A Swell Idea From ASDA To Deter Shoplifters!

Sainsburies, at the branch I used to use regularly, printed a code on your till slip and you just showed it to a pad on an automativ gate as you walked out. I think the out of town Lidl where I live now does the same.

All security has to do is watch those trying to get out via the entry gate.

If it works, prices may be lowered after time.

does that mean a receipt for each item or one for all the shopping? if the latter surely people will still hide goods and only pay for some as they would still get a receipt for the honest goods they have bought.

It’s a shame it has come to this.
Went to buy a decent knife set at Tkmax, only to be told they now don’t sell them. Had to trail to another town miles away (homesense) to buy a knive set.
Now all in glass cases. You get a ticket & the shop assistant takes it to the till for you. Later you present the ticket & pick up the knife, knife set.
They stopped selling knives at tks as they didn’t have enough staff, plus, from a safety aspect from a knife attacks.
I should have just shopped online.

Some shops like K mart and Costco make you show the receipt on the way out and they tick off the number of items you have in your trolley or bag. Gets a bit slow at Christmas but they put extra staff on on checkout duty.

The OP said this was for the most commonly shoplifted items, so it is less likely that other items would be hidden, isn’t it?

It obviously wouldn’t completely eliminate shop lifting but it might help.

OTOH, how many frustrated honest customers would it drive away to less stringent shops?

MT62. If knives are purchased online you have to do a security check which includes a 'selfie'. I've recently purchased cutlery from John Lewis and had to do this. You need to have registered your date of birth with them before you start.

Cossy, I fully agree with you, but sadly, now, store detectives/security aren't even allowed to LOOK at a ''suspect'' without them being accused of all kinds of harassment, etc. against people of all kinds of genders, ages, backgrounds and so on!

Long gone are the days when they could leap on the lifters and physically restrain them!

My friend Stan is now 80, 6'4 tall and well built. He spent quite a few years as a copper and regularly had to help store detectives/security to physically handle store troublemakers, but if they tried that now, the cops/security would be done for assault or whatever!

We had a real scam going on, certain groups of people would go in the Asda store. They both buy the same identical items. One goes through the till, the other waits till that person is through.
The other pushes his trolly through the door, but before he does, the other person gives his receipt to that person in case he’s stopped.
I’ve noticed now asda have put barriers up so that you can only go in one direction.
Security can only ask if they have paid, & then they are waved on.

I alway make sure I take a bag, or buy a bag & always ask for my receipt as I don’t like that feeling of walking out as though I haven’t paid for my goods.

Many years ago at my local Asda thieves would buy something small like a box of matches from the kiosk then go into the shop, pick up a tv, and wave the receipt for the matches at security on the way out!

I've noticed at my Sainsbury's when someone sets off the alarm at the door security just let them go without checking their baskets or receipt

At a recently opened Primark I visited, there's a a gate at the till exit area which only opens when you put your receipt in the appropriate place. Seems like a great and easy method, but of course only works if you actually go through the till area!

Would the gate open if you had three things in your bag and a receipt for only one thing though... 🤔

We found this on holiday. No exit without payment receipt which could be checked by a doorman. Seemed straightforward.

They say they have hidden cameras in the stores. Is there any point? Does the staff even bother to watch?
Easter I saw this bloke in M & S pick up two pieces of lamb & walk past the security guard. I said to the guard you know that guy hast just stolen some meat. He said I know but we aren’t allowed to tackle them.

Waitrose no longer sells kitchen knives. I went into our little wool and haberdashery shop, chose some scissors and, passing the door to reach the threads, an alarm sounded. The manager said this was so she could verify a customer’s age. I’m 81, which is probably about the average age of their customers!

Who remembers queuing in shops, chatting to others in the queue, being served by an assistant, a brief chat, paying and then home again. Used to go daily to the shops with my mother and remember it well.

I once did my full weekly shop for a family of 6 at Waitrose after work on a hot Friday late afternoon. Went through checkout to find my debit card was not in my purse. The checkout supervisor told me to just take my heaving trolley load home, she kept the receipt, and come back with my card. Needless to say more than 2 decades on I remain a faithful customer.
