Sometimes the smallest thing can stop you in your tracks
This from today’s issue of The Times of 1926

The Press Association is officially informed that Her Royal Highness the Duchess of York was safely delivered of a Princess at 2.40 this morning. Both mother and daughter are doing well

The Queen Mother was not very lovable.

You were not alive during the war, presumably.

Allira Tue 21-Apr-26 22:13:42

Well done, Queen Elizabeth, Queen Mother, you did well 100 years ago 🍸

And your daughter did us proud.

Queen Elizabeth (later the Queen Mother) was Queen Consort to George VI. She was referred to as Queen Elizabeth, whereas her daughter was The Queen
Queen Elizabeth II was Queen Regnant

Sorry, RosiesMawagain, I completely misread your post.

There’s always somebody ready to rain on any parade ☔️

Then don’t publicise your parade Rosie or of course you will get divided opinion
Anyway you rained on Anniebach post picking her up on her vocabulary so ‘horses for courses’

The QueenQueen Elizabeth II was Queen Regnant

I thought that said Queen Pregnant 🤣🤣🤣

Queen Elizabeth has been part of our lives for so long that any time “the Queen” is mentioned I can only visualise her. I’ve just got used to saying “the King”.

My grandmother was not a fan. She said that QM, she was quite wild as a young socialite, and at the time, set her cap at him, not his brother, because she wanted royalty but not responsibility. But she clearly loved him though.

But I saw her hand in stopping Charles seeing Camilla when they were young, and pushing him towards Diana later as a suitable virgin.

Think she might have had something to do with splitting Andrew and Sarah

Those words are from Princess Elizabeth's 21st birthday speech.

It's high time this country became a republic.

I have visions of the baby Elizabeth being born sporting a a teeny tiny tiara! 👑

As a small child I imagined the Queen lying very tidily in bed, on her back, arms straight down at her sides - with her crown on! 😂

Like the US of A.

Look how well that's going 😁

I don't think Charles will reign for long. IMO he looks ill. I'd give him a couple of years at the most. I've always liked him.

We tried that once before and look how that went.

Hope Charles (or Camilla) don’t read GN.

With the best will in the world Charles is not going to reign anywhere near as long as QEII ie over 70 years. He was born in November 1948 so he will be 78 this year.

TheSunRisesInTheEast Wed 22-Apr-26 19:29:03

He waited for years to be king, it's very sad that he has been blighted with ill health the last couple of years. We haven't seen as much of him as you might expect from The King. William has grown into a fine man and I have every confidence in him to take over the role when his time comes. Catherine will be the perfect Queen 👑.

Jaxjacky Wed 22-Apr-26 19:57:30

I respected Queen Elizabeth as I do any venerable institution, but I like Queen Camilla, shame she and King Charles took over ‘the shop’ as late as they did.

Janetashbolt Wed 22-Apr-26 19:57:35

Same day as my Dad ws born, no longer with us though

Norah Wed 22-Apr-26 19:59:51

Pray he has a silver jubilee of his reign.

TheSunRisesInTheEast Wed 22-Apr-26 20:05:53

25 years? Sadly, that's very unlikely 😕.

Whenever it is suggested that the concept of monarchy is outdated and a throwback to serfdom, someone points to Donald Trump as an example of what can happen if we had a presidency.

Why not point to past and present monarchs whose behaviour may not be considered to be very desirable? And I believe that in Thailand it is a crime to criticise the king.

The point is there are good and bad monarchs, as there are good and bad presidents.

However, I do believe that many older people in the UK (and overseas, as has been mentioned) have been conditioned to see our royal family as somehow superior to their "subjects", despite the fact that, generally speaking, they do not appear to be morally or intellectually better than the rest of us. I think their inbuilt privileged position in British society is totally incompatible with the concept of justice and equality. Though there are many examples of our system being far from equal and fair, to me the monarchy embodies the notion of inborn superiority.

Ive only got time for Sophie and Ann, they get on with their "work" without fuss or fanfare-no interest in any of the others. I did have a fascination for Diana though, she will always be the only Princess of Wales, as far as I'm concerned!
