Halal and Kosher meat should labelling be mandatory?

I'm sure I read somewhere that all meat used in state school kitchens is now kosher slaughtered. I sincerely hope I'm wrong.

It certainly would be Halal at my grandchildren's primary, at least half of the pupils are moslem.

83% of abattoirs are halal certified. You are eating it everyday. Schools and hospitals serve halal only. Always look at the slaughter code beginning with GB, in Sainsburys, M&S etc the only chicken from non halal slaughter houses are the free range or organic ones. People haven’t got a clue about how rife it is. Also learn about the way it’s stunned, most is just pre stunned so the animal can come back to life while the blood drains from it. We need fully stunned animals only in the UK.

None of my Jewish or Muslim friends would dream of being meat that was not certified as being slaughtered according to their religious requirements, so I am surprised that this problem can crop up.

Regardless of how an animal is slaughter, no animal can approach a slaughterhouse without smelling the blood, and probably the smell of death as well.

So in my opinion, anyone who, as I do myself, eats meat, but starts fussing about how the animal was actually slaughtered is displaying either a remarkable lack of knowledge about slaughter-houses, or displaying a moral double standard.

As I say ad nauseum, I only buy British reared, 'Pasture for Life' meat. 100% grass reared on unimproved pasture rich in species and slaughtered in a humane way.

I agree that all meat should be labelled, then we can choose whether we buy.

You are completely right AuntieE the reason I stopped eating flesh of any kind.

Monica with respect not everyone can afford that meat as I believe it is more expensive.

I live in a multi cultural town and the meat is labelled as Halal, it's quite obvious even in our local tesco

Yes, it should be labelled as clear as day, so yhat people can decide what they will/won't eat.

I usually plump for pork.

If you are concerned then go to your local butcher (they are sometimes cheaper than supermarkets & sourced locally)!
Supermarket meat is labelled. Halal & kosher are stocked in separate cabinets from other meats (which are not always UK or better reared)!
The worst meats are American imports! Filled with all sorts.

If you are so concerned shop at your local butcher and ask the origins! Usually locally sourced if it’s a good butcher

They're not kept separately in any supermarket I've been to.
Perhaps I go to the "wrong" ones.

ALL animals should be fully stunned first. How did we get to the point in this country that it is okay not for this to be the case? We have animal protection laws don’t we? It as soon as a minority group start shouting they want to be above the law we allow it? This is so very wrong imo.

If you buy from a butcher it is not guaranteed non halal as the meat comes from the slaughter house not the butcher and a lot of slaughter houses are both. If you ask and they tell you it's stunned still be wary as some stunning is reversable and this is how they get round it.

Kosher meat has been available for over a century,it’s not new and has not been an issue.Its only since people became aware that Muslims use a similar method it has become a problem…funny that!
As posted above there are no slaughterhouses in Scotland that kill without stunning first .

Looks like a veggie dinner for me, today.

When we were going to have that deal with the USA about chlorinated chicken, people here wanted it labelled, but the USA didn't. We can't really have different standards, either all labelled or none.
( Hallal meat is in a separate section in my local supermarket)

I've honestly never seen it, here.
I suppose it depends on peoples' reasons for not wanting to eat halal, whether it's labelled, or not wanting to eat chlorinated meat.

Yes absolutely! I have been so shocked and disgusted that most of our meat is halal.
It is very cruel and an awful way for animals to be slaughtered. I am not against any religion, however I do have strong views on the animal welfare in U.K. and how it is overlooked now, not labelled and most people do not even know that almost all meat now is slaughtered like this. Animals have become just a product we eat, watch a halal slaughter and decide for yourself, even a stunned slaughter is terrifying for the animal. I’m not against eating meat, however if more people are aware and clear labels are used, less of the animals would be so cruelly slaughtered.

Stunning does not mean that animals do not suffer. Animals hear the distress of other animals . Pigs are gassed or electrocuted - not a quick death. Day old male chicks are shredded when alive . I believe that stunning is required for lobsters before being boiled alive., but do they really not feel pain?
I lived near a farm and the sheep cried non stop for nearly 48 hours when the lambs were removed.
