How do you hang your washing out?

I've always hung tops from the bottom and trousers etc from the waist but I went to a relative's at the weekend and she hung shirts and tops from the shoulders, which I thought was unusual.

My MiL implied I was a slut because I hung sheets over the line not the ends on the line!
I dry things together, pairing sock as I go along. Trousers hung from the hem, but jeans from the waist. T-shirts from the bottom but proper shirts are pegged with the collar over the line.
I never leave pegs on the line because, if they are wood, they never dry properly, if they are plastic, they break from exposure to sunlight.

However my washing is hung on my retractable line across my patio it annoys the gulls and wood pigeons who remove pegs and drop my knickers on the steps!

Trousers from waist, tops bottom up and on the seam

With pegs

Moth62 Tue 28-Apr-26 07:28:35

I always take the pegs in with the washing, but my DH leaves them out, grr 😡 My mum always thought it was “common” to leave pegs on the line smile

BlueBelle Tue 28-Apr-26 07:36:16

I leave mine out on the line too probably laziness but heyho it’s only a peg

Tops by the bottom, bottoms by the top - although if it's something thick, I will usually switch it around to let the sun get at both sides. I also hang things in batches - trousers all together, tops all together and so on - and pegs have to match. I always take the pegs in afterwards though.

Well, I'm not neurodivergent, of course, but it would trouble me if the pegs on each side of my rotary washing line were not the same colour..

I don't hang washing out any more. I have a rack in the utility room which I use all the time. I take stuff down when I feel like it not when it's dry or when it rains.

When I realised I was a peg controller I threw caution to the wind and tried to randomise my pegging. I now find I honor my best tops or towels with the nicest coloured pegs!
As a young mum I was once loudly berated by a neighbour for pegging out washing on a Sundaygrin

TheSunRisesInTheEast Tue 28-Apr-26 09:13:35

Definitely put them away, Puss! 😄.

Grannybags Tue 28-Apr-26 09:32:30

Oh yes definitely put pegs away - I'm not a slut!!

When my youngest son was still living at home I couldn't bring myself to use red pegs on his clothes as he's an Everton supporter (blue)! He knew nothing about this

Hate pegs left on the line. I also dry towels longways (landscape) someone told me years ago that they dry quicker?

shysal Tue 28-Apr-26 09:52:03

Tops from under the arms and trousers from the waist.

What about the pegs? I found I was wanting to always use a matching pair on each garment, but there weren't always enough of each colour. I therefore bought some packs of all the same (yellow) to spare me the anxiety! smile

Pegs in the peg bag and away in the shed with the line when not in use.

But a peg is not just a peg is it? We have discussions here about which pegs are best - some have too big a gap and so things slide around on the line. DH has very clear views on ‘good’ pegs.
Wooden pegs are used for all sorts of jobs indoors, mostly sealing packets of stuff (flour, sugar) in the kitchen but also holding plant labels, as book marks, holding up the indoor fairy light….
Such a useful invention.

I always used to take the pegs in, but if dh gets the washing in ( he can run faster than me if the heavens open) he leaves the pegs behind. At first I would run back out in the rain and collect them. Now I leave them in place- and yes a few have fallen apart.
I peg most things to avoid ironing. Tee shirts hung from the bottom, blouses on hangers, trousers from the waist. Socks in pairs. Dh if he pegs out a top will often peg it from the shoulders, and jeans from the ankles. I keep quiet!
In our previous house we had a retractable washing line which was easy to wipe down before each use. I struggle to wipe the rotary lines down now- there seems so much of it and it’s a reach. Has anyone come up with an innovative method?

keepcalmandcavachon Tue 28-Apr-26 10:36:21

I take my rotary line down and put it behind the shed after it's done it's bit as well as putting the pegs in the peg apron that I wear.
And, if I can't be botherer to take off my house pinny beforehand I'll end up wearing bothgrin.

I recognise a few of your oddities here in myself 🤣🤣

Trousers from the bottom, 2 pegs per leg.
Tops from the bottom. Smalls on an airer without pegs. So much quicker to put out and to get in if it starts to rain.

Coops74 Tue 28-Apr-26 11:08:00

I always hang trousers from the legs and shirts and T-shirts from the bottom. My daughter hangs hers the other way around so when she is not looking I rearrange them.!!

keepcalmandcavachon Tue 28-Apr-26 11:52:28

Do you think we need a support group chums?grin

midgey Tue 28-Apr-26 11:58:18

My daughter leaves her washing out overnight…..I have tried and tried to teach her the dangers of washing getting ‘darker’ on……☹️

midgey Tue 28-Apr-26 11:59:10

‘Darker’ obviously!

Tenko Tue 28-Apr-26 12:38:41

Puss

What about pegs do you put them away or keep them on the line?

I put them away . My DH leaves them on the line

Moth62 Tue 28-Apr-26 12:44:59

Only in the direst of circumstances (and maybe not even then) would my mother have put out washing on a Sunday. Brought up strict chapel by her granny.
