A Swell Idea From ASDA To Deter Shoplifters!

According to The Mirror the method currently being trialled (re most often nicked items) goes thus:

Select item on vending machine Touch Screen. Obtain coded receipt and take it to a checkout. Pay for item. Then you'll be issued another receipt. Take second receipt back to vending machine to release required item. Voila!

What could be simpler? What could possibly go wrong?

This will doubtless make shoplifters think twice. And potential customers who may opt to stay home, order online and preserve their sanity. And blood pressure.

It’s a shame it has come to this.
Went to buy a decent knife set at Tkmax, only to be told they now don’t sell them. Had to trail to another town miles away (homesense) to buy a knive set.
Now all in glass cases. You get a ticket & the shop assistant takes it to the till for you. Later you present the ticket & pick up the knife, knife set.
They stopped selling knives at tks as they didn’t have enough staff, plus, from a safety aspect from a knife attacks.
I should have just shopped online.

I tried to buy some small hack saw blades on ebay to go along with the other decorating items I was buying. They were just to shorten a blind I was purchasing . They don't sell them online now because they are a blade. It would take a lot of time , effort and sawing to cause any damage to a person. So sad (and annoying )that they had to stop online sales. Same as trying to buy decent painkillers online . I tried to buy a few of boxes of 75mg enteric coated asprin online I was only allowed 2 because of risk I was buying them to take all together. Sad, sad sign of the times.

Which is what a lot using them for crime do

I very much doubt that prices will go down

Sainsburies, at the branch I used to use regularly, printed a code on your till slip and you just showed it to a pad on an automativ gate as you walked out. I think the out of town Lidl where I live now does the same.

All security has to do is watch those trying to get out via the entry gate.

Not heard about this before.Sounds like a good idea. Maybe some stores would have changed their entrance and exit door arrangements. Easily fixed.

Not seen it in my local Sainsbury. But will mention it to them on my next visit.

Btw whatever happened to store detectives?

Good question!

I saw a woman filling her shopping bag with pieces of meat in M & S last week. By the time I’d told a member of staff, she was walking out the door. The staff member went after her. When she came back in, she said that she’d told the woman to never come back to the shop. This is a food store only. I’ve never seen a security person there. Not that we should need them, of course, and if there’s nothing they can do, I suppose it’s pointless.

With the instructions to security personnel not to challenge shoplifters there will have to be some sorts of screening introduced to limit theft. Lidl near me has the gate that opens once self service receipt has
been scanned.

I stood waiting while a man was looking through steaks in my local Sainsbury's. He suddenly opened a large bag and emptied every steak into it and legged it out the door. I was stunned and told a member of staff. They simply shrugged and said it happens all the time!
I was doubly annoyed because I very rarely buy it and it was a birthday treat!

They say they have hidden cameras in the stores. Is there any point? Does the staff even bother to watch?
Easter I saw this bloke in M & S pick up two pieces of lamb & walk past the security guard. I said to the guard you know that guy hast just stolen some meat. He said I know but we aren’t allowed to tackle them.

I used to work for M&S. We had a cctv room with someone watching cameras all day. If we saw something dodgy or someone we knew was a wrong un we would contact them to watch a particular area. Then they centralised it and we couldn’t ring as it was happening, just ask them to save the footage for the time, if they could see something.

As the store detectives or what ever they call them now, are not allowed to challenge anyone, why would they waste a wage employing them, paying them to do nothing.

Allsorts Thu 07-May-26 19:12:51

Stop the no receipt option and make sure everyone has a bag. Find M abd S the worst. .Show receipt on the way out of the shop. If the customer says they didn't get one it is easy checking the till roll. Put a big sign up on entering the store stating new requirements of using the store. .

I just want to do some shopping, that's going to add time and effort that most people don't have or want.
If I went into a shop and they wanted me to go back and forth to buy some milk I'd leave and go the the shop that allows me to buy my shopping without the extra faff.

I use the smart shop handsets in Sainsbury's and have to then wave the receipt to open the gate to get out. They also still check a random number of shoppers by rescanning the trolley so I don't pack my shopping in my bags until after I've paid. Fortunately I mostly do quite small shops frequently so it works for me.
One day I was struggling at the checkout as I counted the items in my trolley to check I'd scanned everything and realised I'd missed 2 items so was trying to work out which. An assistant asked what was wrong and when I explained she helped me check and we identified the banana and carrot I'd had to weigh and then forgot to scan. When I then proceeded to pay, the till picked me for a random check. We both burst out laughing as the assistant then had to rescan my shopping knowing already thet I was certainly no sshoplifter!
I'm all in favour of any measures to reduce shoplifting as a smal inconvenience at the checkout will eventually reduce prices for honest customers. However I did get caught out in Lidl as I went to a branch with the geted exits, not my usual branch and they didn't have what \i went for so I didn't buy anything. I had trouble getting out and had to 'tailgate' someone who had paid!

In my local Sainsbury's the alarm goes off as almost everyone leaves. No one takes any notice!

Isla71 Fri 08-May-26 02:49:06

I really dread going shopping now. Going thro express tills, I did all the right things but exit barriers wouldn't open and AI voice loudly repeating "cannot exit until goods paid for" . Three of us waiting to "escape". Turned out that there was a computer failure on tills. Beggared if you do, and even beggared if you dont!

Would the gate open if you had three things in your bag and a receipt for only one thing though... 🤔

Precisely. Self checkout scam I watched. Tap yes to own bag. Place bag with lighter item into bagging area. Shop other items and pay, then pick up bag and pretend to re-arrange while adding a few more. You have a valid receipt for most of your shop and the checker who is watching 8 tills or more sees nothing

Cossy, I think detectives are no longer used in most stores. I'm not being sarcastic when I say this is probably because they risk being sacked if they approach or cause upset the thief.
