I like Nicky Elite paper. It is quilted, not as thick as some, but still strong. It is also much cheaper. I used to buy it from Savers, but my local Asda now sells it which is more convenient.

I’ve recently had a “toilet spray” installed next to my loo. They are very common in Asian countries and I always used them when I was travelling. You just give yourself a quick spray with a jet of water and there is no need for toilet paper. It feels more hygienic and clean. It’s also great for cleaning the loo and I’m thinking that it will have paid for itself within a year.
I do of course provide loo paper for guests who are not so keen on the idea!

I use Naked Paper recycled loo paper and tissues.
I don't use Who Gives a Crap as they are not as eco friendly. They bleach theirs and wrap each roll individually in printed paper .. all unnecessary.
Naked Paper is unbleached and comes in a box of rolls that are not individually wrapped.

Ref the post above recommending Naked Sprout .... just to say it us renamed Naked Paper now.

I have recently changed my choice of loo roll yet again as the one I was using was too thick and wasn't flushing away and the replacement needed a wad as it disintegrated in use. I think my current choice, Sainsbury's non-quilted made from recycled paper, is better.

The rolls are getting so narrow now, have you noticed? they used to fill the width of my loo roll holder, but not any more.

Am not sure I would trust a spray but it sounds interesting. I use wet toilet wipes but they go in a bin next to the toilet and some find that grim, but it is emptied regularly, but still there is a need for toilet paper to dry off.

I use wet wipes too but place them in a compostable doggy bag before putting them in the bin. Can't imagine just putting them in the bin without weapoing!!

Yes, use them too at times, I make sure they are biodegradable wet wipes.

My friend who is a plumber always advises against the thick toilet paper because it takes longer to break down causing blockages. He says the cheaper the better. Not because your cheap or your bum shouldn’t have something soft but because it breaks down quickly and keeps the drains clear of blockages.

We have had Chinese loos installed, great for underneath washing, but the paper gets shredded and does not flush well in one if them. Advised to try Nicky and that does seem to disappear more easily. And it js excellent value too!

They are hygienic in our country because of the way our cut off valve works, where in other countries some of the water goes back up inside for the next person. My husband explained it to me probably a lot better than I’m explaining it.

HelterSkelter1 I also gave up on Waitrose Essential paper. Over the years I've had to change brands a few times times when they were "improved" and am currently using M&S Aloe Vera paper which isn't quilted and is reasonably strong.
My daughter uses Who Gives a Crap but I find it too thin (and expensive).
My husband was a consulting civil engineer specialising in water systems and I would never be allowed to use quilted paper!

Thank you for all your comments. I was just so pleased that I was able to clear the blockage and not have to call out a plumber. And I am flushing the loo every hour. With all the rain we have had I don't have to worry that I am wasting water. I am sure the reservoirs are full to the brim.

Faecal matter is quite fatty, as far as I know. How does a plain cold spray dislodge all of that - especially from all the nooks and crannies. ...and hair...

Can I put in a word for portable bidets. Basically an oval shaped plastic bowl with lips at the side. It fits over the toilet pan, you lift the seat first. Fill with water, and wash yourself like using a bidet. Then tip the water down the toilet. I swear by mine. My sister bought one for her husband to use when he was disabled and struggled to get into the shower. I think mine was about £15 from Amazon.

Further to my post above, these seem to be described as bidet bowls now on Amazon.

For any doubters about the ability of a “ bum gun” to clean thoroughly please be assured that it does and I think probably better than paper. Mine has the ability to do a powerful “jet wash”. That would dislodge anything from anywhere. The power of the spray is adjustable from a pleasant trickle to a blast. I wouldn’t go back to paper now

I loathe quilted toilet paper.whoever invented it I wonder.

Just recently our toilet began blocking up.

But a friend gave us a good tip.

Douse the toilet bowl with fairy washing up liquid and then chuck a couple of buckets of water down. Then flush after.
And it works brilliantly. We do this now and again and where needed. Good advice because we were going to get a plumber in. No need to now, I’m pleased to say.

Yes Greciangirl that's how I cleared the blockage. It took several buckets but it cleared. I also filled the bath with water and let that out to flush through the underground drain pipe.

I will do as you suggest as well. Empty buckets of water after a dowsing of Fairy every so often. Hopefully it won't happen again.
