I’ve heard it all now. An online jewellery auction described a piece of gold jewellery as having ‘ nine carrots’. Made me laugh.

And why do I suspect this may not have been a mistake?

Bellanonna Mon 07-Sept-26 12:18:44

I bet it wasnt! Too tempting 😀

Years ago, visiting my housebound ma-in-law, she asked me to pop to the corner shop for a few bits & pieces. On her list was written "2 scraps cards" and "1 pint semi-skilled milk".

Sorry, they were malapropisms rather than spelling errors, but funny all the same... Is there a malapropisms thread? I could fill it with Ma's clangers.

I’ve posted this before. Corjets on a market stall.

I wonder if they had Unterjeans as well?

As a Germanist, I really had to think about this!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

And a History teacher at a rather posh girls’ school told me how her head was in her hands when she read a Sixth form student’s Russian History coursework with repeated reference to Starling 🦅

Was he any relation to Lennon? wink

ViceVersa you really made me laugh, good job I hadn’t just taken a gulp of my coffee 😂

Seen on MN some time ago, an unfortunate woman was complaining about her ‘anal fishers’ 😲

MissAdventure Mon 07-Sept-26 14:28:40

Wonder what they were fishing for? shock

I got shot down in flames (not here) when I suggested that a comment about the then Crown Princess of Norway, that she was very emphatic towards her mother in law, Queen Sonia, should perhaps have read “empathic,”or “empathetic” 🫪🫪🫪

I remember my dear late brother in law telling me about a dog he’d seen that was out of control in the park. “It was going absolutely bearsick!” he said.

I once made a spelling mistake on here and someone commented with a ‘😂’ - can that person remind me what the word was ? Seriously, I can’t remember ….

I've no idea what's going on with my phone, my brain, my fingers, these days, but I write whole sentences of gobbledegook. smile

Bellanonna Thu 10-Sept-26 21:50:24

Always amusing and very sane gobbledegook though,

Most spell checkers now seems to be programmed by people who learned to read and write in the Sixties with the ITA.

You know the Initial Teaching Alphabet. Where words were spelt the way they sounded. Edukashun for Education.

On a market stall one year selling seasonal items a handwritten card saying "Christma's Card's.

I once saw a Mother’s Day card for sale which read, ‘If Mum’s were flowers, I’d pick you!

Why did they think the apostrophe was needed in the one plural, but not in the other?? And how did nobody else notice before it went to print, and out for sale in shops?

One of life’s great mysteries….

Bellanonna Sun 13-Sept-26 11:39:44

Lots of similar examples on TAPS (Apostrophe Protection Society), Witzend
