Good morning Mick and all GN's on a slightly breezy but dry and very cold morning in North Yorkshire. The sky is clear and I can see a couple of birds walking along the large branches of the tree. A happy mothering sunday to everyone, hope you have a lovely day and are able to be in touch with family everywhere.
Have of course been awake for a long time, but yet again woke with awful cramp and am still struggling. I am going to have to try and get a doctors appointment I think, as I cannot think of anything else I can do to cope with this and the worst is the lack of sleep. It affects so much else if you dont get some sleep. I have a split lip, which will not heal and just cant get rid of the cough either. Dont sound much and with people having to wait so long for an appointment have felt it unfair to take up an appointment for what sounds very trivial. I try to keep myself in the best way I can and know that these minor sounding things show me that I need to be careful as am likely to be vunerable to catching any bugs going round. If I get any other things it tends to upset my diabetic medication which I manage quite well normally.Well the way things are at the moment , by the time I get an appointment it all may have cleared up by itself. Hope so.
All my plans for yesterday were changed but for the better! I was expecting a friend to come and visit and was just trying to decide what to get out of the freezer when they rang and unfortunately were not well, so we cancelled the day and hope to get together later. That meant I had nothing planned and so thought it will be a day to catch up with things from my messed up week, get ironing done and paperwork etc etc. However the morning was brightening up and the forecast then said that they expected a sunny morning followed by heavy showers and very windy in the afternoon and worse to come for sunday. I decided that in that case I would get out in the sunshine and make the most of it.
Rang another friend to see what she was doing, as she lives alone and at the moment has no car. She also had plans to do jobs but they could easily be abandoned for the morning she said and so , of course , where was the place I love and always want to visit but Swaledale. She was very happy to go along with that and as she normally is on the bus only sees those routes and not the little roads and the wilder places that I tend to go to. I havent got my picnic box sorted and now the new buggy has to go in the boot of the car am having to work out how to use the back seat for coffee making etc, but hastily stuck mugs and all the coffee things with some crisps and my big polar jacket , mac and spare jumper to cover all eventualities into the back and off we went , stopping to get the Yorkshire Post on the way.
It was a perfect time to be out in the car. Sadly with all that wind and rain and poor weather, the countryside had rather reverted to winter mode. No sign of any catkins on the trees and most trees were winter bare with no sign of any green on hedges or bushes. I still love seeing all the different seasons and you can see the actual lovely outline of the trees in winter mode. Some were their own natural shape and others had obviously been pollarded in the past, or showed the prevalent wind direction by leaning to one side.
A lot of flooding in the fields but no major problem on the roads but rivers very high everywhere. The flood lake was back on the big field as we passed but no swan there as we passed by. We twisted and turned our way up minor roads through wensleydale and then up over the Buttertubs, with wonderful views everywhere. Snow over Penhill and many other places in the distance. Deceivingly lovely sunshine through the windows , yet if you opened the window or stopped to take a picture it was freezing outside and you were pleased to get back into the car.
Wonderful drive all the way up to Keld, seeing lapwings , pheasants, gulls and the wonderful haunting sound of the curlews that is so much part of the area. Heather had not been to some of the tiny byways and really enjoyed it. She is keen on mosses and lichens and in various places her phone came out to take good pictures of special kinds that we saw. We finally came to my very favourite place with views up and down the dale and with a bit of faffing about got a much needed and enjoyed coffee and sat enjoying everything, sheep, birds and with the occasional noisy motor bike passing by, but mostly local traffic and cyclists whizzing by to take the challenge of the buttertubs.
Despite the forecast, the sun stayed and the wind blew and we then set off down Swaledale, at our own pace, and I was able to point out the chapels we rehearsed in, footpaths through the meadows for later in the year and stopping for lovely views as we wanted. There was still a lot of flooding and standing water which shows how waterlogged the meadows are still. The weather still held and we stopped at the Bike place near fremington where they have a good cafe. It was of course extremely busy with not only the usual bikers but lots of families making it a good meeting place. I cant sit on a stool or chair with no back to it , and it was so full I had to ask two ladies if we might share their table and they were fine about it, so sat with much relief. Then we made our way home again via the little byways that I knew and avoided all the town centres and the weekend traffic. So a very happy day and we were so pleased we had gone and made the most of it.
Of course no fairies had been here doing the jobs I had slovenly left undone, so today I plan to stay in, catch up with some of the many jobs , enjoy my music and read more of the Yorkshire Post. I didnt get a card from my son in the post yesterday, but with the mess the post is in at the moment no doubt will get one next thursday!! I expect he will ring later on and we can catch up with family news. Am so glad we had such a lovely day yesterday and whilst I hope all families have a lovely get together it is not a day to try to go for sunday lunch anywhere. All I really want is not to have more flipping cramp today.!!
How nice for you to have your sister with you Mick and hope the weather stays dry for you. Hope you can have a good time with your family grandMattie and are able to get a doctors appointment soon. Marzipan, I am with you about avoiding crowds and am intrigued with the abandoned piano in the woods. Do tell more? Is it the latest in the awful flytipping epademic, or taken their for secret assignations between the pianist and a solo singer? Sounds intriguing , perhaps a british version of the islands where planes used to drop things , I think in the war, and the people believed that all these things were sent for them and watch the sky for more presents? Karmalady hope you enjoy your gentle day.
Today I look back on so many different Mothering sundays, from being so proud that I had made my mother a cup of tea by myself in my days as a brownie, to my sons lovely little homemade cards that I still have to remind me of those days, to one glorious sunny and windy day when we were able to go out on a first sailing of the year, and that wonderful feeling of the wind in your face and the sound of the water rippling by and the sails filling. I hope everyone can enjoy their day, whatever they are doing and remember happy times in the past with precious loved ones. Wishing you all a lovely day
