Why don’t men shave any more?

I have just looked at a video on You Tube, and all of the men ( all over 50) have what I believe is called ‘designer stubble’. Does anyone find this look attractive?
Even Paul McCartney, whom I have loved since I was 11, is sporting an unshaven chin.
Do they really believe it looks good?

George Michael was shaven - just not clean-shaven.

I quite like beards but I do think it they tend to make quite different-looking people look similar.

Good point. Very Samish. Joint the game. Be one of us.

Bring back well tended moustaches and clipped Van Dyke beards.

My preference is clean shaven.

A few years back I read a piece in the Daily Telegraph about a woman who ran a shop and refused to serve men with beards.

How lucky she could afford to do that.

Was she happy to serve women with beards?

Yes. Fur.

Beards - it entirely depends on the individual. Grumpa I'm sure you look fab.

Just any gents reading - trim those ears, nose, please.

Many years ago, when our children were very young, DH had one of those Zappa moustaches. One day he came down in the morning with two fingers held beneath his nose.He removed them and he had shaved off his moustache. My son screamed and my daughter burst into tears. He wasn’t their Daddy. He grew it back and it turned into a beard, which he has had ever since .

Beards are just ghastly in my opinion.

Once men are older and grey, with beards, they all look alike.
I have three neighbours that fit this bill, I never know which one I’m waving at.DP calls it the Corbyn Effect.

Not shaving makes a man look scruffy, especially when beards contain a grey mix. I always imagine particles from air or food can get trapped in beards and moustaches. Makes me cringe.

i like clean shaven although i understand why men don't want the hassle of doing it everyday.

I like a well kept moustache and beard ,but I dislike designer stubble.

Welcome to my world, where most people look the same whether they have beards or not.
In fact, I seem to be better at recognising people - both men and women - who have a 'natural' look, rather than being trimmed/ coloured/ straightened/ shaved according to the latest 'trend' in a way that to me makes them indistinguishable from one another.

Surely not, I don’t envisage David Beckham ever looking like Uncle Albert Oreo, and my neighbours sadly don’t sport a beard as well as George Clooney does.

Oreo Thu 02-Jul-26 21:49:15

Funnily enough I rarely seem to bump into David Beckham😄
But the men I do see look more like Jeremy Corbyn than Uncle Albert. Indistinguishable unless up really close, even then I have to go more on teeth and eye colour to get it right.

MissAdventure Thu 02-Jul-26 22:22:07

Mr. Beckham.

Did you take that pic while he was round your place tonight?

Wyllow3 Thu 02-Jul-26 22:24:41

There is designer stubble, which is carefully tended to, shape wise (unless the bloke is really lucky) and just not bothering at all, which can look grotty.

When I come to think of it, why should men "have" to be clean shaven to the last degree? whether they are clean shaven, partly shaven, beards, whatever, isn't it all a cultural "of its time" thingy?

Like in the 80's, many women had curled and blown up perms gigantic styles to be "in", and now they all use straighteners to be "in".

He insisted.
It seemed churlish not to. wink
He's rather photogenic, isn't he?

Oreo Thu 02-Jul-26 22:27:16

Apparently Roman soldiers were clean shaven with short haircuts, I love a man in uniform.
