I've always hung tops from the bottom and trousers etc from the waist but I went to a relative's at the weekend and she hung shirts and tops from the shoulders, which I thought was unusual.
Trousers from the waist and tops pegged at the bottom. Each item MUST have two pegs the same colour, but the next item on the line must have two pegs in a different colour from its neighbours. Pegs never left on the line. On the rare occasions DH puts the washing out he never follows the rules and I have to wait until he isnt looking to go and change all the pegs around so they are in the 'right' place.
Undies and socks stay on an airer in the conservatory. Clothing on hangers on the line, the lightest on the inside. If (when - we live by the coast) it’s windy most of the creases are blown away. Mr C has a totally different, chaotic, system devoid of hangers. I try not to look.
I always used to take the pegs in, but if dh gets the washing in ( he can run faster than me if the heavens open) he leaves the pegs behind. At first I would run back out in the rain and collect them. Now I leave them in place- and yes a few have fallen apart. I peg most things to avoid ironing. Tee shirts hung from the bottom, blouses on hangers, trousers from the waist. Socks in pairs. Dh if he pegs out a top will often peg it from the shoulders, and jeans from the ankles. I keep quiet! In our previous house we had a retractable washing line which was easy to wipe down before each use. I struggle to wipe the rotary lines down now- there seems so much of it and it’s a reach. Has anyone come up with an innovative method?
Fold it down and put a cover on it and you do not need to wipe it. I do this after every use. My pegs go in the garage.
I did the same as you for many years. Then I discovered that if I hung tops from the shoulders (neatly) the sleeves and collars dried better and the tops came off the line as though they’d been ironed. I hang trousers from the waist. Again, I hang them neatly, flattening out any creases and any other bumps with my hand, so they too come off the line crease-less and drier at the top (waistband) than when hung the other way. Consequently, I threw out my iron and ironing board years ago!
I’m definitely with the majority with trousers from waistband and tops from the bottom ( I don’t like the crease from the line across the chest area ) I also do t like my underwear out on the line so mostly it’s tumbled although if it’s a very good drying day I will use a gadget that you hang multiple small items from and hang that on the line so that it’s no obviously my knickers !
How do you take it off the line though? Sometimes I go along and take one peg off each but how ever I do it I always fold it and place it flat in the basket to carry inside except maybe towels which I just drop into the basket and fold inside.

I have two bags, one for ironing and one for just put away- towels, underwear etc. In cold weather I just tossed things into the requisite bags. In warm weather, I fold them as I take them off the line.
My daughter and I always claim not to be neurodivergent in spite of if affecting most of the family, but when she showed me a photo of the school football strip hanging up to dry, she was worrying because she'd got the numbers in the wrong order and I was worrying because she'd hung them upside down!
Jennifer Eccles Oh me too. I do miss the sight of Terry nappies drying in the line. When my DF and DDin L were pregnant I volunteered to washed all the baby things in preparation. It saved them time and gave me great joy 🥰
On a line using clothes pegs, which just as the whirligig line gets closed against the wall and covered when not in use, so the caddy with the clothes pegs comes in, to keep them clean and dry.
My son's work trousers have Velcro on the back pockets and he grabbed them out of the airing cupboard one morning, probably rushing as usual at 6.30am.
When he got to work, he couldn't understand why his workmates were sniggering, pointing at him and nudging one another.
He then discovered that he had a pair of my big black knickers hanging from the Velcro on the back of his trousers 😂🤣. They obviously got stuck on them in the airing cupboard and he hadn't noticed them. He felt so embarrassed and put them in the bin 😱😂.
