Things that (sometimes unreasonably) get on your nerves...hopefully lighthearted

I was watching the gardening programme on BBC2 this morning and suddenly got immensely irritated by the presenter, in the blazing sunshine, going on with himself along the lines of "...I'm already thinking about Autumn/Winter".

I know gardens take a lot of advance planning but it seems on every gardening programme no one seems to take the time out to just enjoy the moment, always looking ahead to the next job, the next bout of hard labour.

What gets your goat?

Flippinheck (love your name). I just get up and firmly say “I must get on” moving towards the door.

People who use the dog walking field nextdoor to us and walk right next to our hedge talking at full volume. I'm very tempted to join in the conversation at times.

I'm female, aged 61, and 6'2 tall and 11 stone, aged 13 I was 5'10, being tall and skinny doesn't bother me in the slightest, but I get SEROIOUSLY annoyed when, regularly total strangers say ''You're tall for a woman'', Urm, so? Would you tell a 5 ft tall man ''You're short for a bloke'' and expect him to just take it?

Yesterday when in a shop I'd never been into before the old trout behind the counter said ''Wow, you're tall for a woman, how tall are you?'' and I snapped ''And you're stupid for a witch, where were you when nature was handing out intelligence?!'' Then I walked out! Without buying anything!

A 6'2 man? Nobody bats an eyelash, but a woman of that height? A circus freak!

how massive the gardens are on these gardening programs

Men (it’s always men!) doing incredibly noisy, splashy front crawls at the pool I use.
I always think, possibly wrongly, that they’re showing off.

Maybe they don’t realise that truly competent front crawlers make far less splashy noise.

People who have their dogs on those long leads, in town centres or busy streets, yet dont shorten them. Not the dogs fault but when owners look in shop windows and dog goes to other side of path a hazard. Made worse on market day, with stalls meaning paths are quite crowded.

Those walking along, eyes glued to their phones, not looking where they are going.

I get annoyed when anyone "tells" me what to do when I perfectly well know the procedure. Its always a man. They usually get a sharp response "You are not my parent, my manager or my boss. OK?"

Delivered in my best teacher voice.

I agree with most on here, and could probably write a list of another few dozen. And here I thought I was easy-going too!

Lathyrus3 Mon 10-Aug-26 12:40:20

Yes Witzend. Not just men though mostly who ignore the marked out lanes and determinedly front crawl up and down the marked out Social Swimming section. They plough through the splashing children, slower swimmers and yes, the two women having a chat as they swim 😬

Programmes that show what's going to happen in the show in the intro .
People on phones talking loudly.

Yes, about the programmes showing you what it is about in advance. I have noticed that they do this on the Antiques Roadshow and on Sewing Bee now. I appreciate it is to entice people to watch but I find it very annoying.

People putting you on speaker phone without asking/telling you first. People on speaker phones generally.

And people standing around talking in the supermarket aisle. People in the supermarket cashier aisle (not the self service ones) who wait to hear what they owe and then rummage in their bag for their purse/card/whatever. Were they not expecting to have to pay. This doesn't bother me so much if I am not in a rush, but if I am and there is also a long queue, I find it very annoying.

Witzend Mon 10-Aug-26 13:31:59

Particularly since I witnessed it just the other day (not for the first time) someone cutting off and so wasting the top third of a strawberry, instead of just pulling the green stalk out.

Witzend Mon 10-Aug-26 13:36:39

Partly prompted by another thread (sorry) those busy busy busy people who tell you (as if it’s a virtue) that they haven’t sat down all day.

Watching TV and on comes the Simplicity Cremations jingle - not something I want to be constantly reminded about, particularly with that happy song!!

nanna8 Mon 10-Aug-26 13:44:09

Packages that are so firmly sealed you have to get scissors to open them. Aldi is good at this and whilst I’m at it the writing that appears on this site coming from what the tv is saying because I accidentally pressed the microphone button on my iPad.

People who walk along the street carrying coffee in covered beakers. Their intention to imply, "I'm so busy and important, I don't have time to stop". When one of the MPs going in to see the PM on his first day in office, walked along Downing Street doing this, I was forced to rethink my voting intentions 😁 What, in the name of all that's holy, makes someone think that this is acceptable in a politician?

Frequent visitor to neighbour who sits in car outside their gate blowing car horn for several minutes on end until someone opens gate for them - there is a key pad and intercom system why don't they get out of car and use it?

Romola Mon 10-Aug-26 13:53:44

When I'm on my bike, I get annoyed with people who walk in the middle of narrow city streets, or step off the pavement without looking.
I have been known to make an acid comment, like "Oh, should I be cycling on the pavement?"

Nanny27 Mon 10-Aug-26 13:58:12

Advertising companies that th8nk we want to watch endless, far too graphic adverts for sanitary products and, even worse incontinence pads.
That woman, "I'm letting it all go" makes me want to scream.

People crunching crisps on public transport, with accompanying annoying wrapper rustling. Even worse if the crisps are the flavoured kind and you get revolting fumes wafting around. In fact, any form of smelly/noisy eating on public transport should be banned!

Casdon Mon 10-Aug-26 14:05:32

One really small thing that bugs me is that when my children go downstairs first in the morning, both of them will switch the lights on rather than draw the curtains. I’ve told them numerous times, but they still do it. Just why?

Foxyferret Mon 10-Aug-26 14:05:37

Drivers that do not indicate, bad manners and adverts on TV that have to scream at you. Thank heavens for the mute button. Yes, that awful advert Nanny27, what were they thinking?

Labradora Mon 10-Aug-26 14:11:41

NotSpaghetti

... women, sadly always women, who swim slowly in tandem, chatting and taking up half the swimming pool - or those who gather in a bug huddle in the middle of the pool.

Oh My God.
I had a "slowly in tandem" pair in a pool I used to use regularly for exercise. They chatted the whole time during every length they swam.
Ladies...... do your swim.... Get a coffee and chat afterwards......Please...........😒😒

bridie54 Mon 10-Aug-26 14:16:13

Drivers who don't indicate at all, or indicate at the very last minute while you're sitting at a junction waiting to see where they are going. Then they stop or turn another way before they reach you!

bridie54 Mon 10-Aug-26 14:17:38

Foxyferret, I just read your post. snap!

MissAdventure Mon 10-Aug-26 14:25:45

People who are glued to their phones.
Meal out- out comes the phone, so they can keep checking it every two minutes.
.especially when you have to sit quietly through their boring conversations with other people, where they say precisely nothing.
