Who are these people?

It's not me or you but somebody is stuffing poo bags into the gaps in Hadrian's Wall.

Why? Who is it that has no sense of - I don't know what to call it - care for our history, our countryside? They want to walk somewhere nice but then spoil it for others. They must like the countryside as it is not a five minute stroll to give the dog a minimum of exercise.

I saw that on the news and was shocked.

Then thought, I'm beyond being shocked or surprised by how filthy and disgusting some people are, dumping poo bags anywhere, dropping litter, throwing it out of car windows and fly tipping in the countryside.
I'm just in despair.

What I wonder is who do these people think cleans up after them when they leave these 'poo bags' on Hadrian's Wall...... and so many other places too.

Georgesgran Thu 09-Apr-26 10:50:38

People like this think there’s a poo bag fairy! Northumbrian Water actually used to have ‘her’ on their tankers to ‘remind’ people she doesn’t exist.

Doodledog Thu 09-Apr-26 10:51:59

It's vile, isn't it?

Many poo bags are not degradable, which is in some ways another issue, but an important one, IMO. What's the point of picking up a degradable substance, putting it in a plastic bag and leaving it lying about?

Charleygirl5 Thu 09-Apr-26 10:54:10

I am amazed they used a bag. They wouldn't have transported it otherwise. Others leave it lying to rot. People no longer amaze me, that is disgusting.

they need to be shot

It's very unpleasant to tread in poo, but at least it is biodegradable!

I was wondering about building more prisons but we wouldn't need to if you were in charge 😀

I couldnt believe that someone had let what must have been a big dog poo at the entrance to a play area. I almost felt I should pick it up myself but didnt have a bag.

Someone walking past my house also let their dog poo on our gravel forecourt where we park the car. So I would have to step over it to get in the car. That I did have to pick up.
I am beginning to really dislike Joe Public.
As PP above says who do they think is going to clean up after them on Hadrians wall?

HelterSkelter1 Thu 09-Apr-26 11:01:37

Was it human poo or dog I wonder. I havent read the articlenyet.

So long as someone disposes of the bodies thoughtfully grin

Where are those ghosts of Roman legionaries who patrol Hadrian's Wall when you need them?
Not to clean up but to tell them to take their rubbish home with them.

My Latin is rusty but Heus tu, noli id ibi relinquere might make them jump out of their skins.

I remember reading about the amount of rubbish dumped at the top of Mount Everest. The Nepalese army have to go up and shift it every so often.

Sand pits had to be banned in children's playgrounds owing to the fact that people habitually dumped poo bags, condoms, fag ends and other disgusting rubbish into them.

Six to eight million pounds are spent yearly keeping British motorways and major roads safe and clear of dumped rubbish.

Who are these people who do all this?

ViceVersa Thu 09-Apr-26 11:23:41

This is a real bugbear of mine. Yes, I am a dog owner and I always pick up after him and if there is nowhere on our walk to dispose of the bags, I bring them home with me. I would never dream of leaving them - same with litter. People who do this or drop litter or dump unwanted items are just thoughtless and ignorant.

25Avalon Thu 09-Apr-26 11:44:27

Carrying a bag of stinky dog poo is not very pleasant so you leave the bag in a “safe” place intending to return and pick it up later but you forget. That’s the most charitable explanation. BUT mostly it’s ignorant, thoughtless people although they were thoughtful enough to buy the bags in the first place! Why would you do that? It’s one of life’s inexplicable mysteries.

Fallingstar Thu 09-Apr-26 11:53:09

We have poo bags put in our bins just outside our house or hung on tree branches of a local park.
I give up. Have no idea why dog owners do this I suppose is laziness and just a lack of consideration.
Tbh I feel the number of dogs has gone up substantially since Covid, certainly near us anyway.

AGAA4 Thu 09-Apr-26 11:55:08

It has got worse. The country park near where I live rarely had any dog poo left and there was no rubbish but for the last few years I have seen an array of coloured bags left on rocks or hanging in the trees. Drinks cans and other rubbish just thrown down.

I don't think these people think about who cleans it all up. As long as they are rid of it they don't care.

HelterSkelter1 Thu 09-Apr-26 11:56:41

I don't understand that either. To buy the bags and then leave them in walls, hung on trees etc etc. I dont expect there are dog poo bins along Hadrians wall, but just double wrap and take home or to wherever the car is parked where there probably is a bin. The same with all litter.
Everest is a disgrace. I did read that the Nepalese are increasing the price of ascents to cover the cost of the clear up. I must Google that and check the facts

I have just been doing a bit of weeding and tidying in my front garden.
I have forsythia bush in full bloom which somebody thought would look nicer if they stuck a McDonalds box into it.

There is not a McDonalds anywhere near where I live so I am not sure how it made it's journey.

I think some of the the attitude is (being charitable here) that someone is paid to clean it up so why should they...

About 10 years ago I was helping to clear the garden of a large institution which had been empty for some years. Locals had easy access to the gardens and it was well used for dog walking. We had to remove a great many empty poo bags; the contents had rotted but the bags remained.

Quite honestly, I'd rather that the dog poo was just kicked or thrown into the undergrowth where there is some, to rot quietly without trace. Not in urban areas, of course, but in the countryside.

It's a difficult subject though. At least everywhere is, on the whole, much cleaner because most dog owners do pick up after their animals. You notice it if you go abroad to somewhere where people don't pick up. But the plastic lasts for years and years, even if its contents don't; it's not very environmentally friendly.

Gwyllt Thu 09-Apr-26 12:13:54

I don’t know if it the same now but when I lived near Delamare Forest in Cheshire. Noticed used to say “get a stick and flick “ I guess it was thought better to clear it off the paths and not have plastic left in the environment

Yes somebody does pay for it to be collected - you and me in our Council Tax!

Not the ones hanging in the bushes and hedges on farmland!

And I'm perfectly happy with my council tax paying for the provision of bins and the emptying of them.
