Things that (sometimes unreasonably) get on your nerves...hopefully lighthearted

I was watching the gardening programme on BBC2 this morning and suddenly got immensely irritated by the presenter, in the blazing sunshine, going on with himself along the lines of "...I'm already thinking about Autumn/Winter".

I know gardens take a lot of advance planning but it seems on every gardening programme no one seems to take the time out to just enjoy the moment, always looking ahead to the next job, the next bout of hard labour.

What gets your goat?

What the heck is a ‘picky tea’? Is it short for picnic?

Never heard of it.
🙄

It’s part of a Waitrose summer advertising campaign.

It was said in my family for years, and not in a twee way.
For me it meant I've sod all in, so I'll empty the fridge and raid the cupoards, and you can pick out what you want to eat.

Re that sickly smug couple on the holiday insurance ad. I could scream at the woman! I get my own back by drawing a moustache, granny glasses and blackened teeth on her when I see the advert in my Oldie magazine. Yes I am that childish. He's not too bad, but she makes me feel murderous. Hope I can say that without the PC POLICE arresting megrin

Please put the words SHAMPOO AND CONDITIONER in large print so I can make out which is which in the shower without my glasses!!

When getting prescriptions , some have 28 days and others 31 days or whatever, so that your sensible collection once a month ends up having to be sorted out at several different times.

Yes, Specki4eyes!!! The silly simpering woman gets right up my nose too!!! There’s a series of adverts, each of them equally nauseating!!

madeleine45 Tue 11-Aug-26 19:25:27

In fact I wonder if sometimes the "opposition" pay secret cash to the makers of the really annoying adverts, as there are one or two that I really take notice off, to especially NOT buy the products!1

This Labour Government.

Witzend Tue 11-Aug-26 19:47:57

TheWeirdoAgain60,

Was that book self-published? I can’t think any ‘proper’ publisher would have sanctioned it!

Witzend Tue 11-Aug-26 19:51:50

Brits saying or writing ‘math’, and ‘ass’ when they mean arse, and not a donkey.

Anyone saying REEsearch, instead of reSEARCH. Yes, I know it’s everywhere now! 🤬

People who respond to sales on FB Marketplace, arrange pick-up/meeting and don't turn up! People who pronounce "asked' 'axed'. Packets/jars that are impossible tp open without help and, when my children were small, I had a friend, who had a child the same age as mine, (who was a very badly behaved house wrecker), and her mother use to say "I don't let her do this when she 's at home so it's nice to see her expressing herself so freely".

I have two pet peeves and they both happen at work. I work part time in a newsagents.

First, when people come up to the counter while chatting on their phone. Stop yakking for the 30 seconds it takes to do your transaction.

Second, there is a BIG sign taped flat on the counter, where they have just put their packet of chewing gum, stating that the minimum card payment is £2. Then acting surprised when I tell them 'sorry, the minimum card transaction is £2'. 9 times out of 10 they say, 'no one carries cash any more'. Sometimes I ask what they would do if the system went down? Their answer, 'I'll draw some cash out'. My reply 'You won't be able to because the system isn't working'. The look of stunned disbelief always amazes me. It's not just the younger generation either, many older people do the same.

The TV adverts, guess why, ?

SpinDriftCoastal Wed 12-Aug-26 08:36:31

Self entitled people, people who think they are 'it' and most important, the endless women with long blond hair on telly and in adverts, people who never stop talking and think they are amazing, the extremes of beauty make up, surgery, and posturing, and lip pouting on social media profiles, air heads. I've just got to a stage where I think: 'Yeh, right!' It's boring!!!

1. HRH Princess Catherine, Princess of Wales, Duchess of Cornwall, future Queen, being referred to as Kate Middleton

2. Sloppy journalism and proof reading. I read with children in schools and find myself referring books back to the librarian because of misspellings and bad language. But newspapers are far worse.

Wheniwasyourage Wed 12-Aug-26 12:46:19

Lip fillers which make beautiful young women look totally ridiculous.

Wheniwasyourage Wed 12-Aug-26 12:51:07

When the Prince of Wales visits Scotland, Scottish papers put in their reports, "the Duke of Rothesay, as he is known in Scotland". While this may be strictly accurate in the strange world of royal nomenclature, in the 75 years I have lived in Scotland, I have never heard either Prince of Wales being called the Duke of Rothesay!

Ditherers, from people queuing at a cheese counter to authorities or committees putting decisions out for consultation. The latter can last many months and are usually followed by a myriad of meetings, quite often missing the boat - get on with it, make a decision.

People who, well into the 21st century still can't or won't learn to use a computer and expect others to do it for them.

That incredibly annoying woman’s voice on the Viking Cruises radio ad. I often zap the radio off once her dreaded first syllables are heard.

madeleine45 Fri 14-Aug-26 13:45:49

Irritating adverts for funerals where they imply that you are making it easy for your families , when if you ignore the sickly way they speak, they mean that you are taken away with no ceremony and you will be cremated at any gap they have in their schedule, and you will just have to hope that the ashes delivered to your family are you, if that matters!! Given the latest news of the funeral director who was a total fraud, I will stick to making up my own mind, and my family know exactly what I have chosen . Oh and each to their own, but as Maggie Smith said so well in Downton Abbey, my husband DIED , which is precisely what I would say, as for me, you pass people on the road, or pass the salad at lunch!!

hollysteers -
you also have the constant unsolicited advice?
I don't ask people about their private business .
They can do what they like!
Most of my neighbours have massive extensions and are worth double the estimated value of mine. I think that this house is one of the very few which has not be altered.
The house has two bedrooms and a horrible galley kitchen -it's actually pokey .
I've had people telling me that I have three bedrooms ..
Er I think that I can count them !
As for the kitchen -cooking is not enjoyable in such a cramped space .
My dream is to have an extension enabling me to do my art work .
Up to me -not them!

Witzend Fri 14-Aug-26 17:05:23

The woman who does the Viking Cruise radio ads. Her voice irritates the bejasus out of me!
