feb-26 09:40:25

No tea for me. Strong black coffee x 2 and an apple or some sort of egg. I was brought up on tea but can’t stand it now. No idea why.

Grannybags Fri 13-Feb-26 09:42:38

Strong Yorkshire tea in my special breakfast mug along with a bowl of Bran Buds or All Bran

Rooibos for the rest of the day

Nothing like a good mug of tea to start the day. I often accompany it with a slice of toast or a crumpet with butter.
We usually buy Co-op tea bags as DH works there, but at the moment we are drinking tea from the Northumberland tea company as we were gifted a food hamper at Christmas and they were among the goodies.

The first thing I do on waking is go and make a cup of tea, I like it fairly strong, not too much milk and must be in a china mug. I take it back to bed and enjoy it whilst scrolling through the internet.

Once I’m up, showered and dressed I like a cup of coffee. I don’t eat breakfast, my stomach can’t handle food before about 1pm.

The first cup of tea of the day always tastes the best for some reason. I don’t really enjoy it at any other time even though I drink it out of habit and I’ve no preference as to which tea bags.

Youngerthanspringtime Fri 13-Feb-26 09:49:29

I like to take a cup of Rooibos tea back to bed for a little while.
I take Thyroxine in the morning so can't drink caffeinated drinks or eat anything until about an hour after that.
Franbern, would you recommend the boiling water tap - is it worth the initial outlay? I've often thought about it.

Georgesgran Fri 13-Feb-26 09:52:23

Not a tea connoisseur, but I buy decent brands (can’t stand Ringtons) and have 2 big cups to kick off my day, but no breakfast. I drink latte to socialize when I’m out, but other than wine, I don’t drink anything cold.

AGAA4 Fri 13-Feb-26 09:52:30

Yorkshire tea for me too with my porridge.
I can then start my day.

Nandalot Fri 13-Feb-26 09:54:19

Because I was spoilt, my mother would wake me up every morning with a cup of tea. I told DH I would only marry him if he would do the same. 58 years later he is still true to his word!

tanith Fri 13-Feb-26 10:04:35

First thing is go downstairs make a cuppa take it back to bed and watch the news on my iPad while scrolling other stuff. Once I’m up showered and dressed Winter breakfast is porridge with raspberries Summer it’s Bran Flakes or Shredded Wheat with fruit.
It’s been a cuppa in bed first thing for 30 odd yrs DH and I took it in turns when he was alive. Now I never get brought a lovely hot cuppa in bed.

I get up with the (two) dogs about seven. Kettle on, feed dogs and let them out. Twinings strong english breakfast teabag. Dogs back inside and sit either end of the settee. I sit between them with my mug of tea. Second mug follows about twenty minutes later. Breakfast around thirty minutes later. Bircher muesli ( mixed myself with pear juice the night before) with blueberries, greek yoghurt and home made dukkah. My wife wakes up between 8.30 and 9. I make her tea and take it up. The dogs go too.
Creatures of habit?

Usedtobeblonde Fri 13-Feb-26 10:37:32

I like a cup of tea as soon as I wake up.
I had a Teasmade for many years but when it stopped working I bought a kettle for my bedroom.
My GD brings my tray with a small teapot, a China mug and a small flask of milk and leaves it on the landing for when I wake up.
I then boil the kettle and make my pot of tea.
It is my regular routine and is bliss.
Two cups of Yorkshire tea and I am ready to face the day.

We rarely sleep past 6am - can't seem to break the habit from working and getting 5 children off to school. One of us will go down and feed the cats and make a pot of tea. We then have 2 mugs (always the same ones) in bed while watching BBC Breakfast and usually get up about 8.

crazyH Fri 13-Feb-26 11:03:35

Coffee is my first drink .

Blossoming Fri 13-Feb-26 11:06:29

I start my day with the first of my prescription meds, then an hour later MrB brings me my first cup of tea in bed.

mummytummy Fri 13-Feb-26 11:53:17

Ever since the children were small I love getting up before everyone else, mug of strong tea, once spring arrives will sit outside in the garden listening to the birds and enjoying the peace. In the winter months I would sit in the conservatory where it’s a little warmer looking out onto the garden and listen to the birdsong

Now it’s just myself and DH I still like to get up and have that time to myself before the day starts.

MollyNew Fri 13-Feb-26 13:03:12

Like others, I start my day with water and thyroxine but after that I have a lovely cup of Twinings Breakfast tea with my porridge or toast and peanut butter. I don't like coffee first thing but do have one for elevenses.

MayBee70 Fri 13-Feb-26 13:12:57

Because I’m taking iron tablets in the morning I, too, can’t have a cuppa on waking. But prior to that I’d already started to have a mug of hot water on waking. And I seem to have switched my cup of tea to a cup of coffee to wake myself up; it’s my only caffeinated drink of the day. If I drink it later I can’t sleep.

SusieB50 Fri 13-Feb-26 13:16:11

The first cup of tea in the morning has to be leaf tea , I’m up at around 7.30 make a pot take meds and watch Breakfast news.
Breakfast at about 8.30 always bran flakes. seeds, fruit and yoghurt. I’m happy to have tea bags fovr the rest of the day , I love fresh coffee but it doesn’t like me unfortunately.
